Citrus x Paradisi (Grapefruit) – Espalier

Citrus x Paradisi (Grapefruit) – Espalier

The Citrus x Paradisi is popularly known as the Grapefruit tree here in Britain. The grapefruit (Citrus × paradisi) is a subtropical citrus tree known for its relatively large sour to semi-sweet, somewhat bitter fruit. Grapefruit is a citrus hybrid originating in Barbados as an accidental cross between two introduced species – sweet orange (C. sinensis), and pomelo (or shaddock) (C. maxima) – both of which were introduced from Asia in the seventeenth century. When found, it was nicknamed the “forbidden fruit”. Frequently, it is misidentified as the very similar parent species, pomelo. This plant needs plenty of natural sunlight although it has a low hardiness rating of H3 making it essential to cover your plant during the winter time. Try to give this plant a once year trim and follow the guidelines of pruning group 1 for further ideas. The plant can suffer from potential pest problems although is usually disease free. Bougainvillea Glabra Sanderiana - Quarter Standard

Bougainvillea Glabra Sanderiana - Quarter Standard

This flowering plant is loved for its abundant floral display in vivid colours. The actual flowers are tiny and white, but each cluster of three flowers is surrounded by thin papery bracts in bright colours. There exist around 300 varieties of bougainvillea which come in various colours burgundy, pink, purple, red, orange, white, or yellow. It is a long lived plant which flowers seasonally and is deciduous in temperate climates though evergreen in the tropics. Although it is essentially a thorny, woody vine, it can be grown in any size and shape outdoors; covering a sunny wall, trained as a tree, bush or even a pyramid. In cooler climates it can be grown as an indoor container plant or even an indoor bonsai. We would not see this plant as a good choice for cold, wet and damp areas like Scotland. Citrus x Sinensis (Orange Trees) – Espalier

Citrus x Sinensis (Orange Trees) – Espalier

Citrus × Sinensis, also known as the Citrus Aurantium (Sweet Orange Group), includes the commonly cultivated sweet oranges, including blood oranges and navel oranges. The origin of the original plant is obscure to history but it is believed to have originated in southern Asia, particularly South China and Vietnam. The plant starts to bloom from Spring until Autumn. Producing delightfully fragrant fruit and blossom, orange trees are an interesting way of bringing rich colour to your garden. Susceptible to frost, oranges can be kept indoors during the winter months but must be situated in an area with plenty of sun. Tolerant of most soil types, they need lots of watering when the surrounding soil is dry but be careful not to over-water. Pruning can be done to encourage further growth and increased fruition. It has a low tolerance to cold weather being only a H3 on the hardiness scale, therefore it is best to keep this plant in warmer conditions the best you can. Stick to pruning group 1 for guidance on how to maintain this plant. The plant is generally disease free but be careful of potential pests.
