Shasta Daisies are easy to grow and require minimal care. They prefer a sunny or partially shaded spot in a rich, moist, well-drained soil. Good drainage is very important, so add some sand or grit if you have particularly wet soil. Keep well watered during the summer months until established, allowing the soil to dry slightly between each watering. Apply a general purpose fertiliser in the spring, after the plants have begun to grow. Then, apply again every month or two throughout the season. Remove dead flowers to prolong flowering and in winter cut the flower stems back to the base of the plant. You can also divide and separate established plants. Separate them every three or four years, and they will reward you with bigger blooms. If you do not do this then the plants will begin to crowd each other out, competing for nutrients. As a result, both the plants and the blooms will be smaller.

Achillea are easy to grow and will do well in a sunny position in most well-drained soils, but will not tolerate waterlogged conditions. Once planted and before the plant has made too much growth add a bamboo cane to support. Water at least once a week during summer months until established, but keep watering in winter to a minimum. Once established Achillea are fairly drought tolerant. Remove spent flowers during the season to encourage more to grow. After flowering is complete, and autumn turns to winter, Achillea should be cut back to ground level preferably before the plants go completely dormant and the old flower spikes turn brown. They can be lifted and divided every three to five years, which will revitalise the original clump and give you new plants to grow elsewhere.

Delphiniums need to be in the sun for at least half of the day, so choose a spot in the garden accordingly. Soil must be fertile and free draining; If your soil is poor then dig in plenty of new compost or organic matter to enrich it. Water plants well to establish and maintain a regular watering and feeding schedule throughout the months that the plant is growing. Flower spikes may need to be tied to a stake to stop them from blowing over and getting damaged. Remove dead flowers and once the plant has finished its 1st flush of flowering in Late May / Early June, chop the plant back by half to encourage a second flush later in the summer. This is often called the ‘Chelsea Chop’, as plants tend to be nearing the end of their 1st flush around the time of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Echinacea are low maintenance plants provided you give them a sunny spot and a well-drained soil, these perennials don’t like wet feet in the winter. The best flower colour occurs in a sunny position. During the first year keep the soil moist, but once established they are fairly drought tolerant. If you see leaves wilting or drooping, dry or cracked soil, or dry leaves that turn yellow, you should water your plant right away. If you see any of the characteristics just mentioned, be sure to give your plant a good watering, and then pay close attention to it for the next few weeks to be sure it is getting the moisture that it needs. In general, keep Echinacea on a lean diet, just fertilising once in the spring with an organic fertiliser. Remove faded flowers to prolong flowering. Cut down to soil level after they stop blooming or after a frost. Alternatively, you can leave the seed heads as they are over the winter. This can help promote self-seeding.
