Like the other arrangements in the CoolSide of Yuletide series, this arrangement incorporates elements of Jazz, Gospel, R&B, funk, and altered harmonies.

Mu Váibmu Vádjol Doppe

The hymn Mitt hjerte alltid vanker (My heart always lingers) is one of the most popular Scandinavian hymns. In this arrangement, elements from the yoik tradition have been included, as well as a Northern Sami translation of thefirst verse, and the last verse in Norwegian language. The original lyrics were written in Danish by Hans Adolph Brorson in 1732.The yoik elements include the use of so-called yoik syllables (syllables with nomeaning; pronunciation guide is included) as well as a yoik inspired melody in the opening bars. The yoik melody is then reused in several places. The piano part could be performed as written or more freely, using the chordsymbolsgiven as a guide. It is also possible to perform this arrangement a cappella.

K'Ayal Ta'arog : Psalm 42

Written for the Nashir Choral Festival in the Bronx, New York, Nick Page uses many elements from his arrangement of “Niska Banja”: the key of F, the piano ostinato, the pedal tones in the chorus, and the driving pulse with the tenor and the alto drones. This arrangement of Psalm 42 is strong and forward moving with a vocal, percussive feeling.

Pater Noster

Pater Noster was originally part of Fjellheim’s album Aejlies Gaaltije - The Sacred Source, released in 2004. This SSAA choral version was created for the choir Cantus for their album Northern Lights (2017). The idea behindAejlies Gaaltije - The Sacred Source was to combine parts of the traditional Latin Mass with elements of the Sami yoik tradition, other Norwegian folk music and the finnish music tradition.

Crossing Parallels

Following the success of Kathryn Salfelder's Cathedrals (2009), the American Bandmasters Association commissioned her to create this new work for band. Premiered at the 2010 ABA National Convention, Crossing Parallels offers a creative tapestry of engaging sounds and textures as it combines elements of Renaissance and Baroque musical gestures with contemporary notions of set theory and harmony. The seemingly contradictory nature of the title is reflected in the overlapping and intertwining of thematic ideas vying for attention.

Sacred

Sacred was originally part of a Mass setting in which the composer combined the traditional Latin Mass movements with elements from the Sámi yoik tradition, other Norwegian folk music and traditional Finnish music.This version for upper voices was recorded by Cantus on their album Northern Lights and is very approachable for choirs of all abilities. There are no words, only ‘yoik syllables’ with no meaning, for which apronunciation guide is included. Fjellheim’s distinctive and approachable musical language, which many will recognise from the use of his music at the opening of Disney’s Frozen, will appeal to both singersandaudience.

Book Of Visions

The 35-minute orchestral suite, Book of Visions, was co-commissioned by the Orchestre National de Belgique, NHK Symphony Orchestra and Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and received its premiere in Brussels on 15 April2005, conducted by Mikko Franck.The work consists of four orchestral tales of night, fire, love and fate. Each aims to extract the essence of the phenomenon, not in a descriptive way but rather as perceived by thecomposer metaphysically, an approach akin to that of his series of ‘Angel’ works. Although no exact narrative is intended, the final tale inevitably suggests autobiographical elements, as its composition was violentlyinterruptedby a near-fatal heart attack in January 2004.

Sonnet 116 : Let me not to the marriage of true minds

William Shakespeare’s famous sonnet (‘Let me not to the marriage of true minds Admit impediments’), often used at weddings and civil ceremonies, is here set to beautiful, fresh music by young composer Ed Rex. The mostlyhomophonic setting employs the composer’s distinctive close harmonies, which, together with short phrases and natural rhythm, serve to add greater meaning to the poignant and moving text. Spells of parallel and contrary motion inthe inner parts are intended in some way to reflect important elements of the commitment two people make to each other in marriage or partnership. Sonnet 116 is sure to add an unforgettable moment to a happy couple’s specialday,and would also be an excellent addition to concerts using a theme of love.

Njoktje

‘Njoktje’ is the South Sámi word for a swan and this music is based on an old yoik (a traditional Sámi form of song) which creates and ‘audio image’ of this beautiful bird, rather thansimply describing it. In this piece, which was recorded by Cantus on their album Northern Lights, elements from the original yoik have been used together with the composer’s own experience of the bird, as well as his ownmusical language.   An independent, four-part yoik ostinato in the alto 2 part underpins much of this work, and that, combined with the flowing melodies and close harmonies, creates a unique and veryattractivesoundscape.   Fjellheim’s distinctive and approachable musical language, which many will recognise from the use of his music at the opening of Disney’s Frozen, will appeal to both singersand audience.

The Russian School of Piano Playing Vol. 2 : Second Repertoire Album

This collection of piano repertoire pieces are designed to be used in conjunction with The Russian School of Piano Playing, Vol. 2, but are of course entirely suitable for pupils who have not previously used this method.The selection of pieces includes classical and modern western music, as well as Russian compositions drawn from the standard Soviet repertoire for children.The aim of this album is to provide teachers with material which will inspire pupils towards a higher standard of performance. Kyrie

Kyrie, in the original version, was part of Fjellheim’s album called Biejjien vuelie - Solkvad. “Biejjien vuelie” menas “Yoik of the sun” in South Sámi language. 'Solkvad' (or 'Sólarjólb' in the original Norse language), is apoem included in the old Norse poem collection Den eldre Edda. The music on the album was inspired by both the Norse poems and the Sámi yoik tradition.The Sámi culture is mentioned on several places in the old Sagas, andindicates that the society in the Nordic countries around year 1000 was indeed multi-cultural. The poems selected from the Norse literature had a certain sacred atmosphere; that is why they were combined with elements fromtheLatin Mass for the album.One fine example for this combination is Kyrie. The words “Kyrie eleison” are used both in Latin and South Sámi language, with the Sámi version having another rhythm and differently stressedsyllables.

Requiem (KA)

In recent years Karl Jenkins has become one of the world's best-selling living composers. He continues to conduct his epic Adiemus Live Concerts with distinguished orchestras including the London Philharmonic, featuring in Festivals and concerts in Britain and abroad; and his moving choral work The Armed Man: A Mass For Peace is now firmly lodged as a concert favourite. This new work builds on the style which the British public have come to know and adore. Jenkins has set the usual Latin movements of the requiem mass, but, in keeping with his usual trait of drawing from other cultures, he has also set five Japanese haiku ‘death’ poems. Such poems are usually to do withnature, have a single idea, and consist of seventeen syllables divided 5-7-5 over three lines. As one can see from the text, the Japanese view nature’s water cycle (precipitation) as being synonymous with life. The Western and Eastern texts are combined in two of the haiku movements, Having Seen The Moon and Farewell, which incorporate the Benedictus and the Agnus Dei respectively. Both are intoned by male voices in a monastic style as a counterpoint to the Japanese text sung by females. The instrumentation of these haiku settings includes the ancient Japanese wind instrument, the shakuhachi. Elsewhere, as usual, Jenkins has used some ethnic drums (e.g. Arabic darabuca, Japanese daiko, frame drums) and even a hip-hop rhythm in the Dies Irae!
