Pinus Mugo Pumilio Swiss Mountain Pine Dwarf Mountain Pine

Pinus Mugo Pumilio Swiss Mountain Pine Dwarf Mountain Pine

Pinus Mugo Pumilio is also known as the Swiss Mountain Pine or Dwarf Mountain Pine Pumilio Group. This is a low-growing, slow-growing spreading coniferous evergreen shrub. The needles are long and mid-green and give a bushy appearance to the plant. Mature plants produce attractive brown cones. Pinus Mugo Pumilio is the most commonly used of the low growing pines as it has a very bushy appearance and is slightly faster growing than other varieties. A member of the Pumilio Group of the family Pinaceae Family, the Genus Pinus can occur as low-growing shrubs or large evergreen trees, some with quite attractive bark. The Genus characteristically develops an irregular outline once established. Leaves are long and needle-like in bundles of 2,3, or 5 typically. The cones may fall or sometimes remain on a given tree for years, depending on the variety. The Pumilio Group is known for its low, spreading, bushy growth which will form small shrubs with needles about 4 centimetres in length. Their cones are attractive, small, ovid in shape, and brown in colour. They first originated at 1500-2500 metres in the Alps and were first introduced to the UK in the 1950s.Pinus Mugo Pumilio Group can be considered a hardy evergreen withstanding temperatures as low as -40OC. They are also tolerant of coastal winds and do well in either an exposed or sheltered placement.Pinus Mugo Pumilio or Dwarf Mountain Pine prefers full sun with aspects by priority from South to North to West to East facing. They also prefer well drained soils, across the full spectrum of texture composition from loam, chalk, clay, or sand. A near neutral or slightly acidic pH will yield the best results with this shrub. They are slow growers, achieving ultimate height of 2.5-4.0 metres and a spread of approximately 4-8 metres over the course of their 50+ years to full maturity.Suggested garden locations and uses are many. Pinus Mugo Pumilio complements a large rock garden or a Japanese garden well. Use them to create a favourable dimension as a flower garden’s border.  They can persist and do well in Coastal Gardens and create an interesting, low shrub addition to any informal garden. They can even be grown in containers, as a bushy ground cover, topiary, urban gardens, as a specimen, or in a woodland garden location.Swiss Mountain Pine will attract Songbirds and capture a pleasant visual attraction. They are resistant to Deer, can tolerate drought, are not prone to many diseases, and are very low maintenance.  They do, however, respond nicely to some degree of shaping. These pines are suitable for windy and coastal areas - other plants for windy or exposed areas include chamaerops humilis palms.

Pinus Sylvestris Standard Trees. Scots Pine Trees Clear Stem

Pinus Sylvestris Standard Trees. Scots Pine Trees Clear Stem

The Scots Pine or Pinus Sylvestris is one of the most-planted conifers in the world and is also an excellent choice as an accent tree. These are Pinus Sylvestris standard trees. Native to the British Isles, by the 1700’s forests of Pinus Sylvestris were found only in the northern mountains of Scotland, hence its common name. It is the UK’s only native cone-bearing tree. Its upper trunk and branches develop an orange-brown, flaking bark. The needles, up to 7 cm in length, are grey-green. All Scots Pine trees bear both male and female small yellow flowers in spring, developing cones 5 cm long, which take 2 years to mature from green to brown. Hardy in even the most severe northern European climates, Pinus Sylvestris will grow to a mature height of more than 12 metres and spread of 8 metres in 20 to 50 years if left to their own devices. They can grow almost a metre in height every year before reaching their mature size, and then live for 250-300 years. Plant your Pinus Sylvestris Standard Tree in full sun in any well-drained soil, in an exposed or sheltered position. It is important to select a spot where its heavy needle drop will not be a problem. Tolerant of pollution, it is a good choice for city plantings but is salt and wind-resistant, so does well in coastal locations. It is not favoured by deer so is good for planting on country properties. A single Pinus Sylvestris, or a group of several, planted in the middle of a large lawn in a row will form an impressive focal point. In a woodland or wildlife garden, a Scots Pine will create shade for under-storey trees and shrubs, and provide valuable shelter for wildlife. Pinus Sylvestris is starting to extend its range farther south to reclaim areas in which it once thrived, and this native conifer is a worthwhile addition to any UK landscape. You may also be interested in our more topiary Pinus Sylvestris trees including Pinus Sylvestris Cloud Tree, Pinus Sylvestris Topiary Dome and the Pinus Sylvestris Watereri Topiary Lollipop.

Pinus Nigra Green Rocket. Black Pine Green Rocket Conifer

Pinus Nigra Green Rocket or Black Pine Green RocketPinus Nigra Green Rocket, a new variety of Black Pine, is best known for its lovely vivid dark green needles and elegant columnar habit. Fairly compact even when mature, this cultivar can be used for hedging, both in small and large gardens. Pinus Nigra or the Black Pine family originates from the mountains of Southern Europe, North West Africa and Turkey. The Pinus Nigra family earned its name because of its dark brown, almost black bark, and Black Pine Green Rocket shares that trait with its close relatives. This particular cultivar has a narrow, upright habit that is ideal for hedges and sophisticated borders. The needles are a lovely shade of dark green, long, arranged in pairs. Foliage is stiff and upright with a conspicuous, large bud borne atop it. The russet coloured buds mature to attractive light brown cones.Robust and undemanding, Black Pine Green Rocket variety will grow in any soil, including sand and clay. For best performance in the garden, this striking conifer should be planted in a well-drained, nutrient-rich soil in full sun. It tolerates both exposed and sheltered locations. However, snow can distort its columnar shape, so in case this cultivar is grown in an exposed spot, tie the branches with a rope to prevent damage from snow heaps.Thriving even in the severest European climates, Pinus Nigra Green Rocket is fully hardy in the United Kingdom. This conifer is resistant to frost, strong and harsh winds, as well as urban pollution, making it a great choice for coastal and city gardens alike. With an average growth rate, Black Pine Green Rocket will reach a height of 2 metres with a width of only 50 centimetres, in a period of 10 years. Extremely easy to maintain in great form, this conifer requires no pruning to stay in shape. Routine removal of dead or damaged branches will ensure that the cultivar remains healthy.Although it is slow gorwing, Pinus Nigra Green Rocket can be used for hedging, where its dense, evergreen foliage provides privacy and serves as a windbreak. Considering it is fairly compact, this conifer can be used in containers, planted in pairs as a front door plant or to add colour and texture to balconies, patios or roof terraces.Make sure to take a look at other Pinus Nigra varieties we have for sale, including Pinus Nigra Green Tower which is a fastigiate variety, fast growing Pinus Nigra Austriaca and the dwarf varieties Pinus Nigra Pierrick Bregeon and Pinus Nigra Nana.
