Big Little Things - Ron Nash - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Little Climber - - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

One category that Falcon has not recently published in is children’s picture books. Climbing, however, has been a core part of the FalconGuides brand and publishing program going back decades. This audience of climbing enthusiasts has collected numerous how-to and where-to guidebooks focused on the best places to climb and how to do it safely and knowledgably. As this audience ages, and as both indoor and outdoor rock climbing remain popular activities in the outdoor recreation space, an illustrated children’s book with an inspiring message may be just the gift many rock-climbing parents would love to give to their children. Colorado-based climbing partners Danielle Sarli and Amanda Hogan teamed up to create Little Climber – an illustrated children’s picture book featuring Mack – a little girl who loves climbing. She climbs trees, telephone poles, and basketball hoops, but is always told to get down by concerned adults. That is until one day at gym, when her teacher, Miss Hill, notices her talent for climbing and shows her that rock climbing – with the proper equipment – is a much safer way for her to climb. The culmination is a climbing trip where Mack discovers that rock climbing can be a fun and safe outlet for her passion, and instead of being told to come down, she’s encouraged to reach the top. This is an inspiring and inclusive story meant to inspire young climbers of all backgrounds. Through Little Climber, Danielle and Amanda hope to empower children, show kids how climbing can be an outlet, and help create a more inclusive climbing community.

Childhood Narcissism - Phd Little - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Childhood Narcissism - Phd Little - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Notice the signs of narcissism in your child and act to curb them before it’s too late! Raising empathetic and unselfish young people in today’s “all about me” world might seem impossible, but parents can insulate children from these harmful influences. Written by a psychologist with decades of clinical experience, Childhood Narcissism explains how selfish, entitled behavior can take root in a child and shows parents how to stop it before it’s too late. Mary Ann Little identifies the early warning signs that can result in a full-blown narcissistic disorder in adulthood. As narcissism is most often anchored in childhood, waiting too long to address these tendencies can be costly. The book explores four psychological structures developing over childhood that nurture a child’s healthy, realistic self-concept and positive model of love and relationships. However, if compromised, these structures can damage a child’s emotional growth. Based on the latest research and theory, the book identifies four parent types that promote narcissistic development. These include hovering/directive, indulgent/permissive, critical/harsh, and inattentive/disengaged parenting. Without meaning to, such parents can create demanding children who do not see themselves realistically and struggle to build and sustain relationships. Sharing her own unique understanding of narcissism, Dr. Little explains that narcissists-to-be (N2Bs) either receive “too much” or “too little” of an essential something in their growing up. “Moderation parenting” is shown to be the key to raising empathetic, unentitled, and caring children.

Little Friends - Stephanie Hemelryk Donald - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Contributing to the growing debates on children and media worldwide, Little Friends explores the pervasive presence of film culture in the lives of children in China. The book also introduces the work of the little-known Children''s Film Studio and the Film Course, a reform-period attempt by Chinese filmmakers and policy leaders to control the media to which schoolchildren were exposed. Stephanie Donald uses expansive firsthand interviews, children''s drawings, and film history to tell a compelling cinematic story before it is forgotten in the onrush of globalized culture. She is especially careful to bring in the interests and experiences of children themselves. The book follows the trajectory of contemporary media analysis in privileging the use as well as the content of media. The author''s "turn" to the end-user enriches her discussion of media literacy, cultural competencies, and—perhaps especially in the Chinese case—consideration of the desired uses of media in relation to state priorities and social expectations. This is a trend that belongs to an era of digital experimentation and commercial development; in interactive television, streamed news and entertainment, and the multiple, unintended uses of Internet and mobile technologies. Notwithstanding the contemporary context, Donald''s arguments consider a range of media deployment that, although not especially new in technological terms, offer new insights into a formalized Chinese media system for children. Scholars and students of Asian and children''s film and education will find this unique work a fascinating window into Chinese culture and society and a provocative exploration of media culture.

The Little Guide to Writing for Impact - Richard Greene - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Little Guide to Writing for Impact - Richard Greene - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

There is a tsunami of research being produced by social scientists, and most of them hope that their work will have impact on public policy. There is an enormous hunger by practitioners for insights into the work they are doing. Far too often, however, there is little connection between the two groups. Researchers complain that practitioners don’t pay enough attention to what they’re writing. Practitioners say that much of what they read isn’t understandable. We propose to write a short, handy guide like Strunk and White’s The Elements of Style, aimed at those who seek to translate their research into impact on the world of public affairs. It will help readers do so in academic journals; dissertations and other research-based papers by graduate and undergraduate students; commentaries for major government-focused publications like Governing and GovExec; op-eds for major publications and local newspapers; think tanks and foundations; policy memos aimed at stakeholders within government agencies and elected officials; and books. It will be designed so that its readers can quickly digest it from cover to cover, but it is our expectation that many will jump from chapter to chapter, seeking just the information they most covet. The chapter titles themselves will be punchy, and sometimes humorous, but with an emphasis on clarity. In addition, we will conclude each chapter with a series of bulleted take-aways, in the form of “Do’s and Don’ts” The chapters will develop lessons based on feedback we have gleaned from leading authors and editors, in addition to the authors’ cumulative 110 years in the realm of public administration. The book will provide specific real-world examples of what works—and what doesn’t. By way of illustration, examples will include a good pitch for an op-ed for a regional or a major newspaper; the opening paragraphs of a particularly well written journal abstract; and multiple concrete examples of clear concise writing – or unclear verbose writing – taken from published work. The result will be a guidebook for preparing more effective writing, as well as creating greater impact for useful policy ideas. Given the growing complexity of government problems and the declining trust in government’s operations, writing for impact has never been more important.
