Design and Development of Model Predictive Primary Control of Micro Grids - K. Shanti Swarup - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

This book provides a design and development perspective MPC for micro-grid control, emphasizing step-by-step conversion of a nonlinear MPC to linear MPC preserving critical aspects of nonlinear MPC. The book discusses centralized and decentralized MPC control algorithms for a generic modern-day micro-grid consisting of vital essential constituents. It starts with the nonlinear MPC formulation for micro-grids. It also moves towards the linear time-invariant and linear time-variant approximations of the MPC for micro-grid control. The contents also discuss how the application of orthonormal special functions can improve computational complexity of MPC algorithms. It also highlights various auxiliary requirements like state estimator, disturbance compensator for robustness, selective harmonic eliminator for eliminating harmonics in the micro-grid, etc. These additional requirements are crucial for the successful online implementation of the MPC. In the end, the book shows how a well-designed MPC is superior in performance compared to the conventional micro-grid primary controllers discussed above. The key topics discussed in this book include - the detailed modeling of micro-grid components; operational modes in micro-grid and their control objectives; conventional micro-grid primary controllers; the importance of MPC as a micro-grid primary controller; understanding of MPC operation; nonlinear MPC formulation; linear approximations of MPC; application of special functions in the MPC formulation; and other online requirements for the MPC implementation. The examples in the book are available both from a calculation point of view and as MATLAB codes. This helps the students get acquainted with the subject first and then allows them to implement the subject they learn in software for further understanding and research.

Micro-evidence for Peacebuilding Theories and Policies - - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

Micro-evidence for Peacebuilding Theories and Policies - - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

Relying on micro-evidence on the repercussions of civil conflicts, this edited book explores theories and policies of post-conflict peacebuilding. Reconsidering existing knowledge on the civil conflict and peacebuilding processes in particular, it empirically presents the relationships between conflict dynamics and citizens'' norms, values, and preferences in the post-conflict context. Once it occurs, civil conflict brings enormous suffering on the local society. As a consequence of wartime coercion and violence that tear it apart, citizens come to harbor fear, distrust, and hatred of others, especially of those who are in different sociopolitical groups. This can significantly alter the pre-conflict norms and values of the citizenry and make reconciliation difficult across groups in the aftermath of the conflict. To tackle these problems, post-conflict peacebuilding should be well designed so that it can widely cover and sufficiently deal with conflict-affected citizens. This approach urges us to pay serious attention to the individual-level impact of the conflict process and dynamics. The importance of micro-level analysis does not disregard that of normative and/or macro-level approaches to the development of peacebuilding policies. However, the micro-level approach is better able to capture wartime civil-military relations that largely vary between individuals. The book is aimed at linking academic knowledge with policy development in peacebuilding. To reflect existing policy frameworks in peacebuilding, the implications of micro-evidence-based studies for conflict-affected societies are discussed here. A bottom-up approach pursued throughout this book allows us to elaborate desirable policy schemes for peacebuilding that conform to local contexts.

Reconstruction of Macroeconomics: Methods of Statistical Physics, and Keynes' Principle of Effective Demand - Hiroshi Yoshikawa - Bog - Springer

This book explains how standard micro-founded macroeconomics is misguided and proposes an alternative method based on statistical physics. The Great Recession following the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers in September 2015 amply demonstrated that mainstream micro-founded macroeconomics was in trouble. The new approach advanced in this book reasonably explains important macro-problems such as employment, business cycles, growth, and inflation/deflation. The key concept is demand failures, which modern micro-founded macroeconomics has ignored. “It (Chapter 3) captures analytically a good part of the intuition that underlies the Keynesian economics of people like Tobin and me.”Robert Solow, Emeritus Institute Professor of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Nobel Laureate in Economics, 1987“Professor Hiroshi Yoshikawa provides a unique synthesis of statistical physics and macro-economic theory in order to confront the dismal failure in economics and in finance to understand how an economy or a financial market works, given the heterogeneous decision making of many different individual interacting actors. Economics has failed in this regard with the naive and often misleading concept of “representative agents.” The author presents many insights on the historical development, concepts, and errors made by the most illustrious economists in the past. This book should be essential readings for any economics students as well as academic researchers and policy makers, who should learn to bring back good-sense thinking in their impactful decisions.”Didier Sornette, Professor on the Chair of Entrepreneurial Risks at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich)

Ice Microfluidics - Arinori Inagawa - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

This book explores the possibility of using micro/nanostructures formed on the doped ice surface as a novel separation platform. In addition, it provides comprehensive information on the nature of freeze-concentrated solutions (FCSs) and the ice/FCS interface, which play important roles in the natural environment and industrial processes alike. The book proposes a novel size-selective separation approach using channels formed on the doped ice surface. The separation is based on the physical interaction of analytes with channel walls, which is controlled by varying the channel width through temperature and dopant concentration changes. It also shows the precise control of the channel width to be in a range of 200 nm-4 μm and demonstrates the size-selective separation of microspheres, cells, and DNA. The physicochemical properties of FCSs are measured to reveal the nature of the ice/FCS interface, and the zeta potentials of ice are measured by determining EOF rates in a microchannel fabricated in the ice. The deprotonation at OH dangling bonds and adsorption of ions are also discussed. The viscosities of FCSs confined in micro/nanospaces are evaluated by means of two spectroscopic methods. When an FCS is confined in small spaces surrounded by ice, the viscosity increases compared to that in a bulk solution. Interestingly, this viscosity enhancement occurs even though its size is on the micrometer scale. These parameters are essential to discussing the unique phenomena occurring in FCSs. This book provides an explanation of the scientific processes taking place in FCSs, and reveals the potential that frozen solutions hold as innovative micro/nanofluidic devices and reaction platforms.

Sustainable Development of Rural Household Economy - Qinghua Shi - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

Sustainable Development of Rural Household Economy - Qinghua Shi - Bog - Springer Verlag, Singapore - Plusbog.dk

This book focuses on the transition of hundreds of rural households in ten villages in Zhejiang from 1986 to 2002, based on the theme of rural household sustainable development. Drawing on a large amount of first-hand data collected from fixed observation sites for 17 consecutive years, this book has depicted the changes in household behaviour in rural Zhejiang, and analysed the origins of such changes. The contents of the book contain examinations at household and village level. Chapters One to Seven describe the changes in rural behaviour at the household level from different aspects, such as land transfer, saving and borrowing, and rural tax burden. Chapters Eight to Ten analyse the transition concerning household behaviour based on the village level data. This book will help readers with a better understanding of rural China from the micro perspective of household behaviour. This book won the Monograph Award (ranked 1st out of 6 winners in total) in the Third China Rural Development Research Award (2008). It was also awarded the Second Class Excellent Research Achievement in Humanities and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education (2009). With the help of rich and detailed first-hand data collected from fixed observation sites in ten villages in Zhejiang for 17 consecutive years, this book gives a panoramic analysis of Chinese rural society in transition from the viewpoint of rural household behaviour. It starts the examination from individual rural households, before develops the investigation to the whole villages, so that the study could be carried out in a coherent, reliable and systematic way. Viewing the countryside from its micro perspective under the national political economy framework, the book steps out of the traditional way of inspecting exclusively the rural households and therefore is able to generalise its conclusion at a macro level. The award selection panel in 2008 believed it a unique monography for understanding the macro transition of the Chinese "agriculture, countryside and peasant (三农)" issues from the micro aspect of household behaviour.
