Agnes's Jacket A Psychologist's Search for the Meanings of Madness.Revised and Updated with a New Epilogue by the Author

In a Victorian-era German asylum seamstress Agnes Richter painstakingly stitched a mysterious autobiographical text into every inch of the jacket she created from her institutional uniform. Despite every attempt to silence them hundreds of other psychiatric patients have managed to get their stories out or to publish them on their own. Today in a vibrant network of peer-advocacy groups all over the world those with firsthand experience of emotional distress are working together to unravel the mysteries of madness and to help one another recover. Agnes’s Jacket tells their story focusing especially on the Hearing Voices Network (HVN) an international collaboration of professionals people with lived experience and their families and friends who have been working to develop an alternative approach to coping with voices visions and other extreme states that is empowering and useful and does not start from the assumption that such people have a chronic illness. A vast gulf exists between the way medicine explains psychiatric conditions and the experiences of those who suffer. Hornstein’s work helps us to bridge that gulf guiding us through the inner lives of those diagnosed with schizophrenia bipolar illness depression and paranoia and emerging with nothing less than a new model for understanding one another and ourselves. | Agnes's Jacket A Psychologist's Search for the Meanings of Madness. Carefully crafted interventions can change attitudes and behavior. Yet attitudes beliefs and behavior are often formed and changed in casual social exchanges. The mere perception that other people favor something say rich people may be sufficient to make another person favor it. People’s own actions also influence their attitudes such that they adjust to be more supportive of the actions. People’s belief systems even change to align with and support their preferences which at its extreme is a form of denial for which people lack awareness. These two volumes provide authoritative critical surveys of theory and research about attitudes beliefs persuasion and behavior from key authors in these areas. The first volume covers theoretical notions about attitudes the beliefs and behaviors to which they are linked and the degree to which they are held outside of awareness. It also discusses motivational and cultural determinants of attitudes influences of attitudes on behavior and communication and persuasion. The second volume covers applications to measurement behavior prediction and interventions in the areas of cancer HIV substance use diet and exercise as well as in politics intergroup relations aggression migrations advertising accounting education and the environment. | The Handbook of Attitudes Volume 1: Basic Principles 2nd Edition

Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Questions about religions and religious institutions have changed dramatically since they first arose many years ago. In the beginning of the twenty-first century the link of religion with extreme ideologies captures our attention. Such questions have been the focus of a steadily growing number of books. What does Assertive Religion add to the debate?Emanuel de Kadt discusses the relationship of religion to wider social issues such as human rights and multiculturalism. He traces the growth during the religious revival over the past decades of assertive and even coercive forms of religion notably but not exclusively fundamentalist varieties. He deals with these questions as they relate to the three major Abrahamic religions thereby addressing a readership wider than that made up of persons interested exclusively in Judaism Christianity or Islam. The author takes on issues such as the effects of the Jewishness of Israel on the rights of Palestinians; the consequences of the centralized authority structure of the Roman Catholic Church; and the implications of the failure of reform-oriented Muslims to make their voices heard in an organized Islamic reform movement. He is even-handed focusing on both positive and negative features of each religious perspective though he does have a clear viewpoint. Assertive Religion adds to increasingly sharp political discussions on issues arising out of religion. It is a must read for anyone interested in how religion is shaping the world of tomorrow. | Assertive Religion Religious Intolerance in a Multicultural World

Adaptive Leadership in a Global Economy Perspectives for Application and Scholarship

With the entire world experiencing the global pandemic and its aftermath VUCA (Volatile Uncertain Complex and Ambiguous) conditions have never been more extreme and the need for adaptive leadership never more urgent. Water Security and U.S. Foreign Policy

Water Security and U.S. Foreign Policy

The prosperity and national security of the United States depend directly on the prosperity and stability of both partner and competing countries around the world. Today U. S. interests are under rising pressure from water scarcity extreme weather events and water-driven ecological change in key geographies of strategic interest to the U. S. Those water-driven stresses are undermining economic productivity weakening governance systems and fraying social cohesion in scores of countries and in the process undermining the vitality of rural livelihoods fostering local and ethnic conflicts driving broad migratory movements and contributing to the growth of insurgencies and terrorist networks. While the U. S. intelligence community has steadily expanded natural resource concerns in their global threat analyses our overseas development assistance remains locked into provision of water and hygienic services rather than responding to the full sweep of global water challenges including governance and policy failures growing conflicts over water and the need for promoting sustainable transboundary water arrangements in partner countries. A fundamental departure from the past is urgently needed. Based on 18 case studies Water Security and U. S. Foreign Policy provides an analytical framework to help policy makers scholars and researchers studying the intersection of U. S. foreign policy with the environment and sustainability issues interpret the impacts of water-driven social disruptions on the stability of partner governments and U. S. interests abroad. The book also delivers specific recommendations to reorient U. S. development and diplomatic engagements that can forestall and prevent social disruptions and ensuing threats to U. S. prosperity and national security.

Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia Past Present Future

Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia Past Present Future

The social position of learning disabled people has shifted rapidly over the last 20 years from long-stay institutions first into community homes and day centres and now to a currently emerging goal of ordinary lives for individuals using person-centred support and personal budgets. These approaches promise to replace a century and a half of scientific pathological models based on expert assessment and of the accompanying segregated social administration which determined how and where people led their lives and who they were. This innovative volume explains how concepts of learning disability intellectual disability and autism first came about describes their more recent evolution in the formal disciplines of psychology and shows the direct relevance of this historical knowledge to present and future policy practice and research. Goodey argues that learning disability is not a historically stable category and different people are considered learning disabled as it changes over time. Using psychological and anthropological theory he identifies the deeper lying pathology as inclusion phobia in which the tendency of human societies to establish an in-group and to assign out-groups reaches an extreme point. Thus the disability we call intellectual is a concept essential only to an era in which to be human is essentially to be deemed intelligent autonomous and capable of rational choice. Interweaving the author's historical scholarship with his practice-based experience in the field Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia challenges myths about the past as well as about present-day concepts exposing both the historical continuities and the radical discontinuities in thinking about learning disability. | Learning Disability and Inclusion Phobia Past Present Future

Ancient Sacred Sites in the Gulf of Naples The Sanctuary of Athena at Punta Campanella

Ancient Sacred Sites in the Gulf of Naples The Sanctuary of Athena at Punta Campanella

The geographical position between the gulfs of Naples and Salerno made pre-Roman Sorrento a fundamental point of passage. Around the inhabited centre sacred sites or scattered settlements developed including the sanctuary of Athena on the extreme tip of the peninsula near Punta Campanella. This book explores the historical development of the sanctuary from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD. Drawing on partly unpublished archaeological documentation and literary sources the book provides useful elements for understanding the site and its relationship with the surrounding area. Sorrento and the Greek presence in the Gulf of Naples are linked to the sanctuary installation perhaps first dedicated to the Sirens but surely after to Athena. Judging from literary sources it was one of the best-known places of worship in ancient Italy. It was only in the 1980s that the discovery of an Oscan inscription with a dedication to Minerva made it possible to hypothesise the presence of a sanctuary near the Medieval tower at Punta Campanella. The analysis of the archaeological documentation known until now the study of the new archaeological plans and the material culture (ceramics) from the site make it possible to better understand the development and the importance of the sanctuary. This book therefore defines the historical and territorial development of the sanctuary of Athena reconstructing the history of the territory of ancient Surrentum and above all its most important sanctuary. The book will be of particular interest to archaeologists ancient historians and historians of religion. | Ancient Sacred Sites in the Gulf of Naples The Sanctuary of Athena at Punta Campanella

Unmasking Administrative Evil

Unmasking Administrative Evil

The relationship between evil and public affairs as well as other fields and professions in public life has come to the fore as institutions of government seek new ways to operate in an environment of extreme mistrust. Unmasking Administrative Evil 5th Edition argues that the tendency toward administrative evil as manifested in acts of dehumanization and genocide is deeply woven into the identity of public affairs. Indeed ordinary people may simply act appropriately in their organizational role—in essence just doing what those around them would agree they should be doing—and at the same time participate in what a critical and reasonable observer usually well after the fact would call evil. Even worse under conditions of moral inversion ordinary people can all too easily engage in acts of administrative evil while believing that what they are doing is not only correct but in fact good. This 5th edition offers important updates including: A thorough discussion of contemporary virtue ethics as the field has evolved to offer an alternative to technical/rational ethics. An all-new three-part structure (What is Administrative Evil? History and Cases and The Future of Ethics in Praetorian Times) designed to aid in course organization and instruction. All-new cases including an examination of the Flint water disaster to provide contemporary examples of how populations can be marginalized and harmed by administrative processes that are blind to their consequences until it is too late. Laying the groundwork for a more ethical and democratic public life – one that recognizes its potential for evil and avoids state-sponsored dehumanization and destruction – Unmasking Administrative Evil 5th Edition is required reading for all students of administrative ethics and public service ethics as well those in other administrative sciences.
