This book examines the processes of symbolic cultivation of identity promoted by Armenian cultural elites in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, focusing on the transmission of positive language ideologies and emotional elements related to collective memory. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, and a range of primary materials, this work sheds light on the role of the Armenian alphabet in legitimizing collective visions of ‘distinctiveness’ and of the Armenian Genocide remembrance in shaping non-exclusive, transnational patterns of belonging. While contributing to the study of the complex dynamics and challenges of ‘Armenian survival’ across space and time, it situates the issue in the unique context of Bulgaria, analyzing, moreover, the impact of proximity to Turkey.

In this study, the author examines works of German-language literature and film from the nineteenth and twentieth century in order to chart a certain kind of otherness. Common to all of the examined cultural products are aspects of gender, sexuality, a notion of home or belonging, and pressures of abjection. Other elements of identity include race and disease. The characters in the analyzed works encounter both mutual dependence and abhorrence, which complicate their experiences in space and time. This analysis demonstrates that acceptance and belonging are difficult to attain, particularly in the fraught power dynamics in these works. This book includes discussions of works by Frank Wedekind, Robert Musil, Kutluğ Ataman, and Pierre Sanoussi-Bliss.

This work looks into the mechanics of reciprocal influence exertion in educational policy-making. The neoinstitutionalist isomorphism theory and the externalization thesis offer significant theoretical insights into the influence of international organizations on state education systems. While the majority of works in this field presuppose the challenges to education which spring from this process to be real and pre-exist the discursive process, the study steps back in the debate and takes closer look at its constellations. This book deals with reasons for the persistence of the practice of female genital cutting (FGC) among the Kurya in Tanzania. The author identifies contradictory understandings of meanings regarding the practice among government representatives, activists who attempt to curb it, and local people involved in traditional social institutions closely linked up with the practice. Existing intervention programmes lack the involvement of local community members in planning and implementation. The book concludes that local beliefs that are embedded in traditional discourse still have a strong influence on fostering the practice, although some elements of change are currently observed. It recommends intervention programmes based on in-depth cultural knowledge, and concludes that addressing the problem in its local context is crucial for efforts directed at stopping the practice.

What happens in our brain when we create a story? Based on neuro-cognitivism, the study of narratives – ranging from novels to “life-stories”, which relate to interstitial topics – has become more rigorous. In fact, an unparalleled panorama of constants, cemented since the Upper Palaeolithic, has been added to an unprecedented awareness of how each cultural habitat shapes the narratives of its inhabitants. This occured according to a particular neuro-cognitive style, thus limiting the so-called “authorial” freedom. Narratives – whether they originate from the Muses or from the voice of a completely illiterate individual – are like compressors that can zip together all the most crucial elements in our existence: time, space, intentions, purposes, agents and instrumental actions. For this reason, they represent an inexhaustible object of research.

An Examination of Characters and Spaces in Film Narratives in the Context of Panopticon and Chronotope within the Framework of Narratology Theory -

This study aims at analyzing the characters and spaces in films (writing case studies) in the framework of the Theory of Narrative in the context of the concepts of panopticon and chronotope. In the context of the relation of the spaces with the story, the spaces, where Bal separated according to the movement types of characters as steady spaces and dynamically functioning spaces, were determined according to the context in which the characters could use their existence on the basis of the qualities of the space in the narrative of the film. In this manner, the exterior and interior spaces that are presented in film narratives are analyzed in the context of Bal’s commentated facts and the facts that are grounded on. While examining the spaces in terms of the effect of these spaces on the plot, evaluations were made about the causal motivation of the spectator while watching the narrative. The concepts of panopticon and chronotope make it possible to examine the narrative elements in detail and try to explain how the process of the narrative interpretation of spectators is developed.

The plays discussed in this book share important common points. They are set in London and illustrative of the realities of the metropolis. Performed extensively on the English stage and indeed throughout the English-speaking world, the plays reflect different backgrounds, origins, and life trajectories of the playwrights. There are perceptible differences in the attitudes as well as modes of expression of the playwrights. The works considered here are inextricably connected to London and they function as important documents of social history. They are examples of developing dramatic forms within which London and Londoners appear as both the dissolving and unifying elements of the broad spectrum of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century society. The themes and concerns of these works accurately reflect those of Victorian/Edwardian Londoners. The aim of this short book is to present the elements of a systematic theory of certain types of finitely additive probability measures on a set of positive integers. The conventional name of this measures is «density» with an adjective. Every set of positive integers is finite or infinite countable. It is, thus, impossible to consider a sigma additive probability measure defined on a certain class of the sets of positive integers, which could distinguish between the finite and infinite sets of positive integers. The greatness of the first is negligible. From the point of view of cardinality, the second has the same greatness. If we want to consider the measure of greatness, which could divide the sets of positive integers from a certain aspect of their structure, it is more convenient to consider the finitely additive measure. We shall study four most known types of these set functions. One of the important rules in the set of positive integers is played by the relation to divisibility, thus our main attention is devoted to the connection between density and this relation. We try to derive some known results from the basic definitions.

Convention and Contravention in Ben Jonson’s Three Comedies: Volpone, The Alchemist, Bartholomew Fair is a book about Jonson’s convention of comedy that is a disguise for the realities of life. The book aims to show the importance of the truths that are generally away from the human eye in Jonson’s time through scrutiny of Volpone, The Alchemist, and Bartholomew Fair. Selected plays are in a dialogue with Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Measure for Measure, and Twelfth Night, and close analysis of the texts of the plays offers the reader a detailed study of the upside down world of the comedic, carnivalesque period that enables characters free themselves of their responsibilities. The plays end in harmony, taking all scattered parts of the disarray of the carnival time back to its normal. Madness, lack of morality, deceitfulness, confusion, misunderstandings, and disguise are common elements in all the plays discussed in the book. Ben Jonson takes the opportunity and presents a critical viewpoint about the Elizabethan and Jacobean laxity and leniency, making the carnivalesque spirit central to his criticism. This book intends to immerse into ways in which characters create chaos within themselves in the selected plays. Shakespeare’s selected plays are supplementary texts that richly add layers, branches, and offices to the reading of Jonson’s society rather than just enriching the comedic impact of the performances.
