Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd U. White Cedar Smaragd. Thuja Smaragd Hedging. White Cedar Emerald Hedging. Thuja Hedging Conifers

Thuja Smaragd White Cedar Hedging Rootball.Thuja Smaragd or White Cedar Emerald. These plants are supplied as Root Ball plants.Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd is a most attractive variety of Thuja. Growing more slowly (width-wise) than other varieties of Thuja, Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd has an upright conical habit and produces erect sprays of charming bright green foliage even in winter. The foliage is aromatic.Over recent years, Thuja conifers are becoming increasingly acknowledged as excellent hedging conifers that are well suited to our climate here in Britain and Ireland. They are evergreen, fast-growing, naturally conical shaped trees with small, fragrant leaves. The variety Thuja Occidentalis Smaragd has many common names including White Cedar Smaragd or White Cedar Emerald. It can also be referred to as Thuja Occidentalis Emerald.  As the name suggests, its foliage has a beautiful, emerald hue (smaragd meaning emerald in German).Thuja Smaragd trees have a dense growing habit and aromatic green foliage. The foliage lends itself very well to trimming, where required. Grown as a stand-alone specimen tree or pair of trees, Smaragd is a narrow, shapely and elegant conifer with its beautiful conical shape. White Cedar Smaragd is an ideal conifer for hedging. If you are looking for instant impact in your garden or landscape, the more mature Thuja Smaragd trees standing at 2.75 metres tall are excellent value!  There are many advantages to having a Thuja Occidentalis Emerald hedge. Smaragd is colour resistant in winter, meaning that it retains its colour during the winter months and is not susceptible to browning of the needles.  Relatively little cutting & shaping is required. Thuja Smaragd is particularly dense and columnar. Its narrow stature means that unlike most other hedging plants, it needs relatively little pruning, even over many years. This is because Thuja Smaragd grows slowly width-wise. In height on the other hand, White Cedar Emerald has a normal growth rate. Perfect characteristics for hedging!  Thuja Smaragd grows well in full sun on rich soil that drains well. Fully hardy. Max height in 20 years 3-4 metres. For many seasoned gardeners, Thuja 'Smaragd' is often considered the most beautiful and most recommendable of the Thuja varieties. But as it is slower growing, it tends to be more expensive than its related Thuja Occidentalis Brabant or Thuja Plicata Martin.  We aim to have a size in stock for every budget. As these hedging plants are root balled, we are able to offer even better value.

Thuja Plicata Hedging. Western Red Cedar Hedge Buy UK

Thuja Plicata Hedging. Western Red Cedar Hedge Buy UK

Thuja Plicata Martin is also known as the Western Red Cedar.  Thuja is part of the cypress family and is known as a fast-growing evergreen conifer tree. Our Thuja Plicata Hedging plants are supplied as root balled (e.g. without a pot). The roots are protected and wrapped in a biodegradable hessian sack. As a result, we can offer these evergreen hedging conifers at an excellent price for our customers. Height At MaturityThuya Plicata 'Martin' is a particular variety of Thuja which is a mid-size variety that will reach  6-7 meters in height at maturity. This variety retains a slender shape with a diameter up to 2 meters wide. This aspect is particularly useful for hedging purposes where lateral space is usually limited. The evergreen foliage of Thuja Plicata Martin is a dense, mid green in colour, which becomes tinged with an attractive bronze during the winter months.  Privacy ScreeningThuja Plicata Martin is a very popular choice for privacy screening hedging, partly due to its ability to renew itself after trimming or cutting back. Other varieties of fast growing hedging, for example Cupressus Leylandii, can develop dead foliage at their centre (especially when they are not regularly trimmed) which won’t renew itself easily. Thuja Plicata conversely, will regrow happily after being cut back and still remain a lovely verdant green hedge.Hardy, Easy To Grow, Low MaintenanceThuja Plicata or Western Red Cedar (named for its red bark) is native to Pacific North America and grows well in the UK climate - easy to grow and with low maintenance. A trim at the beginning of the Spring to keep in shape is usually enough to last the year. If necessary, give another trim in autumn (don't leave it too late in the year for the last cut). Although a fast growing hedge it doesn't need as much managing as Leylandii. Thuja Plicata Martin has unusually fragrant foliage, when you brush past the trees or when you trim the leaves, there is a lovely scent of pineapple from the bright green foliage.  A very attractive and practical hedge plant 'Martin' is also an impressive specimen tree for small to medium sized gardens.Another excellent variety of Thuja (sometimes spelled Thuya) that is especially useful for hedging, is Thuja Occidentalis Brabant.

Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata Japanese Plum Yew

Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata Japanese Plum Yew

Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata, also known as the Japanese Plum Yew, is an excellent landscaping specimen. Its columnar habit and attractive evergreen foliage make it particularly versatile in a variety of garden situations. Native to Japan, China and Korea, Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata is a slow-growing evergreen yew which is a reliable foliage shrub year-round. Stems are produced from the base, reaching upward and maintaining a narrow shape. Its long, narrow, pointed leaves, up to 4 cm in length, are dark green. Female plants will produce small, olive green edible fruits up to 2.5 cm long in the autumn.  Hardy in most parts of the UK, Japanese Plum Yew will reach a height of 1.5 metres and spread of 1.2 metres in a period of 10 years. After 20 to 50 years it may reach 3.5 metres in height with a 1.5 metres spread. It can be pruned to maintain a smaller size if desired. Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata prefers a part-shade sheltered location, with moist but well-drained sandy soil, although it will tolerate loam or clay as well. It can be planted in full sun in cool, moist conditions and will also tolerate full shade. Once established they will withstand dry periods. Avoid an east-facing aspect as the new growth is frost-tender in early spring.  Tolerant of urban pollution and coastal salt, as well as deer resistant, it is suitable for a wide variety of planting locations. Both attractive and versatile, Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata is equally at home as a specimen plant or in a mass planting in a hedge or clump, depending on the size of your garden. Its slow growth and small size, as well as year-round attractive foliage, make it a good choice for a sheltered spot in a rooftop terrace or courtyard, or by a front door or walkway, where its columnar habit will keep it from interfering with foot traffic. In a larger garden, a hedge of Japanese Plum Yew will create a year-round privacy screen, in addition to providing an attractive foliage show. In a country setting, a grouping of Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata will be a dramatic focal point in the landscape. At the back of a mixed border, the dark green foliage of one or more Japanese Plum Yew plants will be a an excellent background plant for a variety of flowering plants through the season. The distinctive evergreen foliage and upright growth habit of Cephalotaxus Harringtonia Fastigiata make it a great choice for gardens large or small!

Taxus Bacatta Fastigiata Aurea Golden Irish Yew Evergreen

Taxus Bacatta Fastigiata Aurea Golden Irish Yew Evergreen

Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea is more commonly known as Golden Irish Yew.  This is a fully hardy, narrow columnar evergreen with beautiful yellow and green coloured foliage. Densely compact, this slow growing golden conifer has an upright habit and conical shape which adds interest to the garden all year round. This conifer has a beautiful architectural shape with a vertical accent. The dark green leaves have variegated golden patches. It prefers sun or partial shade. Aurea is the golden or variegated relative of Taxus Baccata Fastigiata, the green Irish Yew. Both have a similar growth habit, but the foliage colour differentiates the two. Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea has embellished our gardens since the 1750s. Also referred to Taxus Baccata Hibernica, it was discovered accidentally in County Fermanagh back in 1750 & through the centuries has graced many a church garden & graveyard. With its glorious golden colour and narrow vertical shape, these architectural qualities have long endeared it to British gardeners. It is a slow-growing, compact and evergreen yew that brings shape and colour to the garden while taking up surprisingly little horizontal space, particularly while younger. In essence, an ornamental tree that makes an excellent focal point in any garden, small or large, due to its, dense, vertical growth habit and superb foliage colour. When it comes to the soil, Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea is not fussy. This evergreen conifer will thrive in any well-drained soil. Golden Irish Yew is highly tolerant of urban pollution as well, so it is suitable for urban gardens. Robust and versatile, this ornamental conifer can survive temperatures up to -20 degrees. Golden Irish Yew is fully hardy in all of the UK, and its exceptional constitution and great performance in most gardens earned this cultivar the coveted Award of Garden Merit by Horticultural Society.Generally considered a low-maintenance plant, Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea does not require routine pruning to stay in perfect form. If you want to shape this conifer, a light trim will be more than enough, as its natural upright, conical habit already makes Golden Irish Yew ideal for hedges and borders. Long-lived and with a slow growth rate, Golden Irish Yew can grow to be up to 4 metres tall and up to 2 metres wide. However, it takes up to 20 years for this spectacular plant to achieve its ultimate size. Grown for its attractive yellow-green foliage and beautiful columnar shape, Taxus Baccata Fastigiata Aurea looks as stunning when planted en masse as when it is planted alongside other varieties of yew such as its dark green cousin Irish Yew. Golden Irish Yew also works well as evergreen hedging.

Irish Yew Trees - tall upright conifers for Hedging and Evergreen Screening with rich dark green foliage.

Irish Yew Trees - tall upright conifers for Hedging and Evergreen Screening with rich dark green foliage.

Irish Yew is a narrowly columnar evergreen conifer with narrow dark green leaves. It is often used for hedging purposes as it makes a very neat, lovely dense coloured hedging. However, its columnar shape makes it a good choice as a specimen tree when you need a punctuating element in the garden. Irish Yew grows neatly and even without trimming will produce a lovely slim columnar shape. While the English Yew needs no introduction to most of us. We use it for hedging, evergreen screening and as a stand-alone ornamental tree. But what of origins of the Irish Yew? In the 1750s in a County Fermanagh estate, two seedlings were discovered by accident and promptly cultivated. It is likely that most of the Irish Yews on the planet emanate from these two seedlings. The Irish Yew is characterised by its more upright and narrow growth habit (hence the Latin ‘fastigiata’ addition to its name). It demands less space than the spreading English Yew. Interestingly, most Irish Yews are female and carry bright red fruits in autumn, adding to the attraction. Care should be taken when positioning as although birds can eat these berries they are toxic to humans. Taxus Baccata Fastigiata also produces cones.Relatively slow growing, over time Taxus Baccata Fastigiata will reach a maximum height of circa 10 metres. Max Spread 6m.Irish Yew is accommodating and will grow in full sun or partial shade and is very hardy. When planting, back-fill with soil mixed with peat substitute and a suitable fertiliser.
