Story The Last Hope is the fourth major installment in the Star Ocean series . Story-wise, the production is a prequel to the first part; its action begins on Earth in 2096, 31 years after the end of World War III. The global conflict wiped out most of the planet's surface and drove humanity to the brink of extinction, forcing survivors to live in underground cities. The featured events begin shortly after the invention of the superlumination star travel drive, and the scenario tells about the crew of a ship equipped with this technology being sent on a mission to find a new home for the human race.
