The volume "Rare Earth Elements" C 11 deals with the compounds and systems of the rare earth elements with boron, Le., borides, borates, and associated alkali double compounds. As in all earlier volumes of "Rare Earth Elements" Se ries C ("Seltenerdelemente" Reihe Cl, comparative data are presented in sections preceding treatment of the individual compounds and systems. Topics of the present volume C 11 aare the comparative data on the borides and the indi­ vidual sections on the systems and borides containing Sc, Y, and La. The individual sections for the systems and borides with Ce to Lu can be found in the following volume C 11 b together with the borates, their alkali double compounds, and other compounds containing Ce to Lu, boron and elements related by the Gmelin system. The most extensively studied borides treated in the comparative sections are of the type MB. These rare earth hexaborides are refractory compounds and so me of them, especially e LaBe, are good thermionic emissive materials or exhibit other interesting physical properties.

This third volume of the Supplement Series supplying the Main Volumes of the series "Perfluorohalogenoorgano Compounds of Main Group Elements", Part 1 to 9, completes the treatment of the compounds of the Main Group VI elements. It covers sulfur(IV) compounds, sulfonic acids, sulfonic anhydrides, and sulfonates, sulfur(VI) oxides, sulfonyl nitrogen compounds, sulfonyl halides, sulfur(VI) halides, and the compounds of selenium and tellurium. It also includes the perfluorohalogenoorgano compounds of iodine in oxidation states higher than one and contains a formula index for the Supplement Volumes 1, 2, and 3. The Supplement Series will be concluded by the description of the nitrogen compounds. Concept, organization, and selection as to the coverage of the material are the same as in the Main Volumes. Title compounds are newly synthesized ones as well as those compounds already referred to in the Main Volumes and for which new facts have been published. Conventions as to the presentation of the data are given in the prefaces of the Main Volumes. In contrast to the convention for NMR chemical shifts used previously, chemical shifts downfield from the standard are designated as positive, according to the recommendations of the IUPAC Commission on Molecular Structure and Spectroscopy (Pure and Applied Chemistry 29 [1972]625/8, 45 [1976] 217/9). This volume comprises the compounds of thorium with the 4th main group elements silicon and germanium and all 5th main group elements except nitrogen. On the subject of ternary and polynary compounds containing oxygen, only those compounds with phosphorus are included (e.g., phosphates, hypophosphates, or phosphinates). Similar compounds of the other ele­ ments like silicates, arsenates, etc. were already treated in "Thorium" Suppl. Vol. C 2, 1976. Most of the compounds in the different systems treated in this volume are of scientific interest because of their special physical and chemical properties. On the other hand, there are also many compounds wh ich are of specific technological interest, mainly in the nuclear field. Refractory compounds like ThSi or ThP have potential interest as nuclear fuel for special reactors due to their physical properties like good heat conductivity and their chemical stability, e.g., against the corrosion of cladding alloys for nuclear fuel elements. Due to the present situation in the further development of the thorium nuclear fuel cycle, their large potential has not yet been fully investigated. For most of the binary and ternary phases in these systems, we presently have good knowledge about the preparation of the compounds and their physical and chemical properties. But nevertheless, there are still a lot of open questions concerning phase equilibria, solid solutions, and homogeneity of some of the phases described in this volume.

The concept of marketing and managing relationships with customers and other interest groups is at the core of marketing today. In the academic world, the topic is covered in special issues released by numerous journals (e. g. Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science, Journal of Strategic Marketing, Psychology & Marketing), and conferences and conference sessions regularly discuss the advantages of the approach. But relationship marketing is not limited to theory. On the contrary, no service firm or business-to-business company can now do without some form of long-term orientation, and all have implemented at least some elements of the relationship market­ ing concept. Even in the consumer goods sector, there are a growing number of cases where the traditional orientation towards brand equity is being complemented by a relational focus.
