The Firm and Territory An Organizational Perspective

The Firm and Territory An Organizational Perspective

This book investigates the relationship between the firm and the territory emphasizing the micro-organizational dimension and the interactions between actors at territorial levels. First the book examines the particular features of the firm considering three key factors - structural design power configuration and organizational culture – and the characteristics of the surrounding territory as a specific spatial ecosystem with its own institutions agents history and objectives. Second it analyses organizational tenets at the micro- and meso levels with a view to explaining various relational models and their implications at the level of the firm and the territory. Although previous studies have focused on the territory as a geographical space in which firms procure resources and promote development this book presents an innovative approach and makes a key contribution to the literature by dealing with the firm and the territory from an organizational perspective. The relationship is analysed as bidirectional: a key question concerns how the territory can impact the organizational dimension of the firm and how the firm can characterize the territory. This will be considered in connection with various effects. The positive effects of the relationship with the territory are investigated in terms of territorial identity territorial resilience and territorial sustainability. The negative effects include the role of criminal networks rooted in the territory with firms acting as key agents. | The Firm and Territory An Organizational Perspective

Tax and Benefit Policies in the Enlarged Europe Assessing the Impact with Microsimulation Models

Tax and Benefit Policies in the Enlarged Europe Assessing the Impact with Microsimulation Models

This book offers the first systematic assessment of income redistribution in Eastern Europe within a comparative European perspective and it demonstrates the future research potential of microsimulation techniques in this region. The book's chapters are based on a unique instrument - EUROMOD: the European tax-benefit microsimulation model which has been enlarged to include Estonia Hungary Poland Slovenia and other countries. Tax-benefit models such as EUROMOD are computer programmes based on household micro-data which calculate each household's disposable income. Microsimulation can be used to evaluate the impact of current taxes and benefit policies on individuals' incomes and work incentives. In addition the model is designed to answer 'what if' questions about different policy reforms allowing the potential effects of proposed changes to be studied before their actual implementation. EUROMOD goes one step further in the process of helping policy design in allowing international comparisons between EU countries. This book offers an important demonstration of the effectiveness of tax-benefit models in presenting complex information in a concise and comprehensible way. It discusses what the barriers to their adoption to date have been and it looks at the possibilities EUROMOD offers to future policy-making in Europe. | Tax and Benefit Policies in the Enlarged Europe Assessing the Impact with Microsimulation Models

Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Using a Role Theory lens this book investigates Tamil diaspora mass movements and interest groups as marginalised forces of domestic foreign policy influence. Until now Role Theory has not considered diaspora mass movements as collective action actors nor looked at how marginalised diasporas influence elite foreign policy decision-making. Matthew K. Godwin employs a comparative micro-level decision-making narrative that looks incisively at decisions faced by the British and Canadian governments in 2009 and 2013 towards the Sri Lankan civil war and its aftermath. Through qualitative elite-level interviews and content analysis of other primary source data Godwin convincingly argues that when diaspora interest group elites are leveraging the power of mass movements in concert with credible partisan advocates they can influence role contestation. However international institutional constraints on role behaviour may stymie their preferred role performance especially if states are indispensable to the institutions their behaviour may unravel. Ultimately Godwin concludes that some states can't behave badly even when they want to. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of lnternational Relations Foreign Policy Analysis Comparative Politics Migration Studies and to non-government organisations who seek to influence governments. | Disaggregating Diasporas as a Force in Role Contestation Mobilising the Marginalised in Foreign Affairs

Ageing Austerity and Neoliberalism Lived Experiences of Older People in a De-Industrialised Town

Ageing Austerity and Neoliberalism Lived Experiences of Older People in a De-Industrialised Town

This book explores how neoliberalism and austerity have affected older people living within a deindustrialised town utilising a Foucauldian approach and an ethnographic methodology. It seeks to bridge the gap between high sociological theory and a research focus upon older people. The link between the micro (real people within a real place) and macro (abstract processes) is examined and a mid-range theory of change is innovatively developed to highlight how older people are having to negotiate national transformations at the everyday level. Key themes within this book include the recreation of human subjectivity antiwelfarism the stigmatisation and exclusion of the poor the fragmentation of the working class and nostalgia. Innovative terms such as ‘stigma-adaptation’ and ‘abnormal abnormality’ are included to help deepen our knowledge and understanding of the social sciences to highlight the injustices caused by current global processes and to ultimately inform change. This book will be of interest to scholars and students across the social sciences particularly those studying inequalities in the modern world neoliberalism and the economy social theory ageing and older people and community studies and postgraduates who are seeking to undertake applied research. It would also be valuable for policymakers and service providers. | Ageing Austerity and Neoliberalism Lived Experiences of Older People in a De-Industrialised Town
