From its conception in 1857 to its first performances in 1882, Parsifal represented the culmination of the themes that preoccupied Wagner during the latter part of his life. This guide includes a series of articles on Wagner’s profound and complex opera, which the composer preferred to call a Bühnenweihfestspiel – a ‘Stage Consecration Festival Play’. Dieter Borchmeyer discusses the mythological foundations of Parsifal and its relation to Wagner’s earlier works. Barry Emslie’s thought-provoking piece explores the ‘virtues of sin’ in Wagner’s last opera. Robin Holloway provides a study of Parsifal’s musical motifs, followed by Carolyn Abbate’s article, which examines the relation between music and drama in the opera. Gerd Rienäcker contributes an essay on the dramaturgy, and analyses some of the major scenes. Finally, Mike Ashman writes about Parsifal on the stage. The present edition contains a literal translation of the libretto opposite the original German text, a number of photographs covering a wide chronology to the present day, a comprehensive thematic guide, a bibliography and discography, as well as DVD and website guides. Rigoletto - Giuseppe Verdi - Bog - Alma Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Rigoletto - Giuseppe Verdi - Bog - Alma Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Rigoletto was first produced at the Teatro La Fenice, Venice, in 1851, and is generally seen as marking the beginning of Giuseppe Verdi’s extraordinary middle period. It was followed in quick succession by Il trovatore and La traviata, and even after the great success of these two works Verdi regarded it as his ‘best opera’ up to that time. Based on Victor Hugo’s play Le Roi s’amuse, which was banned after its premiere in Paris in 1832, the opera faced considerable difficulties with local censors before performance was permitted. In the story of the hunchbacked court jester and his beloved daughter, Verdi believed he had found “the greatest subject and perhaps the greatest drama of modern times”.The guide contains articles on the place of Rigoletto in Verdi’s oeuvre and the background to its composition, a detailed examination of its musical structure and a survey of its performance history including discussions of some of its most distinguished interpreters. A further article highlights aspects of the opera’s particularly Italian character. The guide also includes the full Italian libretto with English translation, sixteen pages of illustrations, a musical thematic guide, a bibliography and discography, and DVD and website guides.Contains:The Making of Rigoletto, Jonathan KeatesThe Music of Rigoletto, Roger ParkerA Selective Performance History, George HallRigoletto: Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave after Victor Hugo’s play Le Roi s’amuseRigoletto: English Translation by William Weaver

Der fliegende Holländer is the first of Wagner’s operas considered to be representative of his mature style. It embodies one of the major themes that recur throughout his work, that of a central character seeking redemption from a loving woman. Originally taken from a story by the poet Heinrich Heine, Wagner extended and enriched his musical and dramaturgical language to produce an opera of extraordinary power. In this guide, John Warrack places the opera in the context of emerging German Romanticism, John Deathridge highlights and explores the musical riches of the score and William Vaughan reviews the importance of myth to Wagner and his contemporaries. Mike Ashman explains the particular way in which Wagner turned the Dutchman legend to his own purposes and Katherine Syer outlines certain themes of the opera in relation to its performance history. Wagner’s own programme note about the overture and his instructions to performers are also included. The present guide contains the full German libretto and English translation by Lionel Salter, thirty-one black and white and colour illustrations, a musical thematic guide, a discography, a bibliography, and DVD and website guides.
