Written as a commission for the Palmetto Consortium of South Carolina, this expansive work explores the delight, wonderment and excitement of a young boy's hopes and dreams. Several stylistic elements combine to depict variousemotions and imaginings. Drums of the Saamis : The merger of the first Nation and modern Albertan cultures

Drums of the Saamis chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures. The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are thefoundation for the entire piece. Both elements are developed, varied and enhanced throughout as the listener senses the increasing influence of modern day Alberta, Canada, through the use of modern sounding chords and rhythms. By the end, themarriage of the old and the new is complete.

American Barndance

Rhythmic and energetic, this lively work contains elements of an early American character but also features a poignant, calmer section with a lighter texture and interlaced lyric motifs. The piece builds to a dramatic peak with apowerful and majestic statement by the full ensemble. The final segment, however, becomes more and more frenzied with mixed meters and relentless percussion figures as it races to an exciting conclusion. La Procession Du Rocio

Composer Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a native of Spain, but was influenced early in his career by the impressionistic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel while studying in Paris. Upon returning to Spain he drew inspiration fromSpanish folk music with La Procession du Rocio becoming one of his best-known works. The music portrays a festival and procession that takes place in the Triana neighborhood of Seville, and is filled with wonderfulidiomatic Spanish musical elements. Alfred Reed's marvelous transcription created in 1962 remains an enduring staple in the repertoire for wind bands. Hail the Champions

Commissioned for the University of Akron Symphonic Band, this dynamic work celebrates 100 years of music composed for the Olympic Games. Based on three primary themes, the first is a brilliant fanfare that serves as an introduction as well as a unifying link throughout. Second is the 1896 Olympic Hymn (music by Spyros Samaras) set in a beautiful lyric style which builds to a magnificent climax juxtaposed with the opening fanfare. The final section presents a new version of Mr. Curnow's own Olympic Fanfare and Theme for the Olympic Flag which was commissioned for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and performed again in 2000.
