Chinese Language Teachers’ Beliefs and Experiences in Denmark - Li Wang - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Chinese Language Teachers’ Beliefs and Experiences in Denmark - Li Wang - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

This book presents recent advances in foreign language education as well as recent work on Chinese language education and CFL teacher development in international contexts. It also reports the results of three qualitative studies on the experiences and beliefs of teachers of the Chinese language in in Denmark. There are rising concerns over quality issues in both Chinese language education and teacher development in Scandinavian countries and worldwide, broadly due to China’s rapid growth and the increasing worldwide popularity of Chinese. What CFL (Chinese as a Foreign Language) teachers believe in teaching and experience in the intercultural context have proposed new questions and issues. The book addresses issues and topics such as teacher beliefs about Chinese language teaching, factors shaping teacher beliefs, the teaching of Chinese by both native and non-native teachers, Chinese language and culture teaching, intercultural encounters and challenges, etc. It provides both macro- and micro-level insights into the key issues and challenges in the development of Chinese language teachers in Denmark and the Scandinavian region. Taking the perspectives of Chinese language teachers’ beliefs and experiences, this book reveals teachers’ beliefs about their roles, objectives, and ways of teaching at the micro level. It also discusses the macro-level factors that promote or impede the adaptation of native-speaking teachers of Chinese and the development of Chinese-language education in this Nordic country. It will be of interest to teachers, teacher educators, administrators of Chinese as a foreign language, and researchers concerned with foreign language education in an intercultural context.

Small-scale Computational Vibration of Carbon Nanotubes: Composite Structure - Muzamal Hussain - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Small-scale Computational Vibration of Carbon Nanotubes: Composite Structure - Muzamal Hussain - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

This book presents orthotropic vibration modeling and analysis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which be helpful in applications such as oscillators and in non-destructive testing, and also vibrations characteristics of armchair double-walled CNT by means of nonlocal elasticity shell model. The nonlocal shell model is established by inferring the nonlocal elasticity equations in to Kelvin’s theory, which is our particular motivation. The suggested method to investigate the solution of fundamental Eigen relations is wave propagation, which is a well-known and efficient technique to develop the fundamental frequency equations. The frequencies of three different types of SWCNTs are calculated. Also, the vibrations of the chiral single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNTs) with non-local theory using wave propagation approach is investigated. It has been investigated that by increasing the nonlocal parameter decreases the frequencies and on increasing the aspect ratio increases the frequencies throughout the computation frequencies of clamped-free lower than that of clamped-clamped. Carbon nanotubes have a variety of applications because of their distinctive molecular structure and show unique electronic and mechanical properties because of their curvature. Nanotubes and micro-beams can be cited as one of the very applicable micro- and nano-structures in various systems, namely, sensing devices, communications and the quantum mechanics. The application of the tiny structures, specifically, carbon nanotubes in the sensors and actuators enforce the engineers to study vibrational properties of those structures experimentally and theoretically. In addition, they are utilized in different fields such as bioengineering, tissue engineering, computer engineering, optics, energy and environmental systems.

Aspects of Personal Privacy in Communications - Problems, Technology and Solutions - Geir M. Koien - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Aspects of Personal Privacy in Communications - Problems, Technology and Solutions - Geir M. Koien - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The modern society is rapidly becoming a fully digital society. This has many benefits, but unfortunately it also means that personal privacy is threatened. The threat does not so much come from a 1984 style Big Brother, but rather from a set of smaller big brothers. The small big brothers are companies that we interact with; they are public services and institutions. Many of these little big brothers are indeed also being invited to our private data by ourselves. Privacy as a subject can be problematic. At the extreme it is personal freedom against safety and security. We shall not take a political stand on personal privacy and what level of personal freedom and privacy is the correct one.Aspects of Personal Privacy in Communications is mostly about understanding what privacy is and some of the technologies may help us to regain a bit of privacy. We discuss what privacy is about, what the different aspects of privacy may be and why privacy needs to be there by default. There are boundaries between personal privacy and societal requirements, and inevitably society will set limits to our privacy (Lawful Interception, etc.).There are technologies that are specifically designed to help us regain some digital privacy. These are commonly known as Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs). We investigate some these PETs including MIX networks, Onion Routing and various privacy-preserving methods. Other aspects include identity and location privacy in cellular systems, privacy in RFID, Internet-of-Things (IoT) and sensor networks amongst others. Some aspects of cloud systems are also covered.

Algorithms for Sample Preparation with Microfluidic Lab-on-Chip - Sukanta Bhattacharjee - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Algorithms for Sample Preparation with Microfluidic Lab-on-Chip - Sukanta Bhattacharjee - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Recent microfluidic technologies have brought a complete paradigm shift in automating biochemical processing on a tiny lab-on-chip (a.k.a. biochip) that replaces expensive and bulky instruments traditionally used in implementing bench-top laboratory protocols. Biochips have already made a profound impact on various application domains such as clinical diagnostics, DNA analysis, genetic engineering, and drug discovery, among others. They are capable of precisely manipulating micro-/pico-liter quantities of fluids, and provide integrated support for mixing, storage, transportation, and sensing, on-chip. In almost all bioprotocols, sample preparation plays an important role, which includes dilution and mixing of several fluids satisfying certain volumetric ratios. However, designing algorithms that minimize reactant-cost and sample-preparation time suited for microfluidic chips poses a great challenge from the perspective of protocol mapping, scheduling, and physical design. Algorithms for Sample Preparation with Microfluidic Lab-on-Chip attempts to bridge the widening gap between biologists and engineers by introducing, from the fundamentals, several state-of-the-art computer-aided-design (CAD) algorithms for sample preparation with digital and flow-based microfluidic biochips. Technical topics discussed in the book include: Basics of digital and flow-based microfluidic lab-on-chipComprehensive review of state-of-the-art sample preparation algorithmsSample-preparation algorithms for digital microfluidic lab-on-chipSample-preparation algorithms for flow-based microfluidic lab-on-chip

Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture - - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture - - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The slime mould Physarum polycephalum was a source of explosive growth of bioengineered hybrid sensing and computing devices in the past decade. Being in its vegetative state, the plasmodium, the slime mould configures its protoplasmic network to optimize its geometry with relation to patterns of attractants and repellents. The slime mould’s adaptability, polymorphism and aestheticism inspired artists and architects. The slime mould has been seen as a self-conscious liquid form continuously changing its shape in response to external stimulation and due to interactions of thousands of micro-oscillators in its body. Elusiveness is a magic feature of the slime mould. One moment the slime mould gives you a solution to a mathematical problem by a shape of its body, next moment it changes its shape and the solution ,disappears.Slime Mould in Arts and Architecture presents a set of unique chapters written by leading artists, architects and scientists, which resulted from creative translations of the slime mould behaviour into forms and sounds, unconventional investigations and sensorial experiences and the slime mould ability to remove boundaries between living and artificial, solid and fluid, science and arts. The book gives readers unique tools for designing architectural forms and creative works using the slime mould, understanding how pro-cognitive living substrates can be used in everyday life, it sparks new ideas and initiates further progress in many fields or arts, architecture, science and engineering.

Quality of Higher Education - Yihuan Zou - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Quality of Higher Education - Yihuan Zou - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Quality in higher education was not invented in recent decades – universities have always possessed mechanisms for assuring the quality of their work. The rising concern over quality is closely related to the changes in higher education and its social context. Among others, the most conspicuous changes are the massive expansion, diversification and increased cost in higher education, and new mechanisms of accountability initiated by the state. With these changes the traditional internally enacted academic quality-keeping has been given an important external dimension – quality assurance, which requires higher education institutions to continuously demonstrate and improve performance, and which also provides new systems of rewards and sanctions. However, the complex impacts of quality assurance policies have shown a need to further understand the quality issue in higher education. This book is about constructing a more inclusive understanding of quality in higher education through combining the macro, meso and micro levels, i.e. from the perspectives of national policy, higher education institutions as organizations in society, individual teaching staff and students. It covers both theoretical constructions for understanding quality and empirical investigation in the Chinese context. The questions addressed are: How is quality of higher education perceived by the institution, teaching staff and students, respectively? What are the main concerns for the institution, teaching staff and students in their own pursuit of quality? It has been concluded that quality of higher education is not only about educational quality, but also about expanding life chances for the students, prosperity in the administrative system for the teaching staff, and organizational prosperity for the institution. With regard to quality assurance and accountability in higher education special attention should be given to the values pursued and be careful to balance between immediate, single-value efficiency and sustainable development and a wider-range of values that higher education serves.

The Internet of Women - Accelerating Culture Change - - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

The Internet of Women - Accelerating Culture Change - - Bog - River Publishers - Plusbog.dk

Female scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians worldwide are making historic contributions to their fields. The modern workforce is closer to gender-equal than it has ever been, and many efforts are in place to support further progress. The Internet of Women provides an exciting look at personal narratives and case studies of female leaders and cultural shifts around the globe that illustrate this promising trend. From the United Nations'' emphasis on girls and technology education in the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) to the increased female labor force in Zambia, a policy change that was inspired by the MDGs (UN Millennial Development Goals), The Internet of Women captures stunning examples of progress from around the world and men working hand in hand with women advocating for cultural change. Scholars and practitioners lament the lack of women leading and working in leading organizations in the technology industry. Gender equality and female participation in the tech field is critical to both developing and developed economies; nevertheless, this gap remains a global phenomenon. The lack of female leadership is particularly extreme at the highest echelons of leading technology organizations. Few publicly traded tech companies have female CEOs - in fact, most nations have zero female leadership in the tech industry. This gap does indicate a slow pace of progress for gender equality in tech employment. Women''s pay still lags nearly a decade behind, according to the World Economic Forum, meaning that women''s on average pay today is the equivalent to that of similarly qualified and similarly employed men in 2006. Without significant progress, the current rate of change will not lead to parity for 118 years, according to the World Economic Forum (WEF). However there''s significant work being done to shift this tide. Take for instance Michelle Lee, the first female Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), reflects on her childhood Girl Scout badge in sewing and cooking and how that memory inspired to create an IP badge that exposes young women to the process of invention. Social entrepreneur, investor, and Malala Fund co-founder Shiza Shahid shares her efforts beginning from mentoring young women in Pakistan to her current work directing more investment to women innovators around the globe. And Elizabeth Isele, a senior fellow in Social Innovation at Babson College, shares her research on women and ageism saying we need to retire the word retirement. The book is divided into six parts, each with unique areas of focus:• Millennials Leading: Exploring Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Next Generation of Women in Technology• Men and Women Empowering One Another• Bold Leadership: Women Changing the Culture of Investment and Entrepreneurship• Educating for the 21st Century• Breaking the Glass Ceiling: A Generation of Women Forging into Technology Leadership• Emerging Fields of TechnologyThe Internet of Women gathers examples about the increasingly inclusive and progressive gender culture in technology from over 30 countries. Stories range from an entrepreneur in Dubai partnering with private and public sector entities to accelerate blockchain technology to a young British woman moving to Silicon Valley to launch an artificial intelligence platform and incubator. The book is intended for corporations, academic institutions, the private sector, government agencies, gender experts, and the general public, and its key benefit is to let the reader understand a path towards implementing diversity overall globally. It also showcases the strategies, tools, and tactical execution on how create cultural change in all parts of the world.
