Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design - Kingston Heath - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Sustainable design requires that design practitioners respond to a particular set of social, cultural and environmental conditions. ''Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design'' defines a set of strategies for understanding the complexities of a regional setting. Through a series of international case studies, it examines how architects and designers have applied a variety of tactics to achieve culturally and environmentally appropriate design solutions. • Shows that architecture and design are inextricably linked to social and environmental processes, and are not just technical or aesthetic exercises. • Articulates a variety of methods to realise goals of socially responsible and environmentally responsive design. • Calls for a principled approach to design in an effort to preserve fragile environments and forge sustainable best practice. ''Vernacular Architecture and Regional Design'' will appeal to educators and professional practitioners in the fields of architecture, heritage conservation and urban design. Dr. Kingston Wm. Heath is Professor and Director of the Historic Preservation Program at the University of Oregon. Previously he was Professor of Architecture at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte where he taught seminars on vernacular architecture and regional design theory. He holds graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and Brown University. In addition to numerous articles in scholarly journals, he is the author of Patina of Place, and winner of the Abbott Lowell Cummings Award from The Vernacular Architecture Forum for excellence in a scholarly work. He has earned an international reputation in the field of vernacular architecture and has directed field schools in Italy and Croatia.

Species Sensitivity Distributions in Ecotoxicology - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Species Sensitivity Distributions in Ecotoxicology - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

In spite of the growing importance of Species Sensitivity Distribution models (SSDs) in ecological risk assessments, the conceptual basis, strengths, and weaknesses of using them have not been comprehensively reviewed. This book fills that need. Written by a panel of international experts, Species Sensitivity Distributions in Ecotoxicology reviews the current SSD methods from all angles, compiling for the first time the variety of contemporary applications of SSD-based methods. Beginning with an introduction to SSDs, the chapter authors review the issues surrounding SSDs, synthesizing the positions of advocates and critics with their own analysis of each issue. Finally, they discuss the prospects for future development, paving the way for improved future uses. In sum, this book defines the field of SSD modeling and application. It reveals a lively field, with SSD-applications extending beyond legally adopted quality criteria to other applications such as Life-Cycle Analysis. For anyone developing or revising environmental criteria or standards, this book explores the pros and cons of using the SSD approach. For anyone who needs to apply and interpret SSD-based criteria or standards, the book explains the basis for the numbers, thereby making it possible to correctly apply and defend them. For anyone performing ecological risk assessments, the book covers when and how to use SSDs including alternative assumptions, data treatments, computational methods, and available resources. Species Sensitivity Distributions in Ecotoxicology provides you with a clear picture of these standard models for estimating ecological risks from laboratory toxicity data.

Prostitution in the Community - Sarah Kingston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Prostitution in the Community - Sarah Kingston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Prostitution often causes significant anxiety for communities. These communities have been known to campaign against its presence in ‘their’ neighbourhoods, seeking the removal of street sex workers and their male clients. Although research and literature has begun to explore prostitution from the standpoint of the community, there is no comprehensive text which brings together some of the current literature in this area. This book aspires to cast light on some of this work by exploring the nature, extent and visibility of prostitution in residential communities and business areas, considering the legal and social context in which it is situated, and the community responses of those who live and work in areas of sex work. This book aims to examine current literature on the impacts of prostitution in residential areas and considers how different policy approaches employed by the police and local authorities have mediated and shaped the nature of sex work in different communities. It explores what communities think about prostitution and those involved, as well as studies the techniques and strategies communities have utilized to take action against prostitution in their neighbourhoods. This book will also demonstrate the diversity of public attitudes, action and reaction to prostitution in the community. This book is a useful contribution for academics and researchers in the fields of Criminology and Sociology who wish to understand current policy initiatives surrounding the issue of prostitution in local, national and international community settings.

Women Who Buy Sex - Sarah Kingston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Women Who Buy Sex - Sarah Kingston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Drawing on empirical data from women who pay for sexual services and those who provide services to women, this ground-breaking study is the first of its kind in the UK, detailing the experiences of women who pay for sex in an explicit, direct, prearranged way. Unlike previous research on clients, which has predominantly focused on men who buy sex or women who engage in romance tourism in places such as the Caribbean, this innovative research offers new and original insights into the demand side of commercial sex. Too often, it is assumed that only men pay for sex from women or other men. Women are assumed to be service providers and are unimaginable as clients. This book therefore offers a radical departure from existing scholarship on commercial sex. In addition, the book examines the experiences of couples who pay for commercial sex, a client group that has received scant investigation. The book explores women’s reasons for their engagement in commercial sex services, their backgrounds and characteristics, their strategies for remaining safe and managing potential risks, as well as their sexual health strategies. The nature of sexual service bookings with women clients is also examined, exploring the types of services women seek, the places where bookings occur and the fess they pay. Finally, the experiences of men, women and trans sex workers who provide sexual services to women are examined. By drawing on our unique data and comparing it to the literature on men clients, we present our theory ‘Converging Sexualities’. We argue that commercial sex is a site of behavioural convergence and that women clients are behaving in ways that could be described as masculine or feminine. Our study therefore offers new ways to understand sexuality. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of sexuality, sex work and women’s behaviour.

The Entrepreneurial Personality - Elizabeth (kingston University Chell - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Entrepreneurial Personality - Elizabeth (kingston University Chell - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Is there such a thing as an ''entrepreneurial personality''? What makes someone an entrepreneur is a question that has intrigued the lay person and the scholar for many years, but can such a personality be identified or is it simply a socially constructed phenomenon? Elizabeth Chell pursues an alternative line of argument: to show that the entrepreneurial personality is, on the one hand, socially constructed, but on the other hand, presents consistency in behaviours, skills and competencies. This second edition of the highly acclaimed The Entrepreneurial Personality revisits the topic and updates the evidence from a multi-disciplinary perspective. The book carefully weaves together the arguments and views from economists, sociologists and psychologists in order to develop a strong conceptual foundation. It discusses the inferences that these experts have made about the nature of entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial process, and explores whether such evidence has enabled psychometricians to develop robust instruments for assessing the characteristics of entrepreneurs. The evidence for a range of purported traits is reviewed and the models and research designs of interested social scientists are explained and evaluated. Throughout, Chell laces her argument richly with a set of cases derived from primary and secondary sources. This book presents a timely set of views on the entrepreneurial personality, and will be of great interest to academics in the fields of entrepreneurship, economics, management, applied psychology and sociology. This accessible text will also appeal to the interested general reader, as well as practitioners and consultants dealing with entrepreneurs in the field.

English, French & German Comparative Law - Raymond (kingston University Youngs - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This comparative analysis considers the differing approaches to important areas of law in England, France and Germany. In particular, constitutions, sources of law, rights against the state to prevent abuse of power, and rights of private individuals and organisations against each other in tort and contract are examined and compared, and the system of courts is also considered. Updated and revised, each sub-topic is introduced with the relevant material in the English system, allowing easy comparison and assimilation of the other systems. The text includes translations of relevant French and German codal material, and references to relevant cases from all of the jurisdictions. This new edition includes constitutional changes in France and the United Kingdom, in particular the new procedure for challenging existing legislation before the Conseil constitutionnel . It examines the consequences of the Lisbon Treaty, as well as other recent codal and legislative changes. Comprehensive and topical, the text explores a wide variety of new case law on issues such as: preventive detention; the use of evidence obtained by torture; the balance between suppression of terrorism and personal freedom; the internet; email monitoring; artificial reproductive techniques; use of global positioning systems (GPSs), deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and closed-circuit television (CCTV); the wearing of religious clothing (such as the headscarf) and symbols (such as the cross); circumcision; methods of crowd control; the prevention of human trafficking; the preservation of privacy, especially for celebrities; and the legality of pre-nuptial agreements and success fees for lawyers. Designed for students on comparative law courses, this textbook will also prove valuable to students who are familiar with English law, but require a readily comprehensible introduction to French or German law.

The Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Well-being (SSTEW) Scale - Denise Kingston - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The SSTEW Scale helps all those working with children aged two to six to achieve their full potential and enjoy the benefits and pleasure of delivering high quality early education and care. The Quality Rating Scale (QRS) is a tool to uplift process quality in Early Childhood Education and Care and it is known to be predictive of child development. Using it to support quality improvement in a setting or class will result in enhancing children’s learning and development. Designed to measure and promote practice that supports children and adults engaging in sustained shared thinking (SST) and emotional well-being (EW), it facilitates the development of strong relationships, effective communication, self-regulation and concept development. It looks at the quality of interactions that occur between the adults and the children and between the children themselves. It also considers the responsiveness of the adults to the children and how they intentionally support children’s play, learning and development. It can be used by practitioners at all levels, helping them to take a systematic approach to self-assessment so that they can build on what they do well and improve where they need to. It is also an essential resource for measurement by researchers and those engaged in auditing settings. This new edition includes updated information about the evidence-base for SSTEW and children’s development and learning as well as new examples of practice and supplementary information accompanying the indicators. In addition, there is a stronger focus on formative assessment and new additions to the assessment section. Online or face to face training can be set up via the authors’ dedicated website https://birthtosevenmatters.co.uk/
