''The perfect spin to a fantasy fairy tale'' - New York Times bestseller Chloe Gong ''Has all the fantasy, beauty, dragons, and intrigue of Game of Thrones '' - New York Times bestseller Delilah S. Dawson ''Block off an entire day - you''re not going to want to put Damsel down'' - New York Times bestseller Beth Revis A price must be paid... Elodie never dreamed of a lavish palace or a handsome prince. Growing up in the famine-stricken realm of Inophe, her deepest wish was to help her people survive each winter. So when a representative from a rich, reclusive kingdom offers her family enough wealth to save Inophe in exchange for Elodie''s hand in marriage, she accepts without hesitation. Swept away to the glistening kingdom of Aurea, Elodie is quickly taken in by the beauty of the realm - and of her betrothed, Prince Henry. But as Elodie undertakes the rituals to become an Aurean princess, doubts prick at her mind as cracks in the kingdom''s perfect veneer begin to show: a young woman who appears and vanishes from the castle tower, a parade of torches weaving through the mountains, markings left behind in a mysterious "V". Too late, she discovers that Aurea''s prosperity has been purchased at a heavy cost - each harvest season, the kingdom sacrifices its princesses to a bloodthirsty dragon. And Elodie is next. This ancient arrangement has persisted for centuries, leading hundreds of women to their deaths. But the women who came before Elodie did not go quietly. Their blood pulses with power and memory, and their experiences hold the key to Elodie''s survival. Forced to fight for her life, this damsel must use her wits to defeat a dragon, uncover Aurea''s past, and save not only herself, but the future of her new kingdom.

Caxton's Golden Legend - - Bog - Oxford University Press - Plusbog.dk

This is volume I of the first scholarly edition of the Golden Legend, the largest and most elaborate production of the first printer in English, William Caxton. It is an English translation of Jacobus de Voragine''s Legenda aurea (ca. 1267), a collection of legends for the feasts of saints (the Sanctorale) and other major days of the liturgical year (the Temporale). The Legenda aurea was one of the most popular and influential books in the later medieval Western world; it circulated widely, and was repeatedly translated into many vernacular languages. This volume reproduces Caxton''s original text of the Temporale with modern punctuation and capitalization, notes on content, syntax and lexis, a detailed glossary, and an index of proper names. Caxton''s complex combination of sources is given particular attention: the principal one was a little-known reworking of the French translation made by Jean de Vignay, but he also used the Latin original and a previous English translation, the Gilte Legende, and made some personal additions. The Introduction considers the structure of the entire book that Caxton created, but focuses on the Temporale and the set of Old Testament legends that will follow in volume 2. It discusses their sources and language, highlighting the differences between the first two volumes and the notable number of new words and senses. It also gives a detailed bibliographic account of this printing in its historical context and descriptions of all surviving copies.

Conundrum - Puzzles in the Grotesques Tapestry Series - Charissa Bremer David - Bog - Getty Trust Publications - Plusbog.dk

The whimsical imagery of four tapestries in the permanent collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum and currently on display at the Getty Center is perplexing. Created in France at the Beauvais manufactory between 1690 and 1730, these charming hangings, unlike most French tapestries of the period, appear to be purely decorative, with no narrative thread, no theological moral, and no allegorical symbolism. They belong to a series called the Grotesques, inspired by ancient frescos discovered during the excavation of the Roman emperor Nero's Domus Aurea, or Golden House, but the origins of their mysterious subject matter have long eluded art historians. Based on seven years of research, Conundrum: Puzzles in the Grotesques Tapestry Series reveals for the first time that the artist responsible for these designs, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699), actually incorporated dozens of motifs and vignettes from a surprising range of sources: antique statuary, Renaissance prints, Mannerist tapestry, and Baroque art, as well as contemporary seventeenth century urban festivals, court spectacle, and theater. Conundrum illustrates the most interesting of these sources alongside full-color details and overall views of the four tapestries. The book's informative and engaging essay identifies and decodes the tapestries' intriguing visual puzzles, enlightening our understanding and appreciation of the series' unexpectedly rich intellectual underpinnings.

The Alchemical Mercurius - Mathew (limerick Institute Of Technology Mather - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The Alchemical Mercurius - Mathew (limerick Institute Of Technology Mather - Bog - Taylor & Francis Ltd - Plusbog.dk

The figure of the alchemical Mercurius features ubiquitously and radically in Jung’s later works, but despite this, there has been little research concerning Mercurius in Jungian studies to date. In this book, Mathew Mather explores the figure of the alchemical Mercurius and contextualises and clarifies its significance in Jung’s life and works. Placing the alchemical Mercurius as a central concern reveals a Jungian interpretation in which the grail legend, alchemy and precessional astrology, as three thematic threads, converge. In such a treatment, Jung’s belief in the dawning of a new platonic month emerges as a central consideration and an esoteric perspective on Jung’s life and works is brought more fully to light, constructing a life-myth interpretation. The book is comprised of three parts: - - Aurea Catena: locating the figure of the alchemical Mercurius within the Western esoteric tradition - - - Daimonic Encounter: the relevance of this figure in Jung’s personal life - - - Magnum Opus: Jung’s portrayal of this figure in key texts such as Synchronicity , Aion , Mysterium Coniunctionis; and Emma Jung and von Franz’s The Grail Legend . - The Alchemical Mercurius is a unique contribution to analytical psychology, substantially revealing ‘esoteric Jung’ and providing valuable perspectives on the theme of his myth for our times. The book will appeal to researchers and academics in the field of analytical psychology as well as postgraduate students.

The Martiloge in Englysshe - - Bog - Henry Bradshaw Society - Plusbog.dk

The Martiloge in Englysshe - - Bog - Henry Bradshaw Society - Plusbog.dk

The text is a translation done into English for use in the Brigittine monastery of Syon by the priest Richard Whitford [fl. 1495-1555?], the "wretche of Syon", as he often signed himself, a well known translator and compiler of devotional texts in the vernacular. It was printed by de Worde {STC 17532] "for the edifacacyon of certayn religyous persones vnlerned, that dayly dyd rede the same martiloge in latyn, not vnderstandynge what they redde". The English text follows in essence the text represented by the Latin Syon martyrology, London, British Library, Adiditional MS 22285, but from a different, more correct copy which contained additional entries. Additional MS 22285, was devised for the male Brigittine community, but was conserved in exile by the female community until 1809, when it was sold to the Earl of Shrewsbury. The "additions" mentioned are not liturgical in character, but are somewhat careless gleanings form Jacobo de Voragine's 'Legenda Aurea', Petrus de Natalibus, 'Catalogus Sanctoreum', and a work 'Sanctilogium Salvatoris', all employed so as to furnish a devotional rather than a liturgical text in the vernacular, The reference to Salisbury {Sarum] in the title of the printed volume is explained by the fact that Syon was founded in 1415, the year after the London diocese [in which the monastery was situated] adopted the Sarum Use, and that the Brigittine custom was to follow the local use, It would seem doubtful that a uniform Sarum martyology ever really existed. In this edition readings are collated from the Latin martyrology to be found in a Sarum breviary in London, British Library, Harley MS 2785. On a broader view, the Syon martyorology followed a rather corrupt text of Usuard with numerous variations and interpolations.

Commentary on the Gospel of John Bks. 6-12 - Thomas Aquinas - Bog - The Catholic University of America Press - Plusbog.dk

Commentary on the Gospel of John Bks. 6-12 - Thomas Aquinas - Bog - The Catholic University of America Press - Plusbog.dk

Thomas Aquinas possessed excellent knowledge of the commentaries of Origen, John Chrysostom, and Augustine. On the basis of this foundation, he produced his own commentary on the Gospel of John as part of his task as a Master of the Sacred Page. Considered a landmark theological introduction to the Fourth Gospel, these lectures were delivered to Dominican friars when Aquinas was at the height of his theological powers, when he was also composing the Summa theologiae. For numerous reasons, the Summa has received far more attention over the centuries than has his Commentary on the Gospel of John. However, scholars today recognize Aquinas's biblical commentaries as central sources for understanding his theological vision and for appreciating the scope of his Summa theologiae. The first English translation of Aquinas's Commentary on the Gospel of John by Fabian Larcher and James Weisheipl, originally published nearly two decades ago and long out of print, is available to scholars and students once again with this edition. Published in three volumes simultaneously, it includes a new introduction and notes pointing readers to the links between Aquinas's biblical commentary and his Summa theologiae. When a verse from the Gospel of John is directly quoted in the Summa theologiae, the editors note this in the Commentary. Aquinas's patristic sources, including Origen and Augustine, are carefully identified and referenced to the Patriologia Latina and Patrologia Graeca. The Commentary's connections with Aquinas's Catena Aurea are also identified. ""While the most significant aspect of the publication is Aquinas's text itself, the introduction and notes provide excellent aides to the reader and enrich the text. Daniel Keating and Matthew Levering contribute a clear and helpful introduction to the translation, providing brief but very useful explanatory notes about early writers and controversies.""--David M. Gallagher. The three volumes in the Commentary on the Gospel of John will be sold individually and as a set.
