Tourette''s syndrome (TS) is an inheritable, childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder characterised by the presence of motor and phonic tics. Despite decades of extensive studies, the exact disease aetiology remains poorly understood. It is believed that susceptibility to TS is determined by the interactions of multiple genetic loci with unknown environmental factors. As a result, a great deal of research has been focused on identifying TS susceptibility genes. Thus far, at least 12 susceptibility loci have been suggested by genome-wide screenings, but none of them has been replicated probably due to genetic heterogeneity. Candidate gene approach has also suggested evidence for several genes relevant to neuronal signalling such as dopamine receptor and serotonin receptor. This book discusses the current state of genetic studies in TS susceptibility.

On the guest list were such renowned names as Anton Cepka, Hermann Junger and Bruno Martinazzi - artists celebrated today as the founders of studio jewellery. The jewellery pieces that developed at that time have remained in the Muzeum skla a bizuterie in Jablonec nad Nisou and to this day have lost nothing of their exceptional and pioneering aura. This publication - which contains a reprint of the original catalogue from 1968 - makes these pieces accessible to a wider audience for the very first time. A document that in a wholly authentic way allows the reader to experience this unique historical moment in the history of the international studio jewellery scene. Text in English and German. The issue of differences between translational language and native-speaker language has become a topic of increasing interest in linguistics and Translation Studies (TS). One of the primary tasks in this research area is to employ a corpus approach and analyse collocations with authentic language data by comparing comparable corpora consisting of translated and native-speaker texts. Collocation in linguistics and TS refers to the relationship of co-occurrence between lexical items. The book shows that examining the use of collocations constitutes an integral part in assessing the naturalness of second language (L2) use, and therefore can be a valid measure to make a distinction between translational language and native-speaker language. Nevertheless, the role of collocation has not been given enough attention or discussed systematically in TS and, to date, there are hardly any translation theorists who have clarified the mechanism of collocation in TS, by which translators acquire receptive and productive knowledge of collocations in their L2. In addition, previous research in this area is largely confined to Indo-European languages, resulting in a lack of empirical evidence involving Asian languages. This book therefore attempts to bridge the gap in the literature and constitute an integral part in the research area.

This is a long overdue examination of a poet whose career offers a case study in the complexities facing Soviet writers in the Stalin era. Ol''ga Berggol''ts (1910-1975) was a prominent Russian Soviet poet, whose accounts of heroism in wartime Leningrad brought her fame. This volume addresses her position as a writer whose Party loyalties were frequently in conflict with the demands of artistic and personal integrity.Writers who pursued their careers under the restrictions of the Stalin era have been categorized as ''official'' figures whose work is assumed to be drab, inept, and opportunistic; but such assumptions impose a uniformity on the work of Soviet writers that the censors and the Writers Union could not achieve. An exploration of Berggol''ts''s work shows that the borders between ''official'' and ''unofficial'' literature were in fact permeable and shifting. This book draws on unpublished sources such as diaries and notebooks to reveal the range and scope of her work, and to show how conflict and ambiguity functioned as a creative structuring principle. Dr Hodgson discusses how Berggol''ts''s lyric poetry constructs the subject from multiple, conflicting discourses, and examines the poet''s treatment of genres such as narrative verse, verse tragedy, and prose in the changing cultural context of the 1950s. Berggol''ts''s use of inter-textual, and especially intra-textual, reference is also investigated; the intensively self-referential nature of her work creates a web of allusion which connects texts of different genres, ''official'' as well as ''unofficial'' writing.This study will provoke readers into reassessing the cultural heritage of an era that can seem remote and impenetrable, but which (like Ol''ga Berggol''ts) was far more complex and intriguing.

This book offers an introduction for Translation Studies (TS) scholars to Critical Translation Studies (CTS), a cultural-studies approach to the study of translation spearheaded by Sakai Naoki and Lydia H. Liu, with an implicit focus on translation as a social practice shaped by power relations in society. The central claim in CTS is that translators help condition what TS scholars take to be the primal scene of translation: two languages, two language communities, with the translator as mediator. According to Sakai, intralingual translation is primal: we are all foreigners to each other, making every address to another "heterolingual", thus a form of translation; and it is the order that these acts of translation bring to communication that begins to generate the "two separate languages" scenario. CTS is dedicated to the historicization of the social relations that create that scenario. In three sets of "Critical Theses on Translation," the book outlines and explains (and partly critiques) the CTS approach; in five interspersed chapters, the book delves more deeply into CTS, with an eye to making it do work that will be useful to TS scholars.

Reaction models are important for many engineering tasks, such as the optimization of internal combustion engines or production lines in the chemical industry. The automated reaction space exploration method ChemTraYzer attempts to alleviate the often time-consuming reaction model development process. ChemTraYzer uses reactive Molecular Dynamics (rMD) simulations to find the underlying reactions of the reaction process. Coupling the rMD output to quantum-mechanical reoptimizations of reactant, product and transition state (TS) geometries and to transition state theory, allows ChemTraYzer to produce kinetic and thermochemical data with the low uncertainties,which are required for many reaction model applications. In this thesis, I address two major issues of the ChemTraYzer method. First, I introduce two acceleration techniques for the rMD simulations, the pressure-accelerated Dynamics (pAD) and ChemTraYzer-Temperature-Accelerated Dynamics (ChemTraYzer-TAD) methods, to extend the applicability of rMD to reaction processes that occur on longer time scales than the nanosecond. The acceleration techniques are designed to work with minimal a-priori knowledge of the reaction systems, as they are meant for the exploration of unknown reaction space. With the pAD method, I describe a methodology to choose elevated simulation pressure and temperature to speed up the occurrence of reaction events without simulating a biased reaction network. ChemTraYzer-TAD is a progression of the pAD method. ChemTraYzer-TAD allows for higher simulation temperatures than pAD and allows for high boost factors of 108 as demonstrated in our ChemTraYzer-TAD case study. Both methods are applied to case studies of low-temperature ignition reaction processes. Second, I improve the performance of the automatic TS searches, which are a bottleneck in the ChemTraYzer methodology, by introducing a recovery method for failed TS searches. Our new recovery method improves the overall TS search success rate by up to 10 percentage points to a total of 48%. Finally, I demonstrate the practical usability of ChemTraYzer for automated reaction space exploration using case studies of chlorinated dibenzofurane formation and decomposition processes.
