Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland Evergreen Compact Magnolia

Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is a compact evergreen magnolia renowned for its large showy, fragranced flowers. Evergreen and elegant, this striking cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen plant or mixed shrub borders. Like its deciduous cousins, Magnolia Grandiflora also produces massive showy flowers but tends to do this in summer rather than spring. The cultivar ‘Maryland’ differentiates itself by rounded, compact shrub (rather than tree) shape. With all the noteworthy qualities of its close relatives, this eye-catching cultivar has a few interesting differences. The lush foliage consists of glossy, broad, elliptic leaves, but unlike most bull bay Magnolias, Maryland doesn’t have a brown underside. Instead, the large, leathery leaves are light, olive green beneath, forming a rounded, compact shrub, rather than a tree. Although the foliage differentiates this cultivar from its evergreen cousins, the blossoms are as equally stunning as those of other Magnolia cultivars. In the summer, massive creamy white flowers grace this compact shrub. Large and goblet-shaped, the blossoms have a sweet, citrusy fragrance.Tolerant of full sun to partial shade, this flowering shrub thrives in moist but well-drained soil, rich in humus. When it comes to acidity, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. Apart from being highly decorative, this ornamental shrub is quite robust. Fully hardy in Britain and Ireland, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland can survive even when the temperatures drop to -20 degrees. However, to avoid potential damage from frost and biting winds, apply a layer of mulch during winter, and choose a sheltered location for planting.A cross between Magnolia Grandiflora and Magnolia Virginiana, the cultivar Maryland is quite fast growing, although it stays fairly compact even when fully mature. This evergreen shrub can grow to be 3 to 8 meters tall and 2 to 4 metres wide, which is, when compared to other Magnolia Grandiflora varieties, rather petite. With a rich, leathery foliage, elegant, compact form and clusters of aromatic blossoms, Magnolia Grandiflora Maryland is ideal as a focus or a specimen plant. Although this plant has a year-round interest, its graceful and sophisticated appearance is at its best in the summer, when this shrub is in full bloom. Consider planting this Magnolia variety in a mixed shrub border, either underplanted with low-growing flowering shrubs, or combined with medium-sized, evergreen bushes.See also our full range of Magnolia varieties we have available.

Its foliage is typically magnolia oval in shape and mid-green, but it turns a pretty shade of copper in the autumn. If you love magnolias this is a reliable choice that avoids blooming during the frosty season and creates a stunning profuse show of huge blooms each year.Height And Spread of Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty grows in tree form rather than a shrub and reaches 2.5 to 4 metres in height and spread over 10-20 years. How Hardy Is Magnolia BettyThis is a hardy magnolia that copes with below-zero winters if it’s grown in well-drained soil. It needs shelter from cold winds and copes with some drought once established. How To Use Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty is a stunning specimen tree that blooms early and brings plenty of colour to a bare garden. It suits flower borders and standalone spots, and can be grown in a large well-watered and fed container to brighten up a deck or balcony.Magnolias suit country cottage style gardens, but also modern urban spaces with their large structural blooms and because Betty is virtually no maintenance, it suits wildlife-friendly spaces and gardeners with little time on their hands. How To Care For Magnolia BettyMagnolia Betty needs little care if it’s planted in an advantageous spot. Choose moist but well-drained neutral to acidic soil in full sun for the best flowers. Near a sheltering fence or wall is a good spot because harsh, cold winds can damage flowers and foliage.Pruning isn’t necessary and can ruin the shape, so it’s best to hold off with the secateurs only removing dead or crossed branches in mid-summer after the flowers have fallen.Water Magnolia Betty well until established and apply a thick layer of acidic mulch such as bracken or pine mulch in very early spring to provide nutrients and trap moisture for the growing season.Lots more Magnolia varieties on the website.

Magnolia Denudata Yulan Lily Tree Yulan Magnolia Trees

Magnolia Denudata Yulan Lily Tree Yulan Magnolia Trees

Magnolia Denudata, more commonly known as Lily Tree or Yulan Magnolia, is one of the showiest flowering magnolia cultivars. With a profuse display of fragrant, white blossoms in spring, and striking pink fruits in autumn, this compact deciduous tree offers multiple seasons of interest. This variety is an excellent choice for a specimen tree.In April, masses of cup-shaped white flowers appear on the tree, before the foliage unfolds, beautifully contrasted by the dark glossy bark. Delicate and large, the upright flowers will slowly open their petals, resembling lilies: hence the name Lily tree. The creamy blossoms can sometimes be tinged with pale pink on the base of the petals, and are up to 8 cms long. The foliage appears as the flowers start to fade, ovate and medium green up until autumn when they turn to yellowish hues before dropping. In autumn, the previously brownish fruit turns to vibrant, deep pink, adorning the tree well into winter months.Height and Spread of Magnolia DenudataA small deciduous ornamental tree, Yulan Magnolia is usually below 9 metres in both height and width. How Hardy Is Magnolia DenudataA Chinese native, this cultivar is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. For its reliable performance and impressive qualities, Magnolia Denudata Yulan won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by Royal Horticultural Society. How To Use Magnolia DenudataHighly decorative and relatively compact, Lily Tree is ideally suited to be grown as a focus of interest, in small and large gardens alike. The breathtaking display of blossoms adds a touch of drama to the landscape early in the year, often upstaging other cultivars with its dazzling looks.Even though this beautiful tree is most often grown as a specimen tree, it can shine in mixed borders as well, especially when complemented by lush evergreen cultivars. How To Care For Magnolia DenudataEasy to grow and to care for, Yulan Magnolia will thrive in moist but well-drained neutral to acid soil that has consistent moisture throughout the year. When it comes to location in the garden, Magnolia Denudata Yulan fares well in both full sun and partial shade, as long as it is in a sheltered spot, safe from harsh winds. The Lily tree is best left to its own devices, and it should not be pruned.Attractive appearance and ease of maintenance make deciduous magnolias appealing to gardeners, but Yulan Magnolia is particularly prized as one of the more impressive varieties. Its marvelous features and compact size in maturity make it versatile and suitable for various uses in the garden, but Lily Tree is at its best when grown as a specimen tree. Magnolia Kobus Tree Northern Japanese Magnolia Tree

Magnolia Kobus Tree Northern Japanese Magnolia Tree

Magnolia Kobus or the Northern Japanese Magnolia is a beautiful, slender small magnolia tree that reaches a maximum height of just 10 metres. It fits into almost all gardens schemes and particularly likes chalky soils.Magnolia Kobus is a popular deciduous small Japanese tree. Its fragrant white flowers are one of the first colours to emerge in April, sometimes March, after a long dark winter. The flowers are large, pure white blooms measuring up to 10 cm wide. Each bloom is individually comprised of six distinct snow white petals. This is not a tree for the impatient gardener though, because it can take up to 12-15 years for flowers to emerge. It is a slow growing beauty that’s in it for the long run. However, once you have waited out its maturity this is a regular, abundant bloomer. Flowers are followed by foliage and pink fruits with scarlet seeds that appear in late summer. The large leaves measuring up to 15 cm long are borne in thin ovals of a mid-green hue. They turn yellow in autumn and fall with the frosts. How Hardy is Magnolia KobusNorthern Japanese Magnolia is beautiful but it is extremely tough. It will withstand severe winters and sub-zero temperatures in soil that is not waterlogged. How To Use Magnolia KobusMagnolia Kobus is the perfect specimen plant for spring blooming. It is a great addition to a large garden border, or planted directly in the lawn in full view of the window. We provide this magnolia as a multi-stemmed specimen which makes it perfect for the natural feel of a wildlife garden. The shade cast by magnolia is light, so you can garden beneath it without the problems that heavy shade can create, and keep the flower display going all year round.  You can also grow this in a large well watered container which will look incredible on a patio. How To Care For Magnolia KobusThis is an excellent tree for chalky conditions, but it will grow well in most soils. Pruning is not required, but you can remove broken or crossed stems in mid-summer after the flowers have finished and the leaves have appeared.Although tough, flower buds may be damaged by late frosts, so it is best to site your Magnolia Kobus in a sheltered position with full sun that is free from freezing winds. Treat it to a thick layer of mulch at the beginning of each year for good healthy growth.Magnolia Kobus is a truly beautiful tree that stops passers-by in their tracks. If you have the patience to wait for an extraordinary flower then this stunning and fragrant tree is the one for you. For a small-sized evergreen option see Magnolia Grandiflora Little Gem.
