Preventing Credit Card Fraud - Jen Grondahl Lee - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Report Card - James Patrick Hussey - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Report Card - James Patrick Hussey - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Despite the impact local school board members have on public education, little has been written about them and the experiences and motivations they bring to the board table, particularly from a board member''s perspective. Report Card: The Weekly Education of an American School Board Member fills that void. Authored by James Patrick Hussey, it includes 100 essays ranging from surprisingly interesting treatises on budgets and bond levies to impassioned articles underscoring the role of public education in a free society. Each essay serves as a catalyst for classroom discussions or independent writing assignments that engage students intellectually and often emotionally, in the topic it explores. Hussey uses his extensive experiences in education and journalism to create a work that is intellectually rigorous, but accessible to a wide audience. Unlike some books exploring public policy, Report Card rarely shouts at its readers. Instead, Hussey writes with the humility of someone required to live in his community after the newspaper columns from which these essays are adapted, were published. It will be of special interest to persons with current or anticipated roles in America''s public schools, particularly administrators, teachers, education students, and elected officials. This book will also make an excellent supplemental text for teacher preparation or educational leadership classes, from introductory courses to doctoral seminars.

The Tigerbelles - Aime Alley Card - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Tigerbelles - Aime Alley Card - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Tigerbelles tells the epic story of the 1960 Tennessee State University all-black women’s track team, which found Olympic glory at the 1960 games in Rome. The author tells an epic story of desire, success and failure—of beating the odds—against the backdrop of a changing America, but tells it in an intimate way. Readers will come to know the individuals’ unique struggles and triumphs, while also understanding how these dreams emerged and solidified just as the country was struggling to leave the Jim Crow era behind. Coach Edward Temple pushed each team member to the limit and saw the possibilities in them that they often did not see themselves. The elite group of talent included Wilma Rudolph, Barbara Jones, Lucinda Williams, Martha Hudson, Willye B. White and Shirley Crowder: women who once were and should still be known world-wide. Ultimately the team’s drive was for more than medals: Coach Temple and the Tigerbelles wanted to change the world''s perception of what a group of young Black women in the Jim Crow south were capable of. Tigerbelles is a multi-layered inspirational tale of triumph over adversity. Operating on a shoestring budget and pitted dirt track, they nevertheless shared a common goal: to represent the USA in Track and Field. The arc of their story starts in Tennessee in the summer of 1960, and continues through the national meets in Texas, training in Kansas, media events in New York City and finally the Olympics in Rome in the early fall. Based on memoirs and interviews with surviving team members, including Coach Temple, this is the story of an impossible dream come true.

Personal Finance for Musicians - Bobby Borg - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Many young musicians will admit they know little about personal finance. They have trouble budgeting what little money they make from their part-time jobs, carry debt incurred by ringing up credit cards on studio equipment they cannot afford, and get lured into using the latest investment apps that have them putting grandma’s birthday card money into investments they may not even understand. Even worse, when that rare musician gains financial and career success, they often go on a mad spending spree only to end up completely broke ten years later. You don’t want this to happen to you, right? This is why a simple and easy-to-read book written specifically for musicians about personal finance is so vital to understanding and success. Written by a 30-year expert in the music business together with a 30-year specialist in the investment industry, Personal Finance for Musicians provides a brief overview of everything you should have learned in school but didn’t. Topics include: developing the right mind-set, paying-off debt, budgeting and saving, building credit, dealing with banks, paying taxes, insuring your assets, understanding investments, examining music revenue streams, learning the lingo, seeking financial help, avoiding financial noise, and more. This book provides an excellent introduction for musicians whose knowledge is limited or who are new to the critically important subject of personal finance. The objective is to help put you on the right track to better financial health and inspire you to learn more without intimidating you, or even worse—boring you.

Changing the Course - Peter May - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Changing the Course - Peter May - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The compelling, little-known story of golfer Charlie Sifford and attorney Stanley Mosk who together made history by taking on the PGA and their Caucasians Only by-law. It began with a chance meeting at a Los Angeles country club in 1959. That was the day Charlie Sifford, the first Black golfer to get his PGA card, and Stanley Mosk, a crusading civil rights attorney and California Supreme Court justice, met for the first time. Little did either of them know that it would grow into a history-making alliance that would end segregation in professional golf. In Changing the Course: How Charlie Sifford and Stanley Mosk Integrated the PGA, Peter May tells the captivating story of Sifford and Mosk’s battle to end the rank racial discrimination that had been codified in the constitution of the PGA. Black golfers who preceded Sifford, such as Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes, had unsuccessfully challenged the PGA’s discriminatory policy. Sifford had been fighting the PGA for years just to be able to compete with the white players. Mosk had little knowledge of the PGA or the fact that Blacks were being discriminated against by the organization’s by-laws. But the golfer had a cause that the attorney general was only too eager to champion. The two made for a powerful pair. Changing the Course focuses on the individual journeys of Sifford and Mosk before delving into the crucial intersection of their lives that changed the professional golf world forever. Their stories provide a window into the changing landscape of mid-20 th century America when the nation was forced to confront its history of racial injustice in professional sports and beyond.

The Sovereignty Wars - Stewart Patrick - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Sovereignty Wars - Stewart Patrick - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Protecting sovereignty while advancing American interests in the global age Americans have long been protective of the country''s sovereignty—beginning when George Washington retired as president with the admonition for his successors to avoid “permanent” alliances with foreign powers. Ever since, the nation has faced persistent, often heated debates about how to maintain that sovereignty, and whether it is endangered when the United States enters international organizations, treaties, and alliances about which Washington warned. As the recent election made clear, sovereignty is also one of the most frequently invoked, polemical, and misunderstood concepts in politics—particularly American politics. The concept wields symbolic power, implying something sacred and inalienable: the right of the people to control their fate without subordination to outside authorities. Given its emotional pull, however, the concept is easily highjacked by political opportunists. By playing the sovereignty card, they can curtail more reasoned debates over the merits of proposed international commitments by portraying supporters of global treaties or organizations as enemies of motherhood and apple pie. Such polemics distract Americans from what is really at stake in the sovereignty debate: namely, the ability of the United States to shape its destiny in a global age. The United States cannot successfully manage globalization, much less insulate itself from cross-border threats, on its own. As global integration deepens and cross-border challenges grow, the nation''s fate is increasingly tied to that of other countries, whose cooperation will be needed to exploit the shared opportunities and mitigate the common risks of interdependence. The Sovereignty Wars is intended to help today''s policymakers think more clearly about what is actually at stake in the sovereignty debate and to provide some criteria for determining when it is appropriate to make bargains over sovereignty—and how to make them.

Investigating America’s Most Notorious Strip Club - Mark Sewell - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Investigating America’s Most Notorious Strip Club - Mark Sewell - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

The Gold Club is the first book from a law enforcement official that details the facts about the FBI’s famous investigation. Retired FBI Agent Mark Sewell was a rookie agent in 1997 when he was assigned to investigate mafia associate Steve Kaplan and his enormously successful Atlanta strip club; the largest single money maker for the Gambino Crime Family. Accompanied by a small team of investigators, the hand-picked unit followed the money trail, no matter where it led. A highly publicized 4 A.M. search warrant of the famous club started a snowball effect that would implicate a Gambino Captain, police officers, strippers, and many of the most recognized professional athletes in America. The subsequent 2001 trial was covered nationally by the leading media outlets, from television newscasts to late night talk shows to nationally published magazines. A jury soon heard evidence of shockingly bold crimes, to include extortion, credit card fraud, tax evasion, money laundering and prostitution. Then, in the fourth month of the trial, more than a dozen defendants surprisingly admitted their guilt, in a secretly negotiated plea deal. Steve Kaplan’s subsequent forfeiture would amount to millions of dollars, making the Gold Club investigation the FBI’s most successful financial win against an Organized Crime Family in the agency’s history. But the FBI’s case against Steve Kaplan was far from ‘normal’. As eighteen defense attorneys took aim at the author, allegations were broadcast, and tempers flared publicly. From witness tampering to allegations of FBI Agent misconduct, the Gold Club investigation produced new, sensational headlines daily. Retired FBI Agent Mark Sewell was at the center of the storm that dominated media headlines in the summer of 2001 and provides a never-before seen inside view of the FBI’s famous mafia prosecution.

A Skeptic's Case for Nuclear Disarmament - Michael E. O'hanlon - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

A Skeptic's Case for Nuclear Disarmament - Michael E. O'hanlon - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

" In 2007 two former U.S. secretaries of state, a defense secretary, and a former senator wrote persuasively in the Wall Street Journal that the time had come to move seriously toward a nuclear-free world. Almost two years later, the Global Zero movement was born with its chief aim to rid the world of such weapons once and for all by 2030. But is it realistic or even wise to envision a world without nuclear weapons? More and more people seem to think so. Barack Obama has declared ""America''s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons."" But that is easier said than done. Michael O''Hanlon places his own indelible stamp on this critical issue, putting forth a ""friendly skeptic''s case for nuclear disarmament."" Calls to ""ban the bomb"" are as old as the bomb itself, but the pace and organization of nonproliferation campaigns have picked up greatly recently. The growing Global Zero movement, for example, wants treaty negotiations to begin in 2019. Would this be prudent or even feasible in a world that remains dangerous, divided, and unpredictable? After all, America''s nuclear arsenal has been its military trump card for much of the period since World War II. Pursuing a nuclear weapons ban prematurely or carelessly could alarm allies, leading them to consider building their own weapons—the opposite of the intended effect. O''Hanlon clearly presents the dangers of nuclear weapons and the advantages of disarmament as a goal. But even once an accord is in place, he notes, temporary suspension of restrictions may be necessary in response to urgent threats such as nuclear ""cheating"" or discovery of an advanced biological weapons program. To take all nuclear options off the table forever strengthens the hand of those that either do not make that pledge or do not honor it. For the near term, traditional approaches to arms control, including dismantling existing bomb inventories, can pave the way to make a true nonproliferation regime possible in the decades ahead. "

Pivotal Policies in Delaware - Edward C. Ratledge - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Pivotal Policies in Delaware - Edward C. Ratledge - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

This book identifies ten pivotal policies in Delaware that still impact public life in this small state. Much that has happened since the mid-twentieth century in Delaware public policy evolved from particular events. These events consisted of court decisions, laws passed, or incidents that happened to particular persons. They prompted public policies, the effects of which were not clearly understood, that were often counter to what was anticipated, had undesirable side effects, or were inadequate to deal with the problems encountered. This chronicle begins in 1954 when the U.S. Supreme Court confronted racially segregated Delaware with the necessity to desegregate its public schools " with all deliberate speed." Chapter 2 evolves from 1964, when the Supreme Court ordained—by virtue of its "one-person-one-vote" decision—that states end over-representation of rural voters in their state legislatures. Chapter 3 turns to the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King followed by the Delaware National Guards occupation of Wilmington for over nine months. Chapter 4 focuses on the 1970 establishment of the cabinet system in Delaware''s state government. Chapter 5 concentrates on the 1971 enactment to protect Delaware''s coastal zone, and its aftermath. Chapter 6 records 1977 as a turning point for Delaware''s response to increasing crime by option for increasing punishment in place of rehabilitating prisoners. Chapter 7 highlights how the General Assembly''s over-ride of the 1978 budget evoked consensus and bipartisan politics . Chapter 8 focuses on the newly ensconced pro-business climate, illustrated in 1951 by the Financial Center Development Act that deregulated credit card banking. Chapter 9 tells that story of how Delaware sought to confront its high cancer rate, beginning with the 1990 report of the Governor''s advisory council. Chapter 10 concentrates on Delaware''s troubled efforts to develop energy policies, beginning with the 1999 legislation deregulating electric power. The book''s Afterword broadly assesses how these major policy developments have effected systemic institutional change in how Delaware is governed.

Privacy in the Information Age - Fred H. Cate - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

Privacy in the Information Age - Fred H. Cate - Bog - Rowman & Littlefield - Plusbog.dk

" Electronic information networks offer extraordinary advantages to business, government, and individuals in terms of power, capacity, speed, accessibility, and cost. But these same capabilities present substantial privacy issues. With an unprecedented amount of data available in digital format--which is easier and less expensive to access, manipulate, and store--others know more about you than ever before. Consider this: data routinely collected about you includes your health, credit, marital, educational, and employment histories; the times and telephone numbers of every call you make and receive; the magazines you subscribe to and the books your borrow from the library; your cash withdrawals; your purchases by credit card or check; your electronic mail and telephone messages; where you go on the World Wide Web. The ramifications of such a readily accessible storehouse of information are astonishing. Governments have responded to these new challenges to personal privacy in a wide variety of ways. At one extreme, the European Union in 1995 enacted sweeping regulation to protect personal information; at the other extreme, privacy law in the United States and many other countries is fragmented, inconsistent, and offers little protection for privacy on the internet and other electronic networks. For all the passion that surrounds discussions about privacy, and the recent attention devoted to electronic privacy, surprisingly little consensus exists about what privacy means, what values are served--or compromised--by extending further legal protection to privacy, what values are affected by existing and proposed measures designed to protect privacy, and what principles should undergird a sensitive balancing of those values. In this book, Fred Cate addresses these critical issues in the context of computerized information. He provides an overview of the technologies that are provoking the current privacy debate and discusses the range of legal issues that these technologies raise. He examines the central elements that make up the definition of privacy and the values served, and liabilities incurred, by each of those components. Separate chapters address the regulation of privacy in Europe and the United States. The final chapter identifies four sets of principles for protecting information privacy. The principles recognize the significance of individual and collective nongovernmental action, the limited role for privacy laws and government enforcement of those laws, and the ultimate goal of establishing multinational principles for protecting information privacy. Privacy in the Information Age involves questions that cut across the fields of business, communications, economics, and law. Cate examines the debate in provocative, jargon-free, detail. "
