Cash, Clothes, and Construction - Kate Maclean - Bog - University of Minnesota Press - Plusbog.dk

A groundbreaking feminist perspective on Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) rule in Bolivia and the country’s radical transformation under Evo Morales The presidency of Evo Morales in Bolivia (2006–2019) has produced considerable academic scholarship, much of it focused on indigenous social movements or extractivism, and often triumphalist about the successes of Morales’s Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). Turning a new lens on the movement, Cash, Clothes, and Construction presents the first gender-based analysis of “pluri-economy,” a central pillar of Bolivia’s program under Morales, evaluating the potential of this vision of “an economy where all economies fit” to embrace feminist critiques of capitalism and economic diversity. Based on more than twelve years of empirical research exploring the remarkable transformations in Bolivia since 2006, this book focuses on three sectors-finance, clothing, and construction-in which indigenous women have defied gendered expectations. Kate Maclean presents detailed case studies of women selling secondhand high street clothes from the United States in the vast, peri-urban markets of Bolivian cities; Aymaran designers of new pollera (traditional Andean dress) fashions, one of whom exhibited her collection in New York City; and the powerful and rich chola paceÑa, whose real estate investments have transformed the cultural maps of La Paz and El Alto. Cash, Clothes, and Construction offers a gendered analysis of the mission of MAS to dismantle neoliberalism and decolonize politics and economy from the perspective of the Indigenous women who have radically transformed Bolivia’s economy from the ground up.

Principles of Evolution - Jonathan (university Of Oxford Bard - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Principles of Evolution - Jonathan (university Of Oxford Bard - Bog - Taylor & Francis Inc - Plusbog.dk

Principles of Evolution covers all aspects of the subject. Following an introductory section that provides necessary background, it has chapters on the evidence for evolution that cover the fossil record, DNA-sequence homologies, and protein homologies (evo-devo). It also includes a full history of life from the first universal common ancestor, through the rise of the eukaryote and on to the major groups of phyla. This section is followed by one on the mechanism of evolution with chapters on variation, selection and speciation. The main part of the book ends with a chapter on human evolution and this is followed by appendices that expand on the making of fossils, the history of the subject and creationism. What marks this book as different from others on evolution is its systems-biology perspective. This new area focuses on the role of protein networks and on multi-level complexity, and is used in three contexts. First, most biological activity is driven by such networks and this has direct implications for understanding evo-devo and for seeing how variation is initiated, mainly during embryogenesis. Second, it provides the natural language for discussing phylogenetics. Third, evolutionary change involves events at levels ranging from the genome to the ecosystem and systems biology provides a context for integrating material of this complexity. The book assumes a basic grounding in biology but little mathematics as the difficult subject of evolutionary population genetics is mainly covered qualitatively, with major results being discussed and used rather than derived. Principles of Evolution will be an interesting and thought-provoking text for undergraduates and graduates across the biological sciences.

The Evolution of Infectious Agents in Relation to Sex, Volume 1230 - - Bog - John Wiley and Sons Ltd - Plusbog.dk

This volume explores the evolution of infectious agents that are sexually-transmitted or transmissible in humans and animals. This subject has received little attention until recently, in spite of historical records of sexually transmitted diseases over many centuries before Darwin’s second opus emphasizing the importance of sex in reproductive fitness. A growing number of agents are being identified that assume the sexual route of transmission. This volume explores the increased appreciation of evolutionary interactions with development (EVO-DEVO), the possible epigenetic mechanisms involved in both, and the recognition of the importance of evolution in human and veterinary medicine and public health. Also discussed are the rapid advances in technological methodologies that can provide important detailed molecular characterization of sexually-associated viruses, bacteria, yeasts, protozoa, and ectoparasites. These are helping to date the likely zoonotic and co-evolutionary origins of the human- or animal-related agents and their initial, or later, radiation to the host’s genital econiche. The rapid replication of these agents results in many acute and often chronic diseases – although, as in the case of the gamete-transmitted endogenous retroviral genes, some may prove to have EVO-DEVO benefits. This volume takes an interdisciplinary approach to the exchange of newer evolutionary perspectives and technological advances to expand the understanding of the commonality and diversity of these animal and human infectious agents. Hox Modules in Evolution and Development - - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

Few, if any, genes have had the same level of impact on the field of evolutionary-developmental biology (evo-devo) as the Hox genes. These genes are renowned for their roles in patterning the body plans and development of the animal kingdom. This is complemented by the distinctive organisation of these genes in the genome, with them frequently being found as clusters in which gene position is linked to when and where the individual genes are expressed, particularly during embryogenesis. This book provides the latest overviews of Hox gene organisation and function for major clades of animals from across the animal kingdom. With the rapidly increasing availability of high-quality whole genome sequences from an ever-expanding range of species, it is becoming increasingly evident that there is great diversity in the organisation of Hox genes. These great strides in genome sequencing are wedded to important developments in our ability to detect expression and disrupt gene function in species that are not traditionally genetically-amenable animals. These technical developments are integrated with wide taxon-sampling in this volume to provide new perspectives on the roles of Hox genes in understanding fundamental issues such as embryo patterning, mechanisms of gene regulation, homology, evolvability, evolutionary novelties, phylogeny, the role of gene and genome duplications in evolution, and ancestral states for major clades of animals. Key features - - Integrative overviews from major animal groups including, arthropods, vertebrates, echinoderms, mollusks and other spiralians. - - - Perspectives gleaned from the latest genome sequence and gene expression data. - - - Individual chapters written by world-leading experts in Hox genes and evo-devo in each animal group. - Related Titles Scholtz, G., ed.
