Anti-Social Behaviour - Cate Curtis - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Anti-Social Behaviour - Cate Curtis - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

"Neatly and succinctly takes readers through ways to understand and interpret the label of ‘antisocial’ behaviour in a wider context, showing how it is socially, historically and culturally produced as well as understood in professional health and policing or correctional contexts." - Cathy Coleborne, University of Newcastle, Australia "A timely work given the present global shift in the use of social media and violence. Cate Curtis’ book serves as a multinational mini-meta-analytic review of anti-social behaviours" - Richard Langford, University of Hawaii West Oahu "Cate Curtis’ coverage in this book is breath-taking. It is centred on challenging taken for granted assumptions concerning the three Rs: ‘risk’, ‘resilience’ and ‘recovery’ whilst questioning what is respectable everyday activities and extreme behaviour in culture and society." - Shane Blackman, Canterbury Christ Church University Cate Curtis seeks to disrupt assumptions about anti-social behaviour by bringing together a host of key concepts and theories applicable to the field. Going beyond individualised discussions, the book explores broader concepts such as the social construction of ‘anti-social behaviour’, ‘risk’ and ‘resilience’, and the social contents and influences under which these are most likely to occur. An excellent companion for researchers and postgraduate students in of anti-social behaviour across criminology, social psychology, sociology and social work.

The Postemotional Bully - Stjepan Mestrovic - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Postemotional Bully - Stjepan Mestrovic - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The topics of bullying and hazing have sparked interest and discussion in recent years. Hazing is a crime in the United States, and Western nations have made efforts to stamp out bullying in schools, the workplace, and institutions. However, for the most part, bullying and hazing are ill-defined and lack theoretical perspective. Mestrovic brings classical as well as contemporary social theory to bear on this discussion. Thorstein Veblen defined the predatory barbarian as the social type, enshrined by modernity, who prefers to use force over peacable means to achieve ends. On the other extreme, Marcel Mauss wrote about the spirit of the gift and its obligations - to give, to receive, and to reciprocate - as the fundamental basis of social life. Yet, he argued that the spirit of modernity was disappearing with the progress of modernity. Mestrovic traces this fundamental opposition between barbaric force or bullying versus benign obligation that is the spirit of the gift through a host of modernist and postmodernist thinkers and theories. He introduces the concept of the ′postemotional bully′ as an alternative to both of these major bodies of social theory. The postemotional bully, as a social type, is fungible, beset by screen-images on media and social media that are isolating, and is at the mercy of the peer-group. Case studies focus on bullying and hazing, specifically the cases of an American solider who committed suicide in Afghanistan, instances of torture at Abu Ghraib, and the murder of a 23-year-old African-American inmate in a Southern state prison in the US.

The Politics of Fear - Ruth Wodak - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Politics of Fear - Ruth Wodak - Bog - Sage Publications Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Far-right populist politics have arrived in the mainstream. We are now witnessing the shameless normalization of a political discourse built around nationalism, xenophobia, racism, sexism, antisemitism and Islamophobia. But what does this change mean? What caused it? And how does far-right populist discourse work? The Politics of Fear traces the trajectory of far-right politics from the margins of the political landscape to its very centre. It explores the social and historical mechanisms at play, and expertly ties these to the "micro-politics" of far-right language and discourse. From speeches to cartoons to social media posts, Ruth Wodak systematically analyzes the texts and images used by these groups, laying bare the strategies, rhetoric and half-truths the far-right employ. The revised second edition of this best-selling book includes: - - A range of vignettes analyzing specific instances of far-right discourse in detail. - - Expanded discussion of the "normalization" of far-right discourse. - - A new chapter exploring the challenges to liberal democracy. - - An updated glossary of far-right parties and movements. - - More discussion of the impact of social media on the rise of the far-right. - Critical, analytical and impassioned, The Politics of Fear is essential reading for anyone looking to understand how far-right and populist politics have moved into the mainstream, and what we can do about it.
