Salix Caprea Kilmarnock or Kilmarnock Weeping WillowDuring the 19th century, the first Kilmarnock willow tree was discovered on the banks of the Ayr. Thomas Lang of Kilmarnock was so taken with it that he started to propagate it. By 1853 Salix Caprea Kilmarnock was introduced into commerce and became widely available for purchase by gardeners. Salix Caprea Kilmarnock is a small dwarf deciduous tree. Its diminutive size makes it ideal for any garden. It grows to a height of 2.5 meters with a compact width of 2.5 meters. It is relatively slow growing and generally takes between ten to twenty years to attain its full height. It has a Royal Horticulture Society badge declaring it perfect as a pollinator. A Kilmarnock Willow is the perfect weeping willow for small gardens.The weeping, pendulous branches of the Kilmarnock weeping willow are bare during the spring months except for furry golden catkins that create visual interest and contrast to the landscape. The catkin-laden branches are ideal for creating floral bouquets or drying for crafts. As summer approaches, the soft green leaves start to emerge on the branches. When autumn arrives, the foliage turns a bright golden hue. Plant the Kilmarnock willow in a location in the garden where it will receive full sun for optimum growth. However, it will tolerate partial shade but its growth may be significantly slowed in such a location. It prefers well-draining soil that is moderately fertile. Like most willow varieties, it will withstand waterlogged roots and brief periods of flooding. Plant it in clay, loam, or sandy soil conditions.
