Little Women - Louisa May Alcott - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This Penguin Classics edition of Louisa May Alcott''s inspiring tale of sisterhood, Little Women , is edited with an introduction by Elaine Showalter. The charming story of four ''little women'' - Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth - and their wise and patient mother Marmee, was an instant success when first published in 1868. Enduring hardships and enjoying adventures in Civil War New England, the March sisters have been adored for generations. Readers have rooted for Laurie in his pursuit of Jo''s hand, cried over little Beth''s death, and dreamed of travelling through Europe with old Aunt March and Amy. Future writers have found inspiration in Jo''s devotion to her writing. In this simple, enthralling tale, both parts of which are included here, Louisa May Alcott has created four of American literature''s most beloved women. In her enlightening, thoughtful introduction, Elaine Showalter discusses Louisa May Alcott''s influences, and her aspirations for Little Women , as well as the impact the novel has had on such women writers as Joyce Carol Oates and Cynthia Ozick. This edition also includes notes on the text by Siobhan Kilfeather and Vinca Showalter.Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) grew up surrounded by American writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Henry David Thoreau. Drawing on her experience as a volunteer nurse in the Union Army during the American Civil War, she published Hospital Sketches in 1863, followed by gothic romances and lurid thrillers such as A Modern Mephistopheles and A Long Fatal Love Chase . In 1868, she published Little Women , which proved so popular that it was followed by two sequels. If you enjoyed Little Women you might like Elizabeth Gaskell''s Wives and Daughters , also available in Penguin Classics.

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER: TUDOR ENGLAND AS YOU''VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE, WITH A HEROINE YOU''LL NEVER FORGET''Crisp, transportive, uplifting. The fresh, irreverent voice of Tibb Ingleby is sheer brilliance. I loved it!'' BONNIE GARMUS, author of LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY ---Born a vagabond, Tibb Ingleby has never had a roof of her own. But her mother has taught her that if you''re not too bound by the Big Man''s rules, there are many ways a woman can find shelter in this world. Now her ma is dead in a trick gone wrong and young Tibb is orphaned and alone. As she wends her way across the fields and forests of medieval England, Tibb will discover there are people who will care for her, as well as those who mean her harm. And there are a great many others who are prepared to believe just about anything. And so, when the opportunity presents itself to escape the shackles society has placed on them, Tibb and her new friends conjure an audacious plan: her greatest trickerie yet. The Little Demon - Ronald Wilks - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Little Demon - Ronald Wilks - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

A dark classic of Russia''s silver age, this blackly funny novel recounts a schoolteacher''s descent into sadism, arson and murder.Mad, lascivious, sadistic and ridiculous, the provincial schoolteacher Peredonov torments his students and has hallucinatory fantasies about acts of savagery and degradation, yet to everyone else he is an upstanding member of society. As he pursues the idea of marrying to gain promotion, he descends into paranoia, sexual perversion, arson, torture and murder. Sologub''s anti-hero is one of the great comic monsters of twentieth-century fiction, subsequently lending his name to the brand of sado-masochism known as Peredonovism. The Little Demon (1907) made an immediate star of its author who, refuting suggestions that the work was autobiographical, stated ''No, my dear contemporaries ... it is about you ''. This grotesque mirror of a spiritually bankrupt society is arguably the finest Russian novel to have come out of the Symbolist movement.Fyodor Sologub was born in St Petersburg in 1863. His first two novels Bad Dreams (1896) and The Little Demon (1907) were drawn from his own experiences as schoolmaster in a remote provincial town. For many years Sologub could not find a publisher for The Little Demon but when in 1907 the novel was at last published - to immediate and resounding success - he was able to leave his restricting career and devote himself to literature. In 1921 his wife committed suicide and Sologub died a few years later in 1927. Ronald Wilks studied Russian language and literature at Trinity College,Cambridge, after training as a Naval interpreter, and later Russian literature at London University. He has translated many works from Russian for Penguin Classics, including books by Gorky, Gogol, Pushkin, Tolstoy and Chekhov.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Stars - Gervase Phinn - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Stars - Gervase Phinn - Bog - Penguin Books Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars is the second delightful collection of stories and poems from Gervase Phinn. Following on from the terrific success of A Wayne in a Manger , Gervase Phinn has collected together from his bestselling Dales books his favourite stories about children, and included some poems from his popular Puffin poetry books. In this humorously illustrated book, the stories have one thing in common - the wonderfully funny (and usually innocent) things that children say. What makes Naomi''s granny wobble? What''s the secret ingredient in Richard''s jam tarts? What is Billy''s unconventional method for making babies?Whether they are stories about children who cannot read very well but know the names of many breeds of sheep or children who are more privileged (coming to school in a Wolls-Woyce), they are simply delightful. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Stars is a heart-warming book will enchant you, as Gervase Phinn helps you look at life through a child''s eyes - and that''s quite a special thing.''Gervase Phinn''s memoirs have made him a hero in school staff-rooms'' Daily Telegraph Gervase Phinn is an author and educator from Rotherham who, after teaching for fourteen years in a variety of schools, moved to North Yorkshire to be a school inspector. He has written autobiographies, novels, plays, collections of poetry and stories, as well as a number of books about education. He holds five fellowships, honorary doctorates from Hull, Leicester and Sheffield Hallam universities, and is a patron of a number of children''s charities and organizations. He is married with four adult children. His books include The Other Side of the Dale, Over Hill and Dale, Head Over Heels in the Dales , The Heart of the Dales, Up and Down in the Dales and Trouble at the Little Village School .
