The Micro-historian's Guide to Research, Evidence, & Conclusions - Reginald W. Bacon - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Micro-Historian’s Guide to Research, Evidence, & Conclusions imparts useful guidance to motivated historians, genealogists, special interest researchers, and local history enthusiasts. As long-buried sources become available via the internet, more regular folks without a Ph.D. in history are joining the fun of information-gathering and shining new light on under-explored history – yet often with no foundation of method. The author answers the call with this volume, “paying forward” the guidance received from long-ago mentors as well as from present-day historians and archivists. Topics include research planning & execution, evaluation of evidence, formulation of conclusions, and the crafting of a summary narrative. Each topic is enriched by practical examples from the author’s experience. The aim is to help the new practitioner build a foundation of research skills that leads to evidence-based conclusions. The author’s perspective of experience – as a disciplined researcher, but also with roots as a no-nonsense old-school newspaper reporter – occasionally prompts a mild tease of the buttoned-down genealogy proof standard, or conversely, a deflating poke at flabby interpretation … and moribund academic writing … wherever it may fester. The Micro-Historian’s Guide to Research, Evidence, & Conclusions draws theory from dozens of history, genealogy, historiography, and research giants through the ages. The book also pays tribute to that long-ago cigar-chomping newspaper editor who admonished a young reporter: “Yer mother sez she loves ya’? You still gotta check it out!”

Opioids 360 - - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

This book takes a full 360 macro to micro approach to understanding the problems presented by opioids. The macro approach examines the international role played by other countries in the production of foreign-made fentanyl currently flooding the streets of the United States. This approach continues when looking at the responses of various state and local governments but takes a micro approach when looking at the effects on individuals such as athletes, students, and patients in pain. This full spectrum approach allows the reader to gain an understanding of the opioid epidemic in a way that has never been presented in other sources. Opioids 360 addresses and explains critical issues, by having experts from various fields come together to focus their attention and knowledge on this problem affecting our nation. The chapters in Opioids 360 are written by experts in the fields of criminology, medicine, economics, psychology, sociology, communication, religion, and ethics. It also includes sections of students talking to students. In the “Beyond Opioids” chapter, five Methodist University undergraduate students talk directly to students across the country about medication issues involving PTSD, Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, and Drug seeking behavior. Practical policy recommendations are offered throughout the book. They are designed to educate as well as to help improve and save lives. This book would be of interest to students and scholars studying criminology, criminal justice, sociology, psychology, medicine, economics and many more.

Wounds to Bind - Jerry Burgan - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The dawn of folk rock comes to life in Jerry Burgan’s unforgettable memoir of the pre-psychedelic 1960s and the summer that changed everything. As a naïve folksinger from Pomona, California, Burgan was thrust to the forefront of the counterculture and its aftermath. The Byrds, the Rolling Stones, the Mamas and Papas, Barry McGuire, Bo Diddley and many others make appearances in this 50th Anniversary reminiscence by the surviving cofounder of WE FIVE, the San Francisco electro-folk ensemble whose million-seller, "You Were On My Mind,” entered the world two months before Bob Dylan plugged in an electric guitar at the Newport Folk Festival. Vying with the Byrds to record the first folk-rock hit, Burgan and his lifelong friend Mike Stewart embarked on a road they thought well paved by the latter''s older brother, Kingston Trio member John Stewart. Little did they realize that they would join the largest-ever American generation in an ecstatic, sometimes tortured, journey of invention and disillusion. Wounds to Bind bears witness to a lost and hopeful convergence in American history—that missing link between the folk and rock eras—when Bob Dylan and Sammy Davis Jr. were played on the same radio station in the same hour. A survivor of the human realignments, tragedies and triumphs that followed, Burgan tracks down the demons that drove the genius of We Five cofounder Mike Stewart and sheds light on the 40-year enigma of what became of the band’s reclusive lead singer, Beverly Bivens, a forerunner of Grace Slick, Linda Ronstadt, and Stevie Nicks.
