Design and Construction of an RFID-enabled Infrastructure - Nagabhushana Prabhu - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Internet 2.0 (previously called the Internet of Things) presents a tantalizing vision of bridging the cyber and physical worlds to forge a seamless planet-wide infrastructure in which cyber resources and physical objects can interact without human intervention. The technology needed to build the infrastructure already exists. However, more than a decade after the vision of Internet 2.0 was articulated, it remains largely unrealized except in isolated settings. Following a background discussion, Design and Construction of an RFID-enabled Infrastructure: the Next Avatar of the Internet addresses three questions: what are the barriers to the emergence of Internet 2.0 as a global infrastructure? What are the features that Internet 2.0 architecture must have if it is to become a successful global infrastructure? How can one build a prototype of Internet 2.0? The quest for answers to the above questions threads the narrative through the birthing process and maturation of two successful global infrastructures—the Internet and the web. Based on a review of the design philosophies underlying the Internet and the Web, their histories and the strategic stewardship that midwifed their births, the book presents the architectural guidelines for the Internet 2.0 infrastructure as well as a blueprint for the construction of its prototype. The discussion in the book is consolidated into a list of technical and strategic guidelines intended to facilitate the incubation of Internet 2.0.

Wireless and mobile communications have grown exponentially. The average individual now possesses a minimum of two smart mobile devices. The consistent advancement of mobile devices feeds the ever-growing appetite for faster bandwidth, uninterrupted connectivity, applications to fulfill the needs of consumers and businesses, and security for all of this information. Mobile Devices: Tools and Technologies provides readers at all levels of technical expertise with an understanding of mobile device concepts, application development processes, networking and infrastructure, and security methods. This book is organized into four sections, with chapters contributed by engineers with extensive real-world experience in the mobile and wireless field. The first section discusses the current mobile device landscape, including the latest technology innovations, personal and business use trends, and mobile operating systems and applications. The second section focuses on the application development process, from strategy and process through the development phases, to production and launch. This section covers both Android and iOS application development. In the third section, the authors explore mobile access standards, network types, and infrastructure components. This section also covers proximity communications standards, including Bluetooth, NFC, and RFID. The book concludes with a look at mobile device security, including mobile encryption methods, wireless security levels, and corporate security and workforce management strategies. Throughout the book, the contributors illustrate proven best practices and methodologies using real-world case studies drawn from their extensive experiences with mobile software and infrastructures for enterprise customers.

Although Lean and wireless professionals seek the same goals, few are fluent in each other’s language. Those who are have already helped their companies tap into the competitive advantages possible by integrating wireless technology into a Lean culture of continuous process improvement. Highlighting wireless as a powerful and inherently Lean tool, Thin Air: How Wireless Technology Supports Lean Initiatives proposes practices and paradigms to help you seamlessly integrate these two dynamic resources for virtually effortless process improvements. This authoritative resource discusses the application of a wide range of wireless technologies, including RFID, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), real-time location systems (RTLSs), and global positioning systems (GPS). It addresses the modernization of infrastructure, elimination of costly hardware and redundant equipment, the facilitation of e-Kanban, and the provision of real-time visibility into any operation. It also touches upon "airsourcing," the wireless cousin of outsourcing. The book contains a strong healthcare component with a case study on Mercy Medical Center that appears throughout the text. Drawing on success stories from dozens of companies, including American Apparel, the US Postal Service, Ford, Boeing, and Motorola, this complete resource also gives you access to a Lean Wireless ROI Calculator you can use to input values unique to your company’s operations and calculate estimated savings in labor and excess capacity. If you are a wireless technology provider or user, this book will help you understand how to maintain a focus on creating value. If you are a Lean practitioner, you will learn how to use wireless technology to fulfill your mission of continuous improvement.
