Magnolia Daybreak is a beautiful deciduous pink magnolia with the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It flowers in May, somewhat later that other magnolia varieties and is noted for its upright fastigiated (columnar) habit. This stunning magnolia hybrid was bred in 1990 specifically as an upright columnar specimen. It has a small, slender habit that fits into gaps in the landscape.Magnolia Daybreak blooms in May, which is unusual, and despite its slender branches the flowers are large measuring 23-25cms across. Blooms are beautifully tulip-shaped with a deep fruity citrus scent. Magnolia Daybreak blooms in all tones of pink from pale baby pink to deep carmine for 2-3 weeks. The flowers appear before its wavy-edged pale green foliage that lasts throughout the summer. In autumn the leaves fall to reveal a good branching structure that points skyward giving a bare garden architectural form.Height and Spread of Magnolia DaybreakWith a maximum height and spread of 7 by 3.5 metres Magnolia Daybreak will fit into most narrow spaces. How Hardy is Magnolia DaybreakThe small ornamental tree is very hardy down to subzero temperatures and its flowers are less frost susceptible as it blooms in May.How To Use Magnolia DaybreakIf you have a space that needs a slender tree Daybreak Magnolia is a good bet. This is a superb specimen tree for the lawn, and it will do well in a large mixed border if it is not too crowded. You‘ll find bees and butterflies are attracted by its strong fruity fragrance.Because Magnolia Daybreak is slender and pollution tolerant it suits compact urban gardens and new build homes that need a boost. You can grow Magnolia in large well watered pots but they will tend to stay at a smaller size than free-planted specimens. How To Care For Magnolia DaybreakMagnolia Daybreak needs little care if it’s planted according to its needs. Like all magnolia it prefers a sunny spot but will tolerate partial shade as well. It’s important to avoid any frost pockets as frost damages the buds. The best soil for a magnolia is neutral to slightly acid and it will do well in most structures including clay. Once established it is fairly drought tolerant too. There is no need to prune this beauty but trimming out the broken or diseased stems can be done after flowering has finished. Occasional thinning of excess branches will produce new fresh growth the following year.If you want a spectacular flowering tree Magnolia Daybreak is one of the best. It’s low maintenance yet glorious scented flowers make it a winner in small urban and large country gardens alike.

Magnolia Denudata Yulan Lily Tree Yulan Magnolia Trees

Magnolia Denudata Yulan Lily Tree Yulan Magnolia Trees

Magnolia Denudata, more commonly known as Lily Tree or Yulan Magnolia, is one of the showiest flowering magnolia cultivars. With a profuse display of fragrant, white blossoms in spring, and striking pink fruits in autumn, this compact deciduous tree offers multiple seasons of interest. This variety is an excellent choice for a specimen tree.In April, masses of cup-shaped white flowers appear on the tree, before the foliage unfolds, beautifully contrasted by the dark glossy bark. Delicate and large, the upright flowers will slowly open their petals, resembling lilies: hence the name Lily tree. The creamy blossoms can sometimes be tinged with pale pink on the base of the petals, and are up to 8 cms long. The foliage appears as the flowers start to fade, ovate and medium green up until autumn when they turn to yellowish hues before dropping. In autumn, the previously brownish fruit turns to vibrant, deep pink, adorning the tree well into winter months.Height and Spread of Magnolia DenudataA small deciduous ornamental tree, Yulan Magnolia is usually below 9 metres in both height and width. How Hardy Is Magnolia DenudataA Chinese native, this cultivar is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. For its reliable performance and impressive qualities, Magnolia Denudata Yulan won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society. How To Use Magnolia DenudataHighly decorative and relatively compact, Lily Tree is ideally suited to be grown as a focus of interest, in small and large gardens alike. The breathtaking display of blossoms adds a touch of drama to the landscape early in the year, often upstaging other cultivars with its dazzling looks.Even though this beautiful tree is most often grown as a specimen tree, it can shine in mixed borders as well, especially when complemented by lush evergreen cultivars. How To Care For Magnolia DenudataEasy to grow and to care for, Yulan Magnolia will thrive in moist but well-drained neutral to acid soil that has consistent moisture throughout the year. When it comes to location in the garden, Magnolia Denudata Yulan fares well in both full sun and partial shade, as long as it is in a sheltered spot, safe from harsh winds. The Lily tree is best left to its own devices, and it should not be pruned.Attractive appearance and ease of maintenance make deciduous magnolias appealing to gardeners, but Yulan Magnolia is particularly prized as one of the more impressive varieties. Its marvelous features and compact size in maturity make it versatile and suitable for various uses in the garden, but Lily Tree is at its best when grown as a specimen tree. Magnolia Blue Opal Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal for Sale UK

Magnolia Blue Opal Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal for Sale UK

Magnolia Blue OpalThe Blue Opal Magnolia is an unusual deciduous tree that’s rarely found in UK gardens. It produces blue-hued buds and blue-yellow blooms in spring on a compact crown. Magnolia Blue Opal’s full botanical name is Magnolia Acuminata Blue Opal. Acuminata Magnolias originate from the eastern United States but they do very well in the UK.Opal is an unusual cultivar with striking blue-green buds that appear in spring. They are large and hard to miss standing approximately 4-5 cms tall on the ends of its branches. These unusual blue buds mature to dark yellow flowers with blue-green outer petals. They open into ten centimetre wide cup-shaped blooms in late spring. When pollinated these flowers ripen into cucumber shaped fruits which give the tree its common name the Cucumber Tree.As flowers begin to fall, large dark-green ovate leaves emerge for the summer and early autumn months. The foliage of Magnolia Blue Opal gives good autumn colour compared to other magnolias before it falls for winter.Height and Spread of Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia starts as a compact shrub that slowly matures into a tree. It’s maximum height of 15 metres and spread of 8 metres is only reached after several decades of growth. This makes it suitable for all sized gardens including compact urban spaces. How Hardy Is Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia is hardy throughout the UK as it can survive sub-zero temperatures, but it should be planted in a well-drained area that’s sheltered from frost and strong winds. Magnolias may not flower in exposed sites of the northern UK.How To Use Magnolia Blue OpalBlue Opal Magnolia is a specimen tree you’ll rarely spot here. It’s still relatively unknown and sure to grab plenty of attention in a sheltered front garden. Use Blue Opal as a focal point in large gardens and if you can only choose one tree for an urban space, this is an unusual option. How To Care For Magnolia Blue OpalMost magnolias prefer neutral to acid soil but the acuminata species is more tolerant of chalk. If your ground is alkaline this is the perfect magnolia. Dig in well-rotted manure or garden compost and top it up each year in early spring.Plant Blue Opal in a sunny spot that’s sheltered from cold drying winds and frost pockets as frost damages the furry buds. If a late frost is forecast cover Blue Opal with fleece to protect the new buds.Magnolia Blue Opal likes consistently moist but not waterlogged soil so give yours plenty of water in dry spells to ensure it develops new buds. Blue Opal doesn’t grow well in containers or enjoy being transplanted. Pruning isn’t necessary as Magnolia Blue Opal naturally holds a graceful shape as it grows, but you can remove crossed or damaged branches when the fruits have fallen and the tree is in full leaf.

Magnolia Grandiflora. Bull Bay Tree. Large Evergreen Trees UK

Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies. Yellow Magnolias Buy Online UK

Magnolia Butterflies is a cross between Magnolia Acuminata and Magnolia Denudata to create a true yellow flowering Magnolia. This beautiful specimen usually forms as a small tree. With striking, primrose yellow blossoms and a compact, pyramidal form, this ornamental tree is an excellent candidate for a specimen tree.Same as its close relatives from the Magnolia family, the Butterfly variety is grown for its gorgeous, fragranced blossoms. It has yellow, loosely star-shaped scented flowers that appear in March to April, well before the leaves emerge, giving a fabulous display. The upright, non-fading blossoms of Magnolia Butterflies have a pleasant, citrus scent, and look particularly elegant and graceful against bare branches. After the abundant flowering season ends, elliptic, dark green leaves unfold, providing interest through to autumn.Although Butterfly Magnolia appears delicate, this elegant deciduous tree is actually quite robust. It can survive temperatures as low as -20 degrees, and it’s fully hardy in Britain and Ireland. However, this cultivar appreciates a sheltered position, as late frosts or strong winds might damage the flower buds. Growing Tip: Magnolia Butterflies prefers a well drained acidic soil, can grow up to  4-5m tall and 4-5m wide. Adaptable to clay and sandy soils, as long as the soil is not overly wet. It will thrive in full sun or partial shade and is full hardy.Even though it can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub, Butterfly Magnolia is at its best when cultivated as an ornamental tree, with a single trunk and a pyramidal crown. To ensure that this ornamental tree is in great shape, prune regularly in mid-summer to early autumn, to avoid bleeding of the sap. To restrain the size of this cultivar, thin out the shoots every few years, and routinely remove watershoots and dead or damaged stems. As it’s virtually impossible to remain indifferent to Magnolia Butterflies in full bloom, this striking tree is often a choice for a statement or a focal plant. The canary yellow, goblet-shaped flowers that envelop the bare branches of this cultivar brighten up the garden, especially if planted in a partially shaded corner. Combine Butterfly Magnolia with other acid-loving plants, such as azaleas and rhododendrons. Or, for a particularly dramatic effect, pink flowering varieties of Magnolia such as Magnolia Soulangeana Satisfaction.

Magnolia Emperor Flowering Tree for Sale Online UK

Magnolia Emperor is a beautiful deciduous magnolia with large dark pink-purple springtime flowers that often bloom a second time in summer. It suits a sheltered border and will grow in a plant container too.Magnolias are native to South America and the Far East, but they are one of the oldest plants we know preserved in fossil records across the globe. Magnolias were introduced to Europe and named after French plant hunter Pierre Magnol in the early 1700s. They’ve been crossed to produce numerous new varieties since. Magnolia Emperor was hybridised in 2006 by the New Zealand breeder Vance Hooper who also bred Magnolia Cleopatra. Magnolia Emperor is a hybrid of the popular Magnolia Felix Jury and Magnolia Genie. It’s named Emperor for its large regal dark pink and purple flowers in spring. These profuse goblet-shaped flowers appear on bare branches and often measure 25-30 cms across.Emperor’s first show of flowers occurs in mid-spring which is followed by its attractive dark glossy green foliage. The second flower show often occurs in early summer which is unusual for a magnolia.Emperor Magnolia is a hardy, sun-loving statement tree that’s perfect for lovers of deep impactful colour.Height And Spread of Magnolia EmperorMagnolia Emperor reaches a fully grown height of 5 metres and the crown spreads to 3.5 metres over ten years. How Hardy is Magnolia EmperorIt is winter hardy down to minus temperatures if the roots are well-drained, but it needs full sun and shelter from harsh winds to flower well. How To Use Magnolia EmperorThis is a great choice of statement tree for your front or back garden. It doesn’t get too tall or wide and produces a glorious display of flowers twice a year. It suits modern urban gardens or pretty country cottage style borders where it brings height, structure, and colour.Magnolia Emperor will also grow in a large well-watered and fed container on a deck, patio or sheltered balcony. How To Care For Magnolia EmperorMagnolia Emperor needs a sheltered position in full sun and it’s important to avoid frost pockets or wind tunnels that will damage the early buds. Magnolia doesn’t like being transplanted so be sure to choose a sunny, sheltered position.Although Magnolia does best on slightly acidic soil it will cope with most types of soil. Bulk up a planting hole with plenty of ericaceous compost and apply a thick layer of bracken or pine-based compost in spring to boost its nutrients and flower show.Pruning isn’t needed because it grows in a pleasing open goblet shape, but if necessary you can prune back any dead or crossed branches in midsummer after the flowering has finished.Remember to give new trees plenty of water until they are established. If you’re growing Magnolia Emperor in a container, be sure to water and feed it once a week in the growing season.

Calycanthus Venus Carolina Allspice Sweetshrub Venus

Calycanthus Venus Carolina Allspice Sweetshrub Venus

Calycanthus Venus or Sweetshrub VenusCalycanthus Venus, also referred to as Sweetshrub Venus or Carolina Allspice, is a deciduous shrub that grows to a height of 2.5 to 4 meters and a width of 2.5 to 4 meters. The foliage is truly large and eye-catching. Each oblong leaf measures up to 15 centimetres in length. During the autumn, the leaves turn a brilliant hue of yellow. The foliage and flowers are somewhat deer and rabbit resistant. When the spring weather starts to warm up the atmosphere, Sweetshrub Venus develops a bevy of buds. The buds are plump and light green in colour. From late spring well into summer, Calycanthus Venus produces a virtually non-stop display of flowers. The flowers are reminiscent of the blooms found on a magnolia tree. Each large, cup-shaped flower is highly fragrant. Many people say that the blooms smell like a combination of watermelon and strawberry. The blooms are white with yellow and purple centres. The petals are strap like, large, and appear warlike. For best growth, plant Sweetshrub Venus in a location that offers full sun or partial shade. However, in areas with very hot summers it is preferable to plant the shrub in partial shade to prevent the leaves from developing a brown margin from too much sun exposure. Avoid planting the shrub in full shade or it tends to grow in a vine like fashion and bear very few, if any, flowers. In windy areas, pick a sheltered location to protect the shrub from cold or drying winds. Choose a planting site for the Calycanthus Venus that is well-draining with ample organic material. Unlike many shrubs, it will survive in clay. It grows well in acidic or neutral soil. During the first year, keep the soil moist but not overly saturated to encourage ample root growth. After the first year, Carolina Allspice is relatively drought tolerant but the foliage will dry out and turn brown around the margins if exposed to the parched soil for very long. Sweetshrub Venus can be pruned to maintain its overall size and shape. Old shoots may be cut to the ground to encourage new growth. Pruning the ends of new shoots promotes branching growth. It features a moderate growth rate. Carolina Allspice typically takes five to ten years to reach its full growth potential. Plant Sweetshrub Venus in an area of the landscape where its foliage and blooms can be appreciated. It makes an ideal specimen shrub or can be grouped to create a large display. Calycanthus Venus looks fantastic in a cottage garden or formal landscape.
