A Roman War Song is a chorus from the opera Rienzi by Richard Wagner . It has been arranged here for TTBB Male Voice Chorus with Piano accompaniment by Percy E. Fletcher , with the lyrics translated into English by George Ellerton . Rienzi was one of the composer’s earlier operas, but remains one of his most popular. Structured in five acts, it was written from 1838-1840 and first performed in 1842. The plot revolves around the life of revolutionary Cola di Rienzi , who helps to overthrow the established nobility in Rome, before the populace also turns against him. Richard Wagner (1813-1883) was a German composer best known for his operas, most famously his Ring cycle. His complex textures and shifting tonality is sometimes seen as marking the birth of modern music.

Holst, G Two Welsh Folk Songs Sab/Piano

Holst's collection of Twelve Welsh Folk Songs was published in 1931, with the lyrics translated into English by Steuart Wilson . Two of these are presented here, scored for SAB three-part chorus with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) was an English composer and teacher. Having studied under Stanford and Parry, he became a close friend of Vaughan Williams – they would often critique each other’s work – and influenced composers such as Tippet and Britten. He is best remembered for his Planets suite.

Brahms: Ave Maria Op.12

Among the many works for which Brahms is celebrated, his Choral oeuvre is significant. This first Choral work, Ave Maria, originally written for SSAA and Organ, is not mere juvenilia. The flowing 6/8 piece is structured like a short sonata movement, with the two pairs of Voices trading contrapuntal entrances until the parts join their Voices in the pleading ‘Ora pro nobis’, all with Brahmsian harmonies in the accompaniment.Brahms later arranged the work for SSAA and Orchestra followed by this setting for Chorus and Piano.

Warlock, P Corpus Christi Satb/Piano+sop/Ten Solos

Corpus Christi is an anonymous Middle English Carol, first written down c.1500. It was re-worked as a carol for Soprano and Tenor Soloists with SATB chorus by Peter Walock (1894-1930) in 1919. It was dedicated to Thomas Strong , later Bishop of Oxford, who had been Dean of Christ Church College during Warlock's brief time studying there, and who is better known for encouraging William Walton's musical career.  While he is best remembered for his scandalous lifestyle and his large-scale Capriol Suite , the Corpus Christi carol ranks alongside Bethlehem Down as one of Warlock's most sensitive and beautiful creations.

Vaughan Williams, R Mannin Veen Satb/Piano

Mannin Veen (Dear Mona) is a traditional Manx melody, arranged for SATB chorus by Vaughan Williams . It includes a Piano reduction for rehearsal purposes. Lyrics are provided in both English and Manx. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was an English composer, editor, and collector of folk music. He studied at the RCM under Stanford and Parry, and formed a lifelong friendship with Holst, with whom he would exchange critical views on each other’s work. He is best remembered for his orchestral works like the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and the Folk Song Suite , but he also wrote many hymn tunes and carols.

Adolphe Adam: Comrades In Arms

Comrades In Arms has been a staple of the Male Voice Choir repertoire for almost 150 years. The lyrics are from an earlier poem by George Linley (1798-1865), set to music by the French composer Adolphe Adam (1803-1856), who is perhaps better known for his operas and ballets. Adam provides all the musical contrast you would expect from an operatic composer: from the quiet, tranquil, opening refrain of On the breeze a sound is sounding , through a vigorous Allegro section, before finishing with a march-style call-and-response Be true and brave, and win the fight , he keeps the listener entertained throughout. This exciting chorus is sure to impress any audience. It has been scored for TTBB, and includes a Piano reduction.

Terry, R Sailor Shanties Ttbb

Sir Richard Runciman Terry (1865-1938) was a British organist, musicologist and editor, often known as simply R. R. Terry . He was the first Director of Music at Westminster Cathedral, where he also lead a great revival in English Renaissance music, especially the Latin works of composers like Tallis, Byrd and Morley. While Terry is best remembered for his contribution to Tudor Church music, he also did much to preserve the shanty tunes that died out as the age of the sailing ship came to an end. His two volumes of The Shanty Book have been considered the prime musicological work on the subject for generations. In Sailor Shanties , these tunes have been arranged for TTBB chorus with solo Voice and Piano accompaniment.
