What we eat, the quality of our food, and even the tastes that we develop are dictated by powerful corporations who are driven by the profit motive. This book investigates the corporate dominance of the world’s seed supply. The seed is nature’s gift and the first link in the food chain. This life form is becoming the exclusive intellectual property of the corporation. The advent of genetically modified seeds and strict patent protection accorded to them enable companies to own the seed even after the farmer has bought, planted, and harvested the seed. Multinational corporations have a monopoly control over seeds and the accompanying pesticides which is leading to monocultures in the food system and the disappearance of traditional methods of farming. Local producers are forced to buy seeds each year, thereby fostering a feudalistic relationship of perpetual dependence. An imbalance of power has emerged and farmers are transformed from producers to consumers by these new arrangements. The leap to embrace biotechnology and genetically modified foods has been quite swift and conducted without the public’s knowledge. The food that our stomachs ingest may be increasingly bad for us. Teaching is the most popular career choice of Mexican women who pursue advanced education, and the majority of teachers in Mexico are women. Mexican maestras (women teachers) became a ubiquitous presence in the countryside following the Mexican Revolution and continue to make valuable contributions to their students. In the mountainous and largely rural state of Oaxaca, courageous maestras may spend years living away from their homes and families while teaching in isolated communities. These dedicated and courageous maestras pursued teaching so that they could defenderme, or take care of themselves and their loved ones. Through analysis of a dozen maestras'' narratives, this ethnographic study explores ways that acquisition of schooling and employment has empowered maestras to make informed decisions about marriage, supporting themselves, helping their parents and siblings as needed, and provide education and opportunities to their own children. These maestras have served as role models for their students, relatives and neighbours. Moreover, by “planting seeds” through their labor, have played contributed to cultural changes, including the expansion of women’s roles in a patriarchal society.

The purpose of The Mythologies of Capitalism and the End of the Soviet Project is to show that in order to understand popular disillusionment with democratization, liberalization, and other transformations associated with the attempts of non-Western societies to appropriate the ideas of Western modernity, one must consider how these ideas are mythologized in the course of such appropriations. Olga Baysha argues that the seeds of popular post-revolutionary frustration should be sought in pre-revolutionary discourses on democracy, liberalism, and other concepts of Western modernity that are produced outside local contexts and introduced through the channels of global communication and the interpretations of politicians, activists, and experts. Analyzing the opinions of working people and intellectuals published in two Ukrainian newspapers of perestroika times, the author shows how the concepts of democracy, the market, and the West acquired schizophrenic mythical significations. The study is situated within the context of Ulrich Beck’s theory of world risk society and Gregory Bateson’s theory of schizophrenia as communicative disorder. The author argues that schizophrenic mythologies constructed through globalized networks can lead to disorientation, frustration, and the sense of uncertainty and insecurity on the part of mass publics.

Known as Gandhi of Han’guk, Ham (1901–1989) was at the epicenter of a series of tumultuous political events in Korea and played a pioneering role in progressive social activism, including the independence movement, promotion of nationalist education, protests against military regimes, and pietistic, religious liberalism. According to Lee, Ham developed his own syncretic, authentic philosophy of ssial and applied it to his understanding and assessment of theology, history, politics, and even international relations. His syncretism culminated at his anthropology of ssial and his expanded notion of community. Lee argues that Ham’s ssial philosophy, which reconstructed the citizen’s identity as an active agent for political progress, led him to defy the excessively parochial nationalism, romanticized patriotism, and indoctrinated religiosity with which he believed the whole society was infatuated during the mid-twentieth century--and ultimately to advocate for a cosmopolitan community.

European colonial empires were built on private wealth-seeking (gold, silver and oil). These extractive activities required massive public subsidies. Drawing on the experience of three Pacific Rim nations — Australia, Japan and Canada and two territories in the US (Hawaii and Alaska) — New State-Making in the Pacific Rim, 1850-1974: Gold, Silver, Oil, Greed and Government demonstrates how 19th century colonialism contained the seeds of its own destruction. Peter J. Aschenbrenner identifies three factors that marked the turning point in the history of colonialism. First, governments demanded a greater return to the public treasury from private extractive activities and a reduced footprint (measured in environmental devastation and obliteration of local cultures. Second, first residents acquired considerable skill in ‘adaptation for survival,’ that is, fighting back against oppression (manifested in programs of extermination, forced population movement and hostility to language, religion and traditional subsistence practices). Third, colonial nations’ participation in World War I required their armed forces to fill manpower needs by calling on minorities to perform military service. This gave minorities significant leverage in their struggle to achieve equal political rights and access to their fair share of government benefits. Rethinking colonial practices became a realistic option, once national survival was at risk.

Greek influence became apparent in art, religious ceremonial and liturgics, sacred music, the rhetoric of doctrinal debate, the growth of eastern monastic communities, and charitable institutions, and the proliferation of the cults of eastern saints and ecclesiastical feast days and, in particular, devotion to the Theotokos or Mother of God. From the late seventh to the middle of the eighth century, eleven of the thirteen Roman pontiffs were the sons of families of eastern provenance. While conceding that over the course of the seventh century Rome indeed experienced the impact of an important Greek element, some scholars of the period have insisted that the degree to which Rome and the Papacy were "orientalized" has been exaggerated, while others argue that the extent of their "byzantinization" has not been fully appreciated. The question has also been raised as to whether Rome''s oriental popes were responsible for sowing the seeds of separatism from Byzantium and laying the foundation for a future papal state, or whether they were loyal imperial subjects ever steadfast politically, although not always so in matters of the faith, to the reigning sovereign in Constantinople.
