Playing Politics with Terrorism - - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Playing Politics with Terrorism - - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

While governments are obliged to protect society and bring terrorists to justice, their effectiveness in tackling terrorism without undermining the support of the population for law and order or jeopardising basic liberties is paramount. In dealing with extremism, governments have found it difficult to balance the imperatives of security and the rights of liberty. That said, neither lethargy nor hysteria is conducive to ensuring national security. Rather, steely determination grounded in facts and sound judgments about the challenges confronting us are required. The exaggeration by governments of a terrorist threat in order to sustain a credible anti-terrorism narrative, to manipulate public opinion, to push through draconian legislation or even to win elections are not novelties of the post-9/11 world, but as the contributors to this book point out, governments in many countries, from Putin''s Russia and Fujimori''s Peru to Italy in the 1970s, have stumbled towards repressing the very liberty and democratic culture which the terrorists seek to destroy. It includes contributors such as: Paul Wilkinson (St Andrews), Leonard Weinberg (Nevada), John Mueller (Ohio), Richard Drake (Montana), Martin Miller (Duke), Jonathan Stevenson (Naval War College), Jo-Marie Burt (George Mason), Javier Jordan (Granada), Robert Saunders (New York), William Eubank (Nevada), Richard Jackson (Manchester), Chris Michaelsen (OSCE), and Nicola Horsburg (King''s College).

Contextualising Jihadi Thought - - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Contextualising Jihadi Thought - - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Global jihadism has been on policy agendas for more than two decades. Since the 9/11 attacks, both transnational jihadi entities such as Al-Qaeda and national or regional militant groups have attracted a great deal of media and scholarly attention. In recent years, policy agendas have increasingly come to include a focus on countering militant jihadi ideologies. Despite this, studies of global jihadism that take the impact of ideas seriously are at a relatively early stage and have yet to fully capture the richness of their social contexts and intellectual universes. Departing from the security studies approaches that have characterised much writing about jihadi groups, this volume aims to engage policy-makers and specialists alike by bridging existing disciplines and areas of study to create a framework for beginning to understand jihadi movements through the study of their ideologies, intellectual histories, political engagements and geographies. The contributors to the volume come from a range of academic disciplines (including history, anthropology, political science, religious studies and area studies), as well as from the worlds of diplomacy and policy research. In addition to studies of globalised contexts and ideologies, the volume also includes detailed studies of jihadi currents of thought and responses to them in Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, India, Pakistan, Egypt, South-East Asia and Europe.

The Audacious Ascetic - Flagg Miller - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Audacious Ascetic - Flagg Miller - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In late 2002, over 1500 audiotapes were discovered in Kandahar, Afghanistan, in a house once occupied by Osama bin Laden. The Audacious Ascetic is the first book to explore this extraordinary archive. It details how Islamic cultural, legal, theological and linguistic vocabularies shaped militants'' understandings of al-Qa''ida, and, more controversially, challenges the notion that the group''s original adversary was America and the ''far enemy''. Miller argues that Western security agencies'' ''management'' of Bin Laden''s growing reputation went awry. When magnified through global media coverage, narratives of al-Qa''ida''s coherence were exploited by Osama and his militant supporters for their own ends. Focusing on over a dozen previously unpublished speeches by Bin Laden as well as on discussions by top al-Qa''ida leaders and Arab- Afghans, Miller chronicles the Saudi radical''s evolving relationship with a host of Muslim insurgencies that found his stripe of asceticism (zuhd) tactically useful, especially when circulated via audiotape. These recordings also reveal militants'' disenchantment when Bin Laden, marginalised through the ''90s, began pandering to Western television networks in his attempt to direct hetero- dox Islamist armed struggles against America. Such audio evidence exposes al-Qa''ida''s lack of coordination before 9-11 and invites scrutiny of dominant narratives of Western law enforcement, intelligence and terrorism analysts.

The Hungarians - Paul Lendvai - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Hungarians - Paul Lendvai - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This is a comprehensive history of a legendarily proud and passionate but lonely people. Much of Europe once knew them as 'child-devouring cannibals' and 'bloodthirsty Huns', but it was not long before the Hungarians became steadfast defenders of Christendom and fought heroic freedom struggles against the Tartars, the Turks and, among others, the Russians. Paul Lendvai tells how, despite a string of catastrophes and their linguistic and cultural isolation, the Hungarians have survived as a nation-state for more than 1,000 years. He traces Hungarian politics, culture, economics and emotions, from the Magyars' dramatic entry into the Carpathian Basin in 896 to the brink of the post-Cold War era. Lendvai brings to life the short-lived revolutionary triumphs of 1848-9 and 1918-19; the traumatic Treaty of Trianon (1920) which deprived Hungary of Transylvania and other historic Magyar lands; and the successive Nazi and Communist tyrannies. These are among the episodes that have formed the consciousness of the Hungarian people. Through anecdotes of heroes and traitors, victors and victims, geniuses and impostors, Lendvai conveys the multifaceted interplay of progressivism and economic modernisation, versus intolerance and narrow-minded nationalism, on the grand stage of Hungarian history. This work is a blend of narrative, irony and humour; of occasional anger without taboos or prejudices. It also offers an authoritative key to understanding how and why this corner of Europe has produced such a galaxy of great scientists, artists and entrepreneurs.

The Violent Image - Neville Bolt - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Violent Image - Neville Bolt - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Fast-moving, self- propelled ''violent images'' have radically changed the nature of insurgency in the modern world. The global media has revolutionised the way ideas, messages and images are disseminated, and the speed with which they travel. First satellite TV, then laptops and the Internet, and now mobile phones and social media have transformed the way we communicate, collapsing time and distance. Rebels who hope to overthrow states or to build transnational, ideological communities, have adopted these dynamic technologies. But they have also learned the key lesson: in a visual world, the power of the image has supplanted that of the written word. Neville Bolt investigates how today''s revolutionaries have rejuvenated the nineteenth century ''propaganda of the deed'' so that terrorism no longer simply goads states into overreacting, thereby losing legitimacy. The deed has become a tool to highlight the underlying grievances of communities. Pictures of 9/11, 7/1 and Abu Ghraib are today''s weapon of choice. The Violent Image explores what happens in the ''moment of shock''; how emotive pictures attach to messages, causing populations to rise up in anger. From the Fenians to the Taliban to the Arab Spring we learn how insurgents have adapted the way they use violence to tell stories and effect social change. In the ''war of ideas'', the new revolutionaries aim to set in motion surges of support that spread virally through global networks at such speed that states can no longer defend their own strategic narratives. Have we now reached the point where insurgents and populations are driving images and ideas so fast, that a new era of revolutionary politics is already upon us?

Jerusalem - Menachem Klein - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Jerusalem - Menachem Klein - Bog - C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Although Israelis and Palestinians are adamant that they will not negotiate or indeed compromise over the status of Jerusalem, agreements have been made and understandings reached between the two protagonists, as well as between other Arab states. This book sheds light on the political history of Jerusalem in Arab-Israeli relations over the last 25 years. The author adopts a multidisciplinary approach -involving history, political science, geography, city planing, sociology and international relations - in order to integrate the political status of the city on the negotiating table with its complex urban reality, thereby dispelling many of the myths that shape political discourse about the city. Too often, he argues, Jerusalem''s complex political geography has been overlooked in the rush to maximise short-term political gains. The first chapter presents the geographical and urban reality and its historical background: the second describes how Jerusalem was treated during the peace negotiations between Israel and Egypt in 1977-9; the third analyses the Israeli-Palestinian negotiations from the early 1980s to the Declaration of Principles signed by Israel and the PLO in September 1993; the fourth discusses the status of the Arab League and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, as well as the status of Jordan in the negotiations concerning Jerusalem and the city''s Islamic holy sites; the fifth analyses the Palestinians'' position regarding Jerusalem and relations between their local representatives and the Palestinian Authority''s national institutions; the sixth examines whether the uniqueness of East Jerusalem also finds expression in its politics. To this end, it analyses the political profile of East Jerusalem''s inhabitants and of their representatives in the Legislative Council of the Palestinian Authority. The seventh chapter addresses Israeli policy and actions, under the Labour and Likud administrations. The conclusion discusses the permanent status negotiations, including the unofficial underst
