Elements of Architecture Assembling archaeology atmosphere and the performance of building spaces

Elements of Architecture Assembling archaeology atmosphere and the performance of building spaces

Elements of Architecture explores new ways of engaging architecture in archaeology. It conceives of architecture both as the physical evidence of past societies and as existing beyond the physical environment considering how people in the past have not just dwelled in buildings but have existed within them. The book engages with the meeting point between these two perspectives. For although archaeologists must deal with the presence and absence of physicality as a discipline which studies humans through things to understand humans they must also address the performances as well as temporal and affective impacts of these material remains. The contributions in this volume investigate the way time performance and movement both physically and emotionally are central aspects of understanding architectural assemblages. It is a book about the constellations of people places and things that emerge and dissolve as affective mobile performative and temporal engagements. This volume juxtaposes archaeological research with perspectives from anthropology architecture cultural geography and philosophy in order to explore the kaleidoscopic intersections of elements coming together in architecture. Documenting the ephemeral relational and emotional meeting points with a category of material objects that have defined much research into what it means to be human Elements of Architecture elucidates and expands upon a crucial body of evidence which allows us to explore the lives and interactions of past societies. | Elements of Architecture Assembling archaeology atmosphere and the performance of building spaces

The Practice of Family Therapy Key Elements Across Models

The Practice of Family Therapy Key Elements Across Models

Now in its fifth edition The Practice of Family Therapy comes at a time when traditional approaches to psychotherapy have given way to multidimensional strategies that best serve the needs of diverse groups who are grappling with the many challenges unique to family therapy practice. With expanded coverage of different models along with new developments in evidence-based and postmodern practices this integrative textbook bridges the gap between science and systemic/relational approaches as it guides the reader through each stage of family therapy. Part I lays the groundwork by introducing the first- second- and third-generation models of family therapy teaching the reader to integrate different elements from these models into a systemic structure of practice. Part II explores the practical application of these models including scripts for specific interventions and rich case examples that highlight how to effectively work with diverse client populations. Students will learn how to make connections between individual symptoms and cutting-edge family practices to respond successfully to cases of substance abuse trauma grief depression suicide risk violence LGBTQ families and severely mentally ill clients and their families. Also included are study guides for each model and a glossary to review main concepts. Aligned with the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards’ (AMFTRB) knowledge and content statements this textbook will be key reading for graduate students who are preparing for the national licensing exam in marriage and family therapy. | The Practice of Family Therapy Key Elements Across Models

Primitive Elements of Grammatical Theory Papers by Jean-Roger Vergnaud and His Collaborators

Primitive Elements of Grammatical Theory Papers by Jean-Roger Vergnaud and His Collaborators

This book is a compilation of manuscripts and publications from 2001-2010 by Jean-Roger Vergnaud in collaboration with colleagues and students. This work is guided by the scientific belief that broader mathematical principles should guide linguistic inquiry as they guide classical biology and physics. From this Vergnaud’s hypotheses take the representation of the computational component of language to a more abstract level: one that derives constituent structure. He treats linguistic features as primitives and argues that a 2 x n matrix allows for multiple discrete dimensions to represent symmetries in linguistic features and to derive the fabric of syntax (and perhaps of phonology as well). Three primary research questions guide the core of these papers. (A) Methodologically how can broadly defined mathematical/cognitive principles guide linguistic investigation? (B) To what extent do general mathematical principles apply across linguistic domains? What principles guide computation at different levels of linguistic structure (phonology metrical structure syntax)? (C) How is the computational domain defined? In these manuscripts Vergnaud’s goal is not to radically depart from the Minimalist Program within generative grammar but rather to take the underlying goal of the generative program and bring it to an even more general scientific level. The themes of symmetry and periodicity in this book reflect his goal of scientific progress in linguistics and he has opened the doors to new exploration of old empirical problems in linguistics that may someday have deeper biological and physical explanations through the theory presented in this publication. | Primitive Elements of Grammatical Theory Papers by Jean-Roger Vergnaud and His Collaborators

Alternative Political Economy Models of Transition The Russian and East European Perspective

Alternative Political Economy Models of Transition The Russian and East European Perspective

The collapse of centrally administered socialism in Russia and Eastern Europe resulted in what is commonly referred to as the transition problem: the transformation from a centrally administered socialist economic system to one that is market-based. Economic science has been faced with the challenge of developing an appropriate body of analysis advice and direction to help other nations that may be undergoing this process. In this volume John Marangos adopts a political economy approach that yields alternative models of transition. The volume develops transition models from what Marangos defines as the primary elements of six variables: (1) economic analysis; (2) definitions of the Good Society; (3) speed of transition; (4) political structure; (5) ideological structure; and (6) initial conditions. The models developed include: the shock therapy model the neoclassical gradualist model of transition the post Keynesian model the pluralistic market the socialist model and the non-pluralistic market socialist model. After identifying the primary elements of each transition model Marangos considers the elements of each model with respect to the desirable reforms. An essential element of the transition process is not only to identify the necessary reforms but also a sequence in which the reforms should be introduced. For each transition model developed in this book a set of primary and secondary elements were provided in conjunction with a sequence of reforms. Analyzing the transition problem from a political economy perspective Marangos shows that it is possible to have inconsistencies within each transition model and between transition models yet be able to identify the potential for implementation and maintenance of necessary reforms each model recommends. This volume contributes to the understanding of the process of transition with the objective of identifying an optimal model of transition. | Alternative Political Economy Models of Transition The Russian and East European Perspective

Transcultural Architecture The Limits and Opportunities of Critical Regionalism

Transcultural Architecture The Limits and Opportunities of Critical Regionalism

Critical Regionalism is a notion which gained popularity in architectural debate as a synthesis of universal 'modern' elements and individualistic elements derived from local cultures. This book shifts the focus from Critical Regionalism towards a broader concept of 'Transcultural Architecture' and defines Critical Regionalism as a subgroup of the latter. One of the benefits that this change of perspective brings about is that a large part of the political agenda of Critical Regionalism which consists of resisting attitudes forged by typically Western experiences is 'softened' and negotiated according to premises provided by local circumstances. A further benefit is that several responses dependent on factors that initial definitions of Critical Regionalism never took into account can now be considered. At the book’s centre is an analysis of Reima and Raili Pietil¤’s Sief Palace Area project in Kuwait. Further cases of modern architecture in China Korea and Saudi Arabia show that the critique which holds that Critical Regionalism is a typical 'western' exercise is not sound in all circumstances. The book argues that there are different Critical Regionalisms and not all of them impose Western paradigms on non-Western cultures. Non-Western regionalists can also successfully participate in the Western enlightened discourse even when they do not directly and consciously act against Western models. Furthermore the book proposes that a certain 'architectural rationality' can be contained in architecture itself - not imposed by outside parameters like aesthetics comfort or even tradition but flowing out of a social game of which architecture is a part. The key concept is that of the 'form of life' as developed by Ludwig Wittgenstein whose thoughts are here linked to Critical Regionalism. Kenneth Frampton argues that Critical Regionalism offers something well beyond comfort and accommodation. What he has in mind are ethical prescripts closely linked to a | Transcultural Architecture The Limits and Opportunities of Critical Regionalism

Communication Research Methodology A Strategic Approach to Applied Research

Communication Research Methodology A Strategic Approach to Applied Research

This introduction to communication research methods takes the student from the conceptual beginnings of a research project through the design and analysis. Emphasizing the correct questions to ask and how to approach the answers authors Gary Petty Cheryl Campanella Bracken and Elizabeth Babin approach social science methods as a language to be learned requiring multiple sessions and reinforcement through practice. They explain the basics of conducting communication research facilitating students’ understanding of the operation and roles of research so that they can better critique and consume the materials in their classes and in the media. The book takes an applied methods approach introducing students to the conceptual elements of communication science and then presenting these elements in a single study throughout the text articulating the similarities and differences of individual methods along the way. The study is presented as a communication campaign involving multiple methodologies. The approach highlights how one method can build upon another and emphasizes the fact that given the nature of methodology no single study can give complete answers to our research questions. Unique features of the text: It introduces students to research methods through a conceptual approach and the authors demonstrate that the statistics are a tool of the concepts. It employs an accessible approach and casual voice to personalize the experience for the readers leading them through the various stages and steps. The presentation of a communication campaign demonstrates each method discussed in the text. This campaign includes goals and objectives that will accompany the chapters demonstrates each individual methodology and includes research questions related to the communication campaign. The tools gained herein will enable students to review use understand and critique research including the various aspects of appropriateness sophistication and utility of research they encounter. | Communication Research Methodology A Strategic Approach to Applied Research
