Microsoft Flight Simulator is a new installment of the legendary series of civil flight simulators. The player has at his disposal mainly general aviation units such as the Cessna 172, acrobatic planes and huge passenger machines with the Boeing 747 at the helm. The authors put emphasis on realism. In relation to the FSX, not only the simulation of individual systems and aircraft flight models has been improved, but also the variability of air masses near mountains or tall buildings has been mapped. Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 also introduces such an important novelty as realistic longitudinal slope of runways and various types of surfaces. The game offers special tutorials that guide you step by step through the take-off procedures of individual planes and the subsequent stages of the flight. The degree of realism can be adjusted according to the user's experience. At lower difficulty settings, the plane can be fully controlled from the outside view, with all key flight parameters - these are displayed in the corners of the screen through a simplified interface. The simulator has also been enriched with multi-layer, volumetric clouds, and data on weather conditions is downloaded from the network on an ongoing basis. The game has an impressive graphic design. The machines have been recreated down to the smallest detail, and the locations are dripping with details thanks to the use of photogrammetry and satellite photos taken for the Bing Maps service in their creation. Such solutions have their limitations, which is usually affected by the detail of the map, which is why some of the known airports and objects were modeled by hand. The creators of Microsoft Flight Simulator were also helped in generating scenery by an artificial intelligence developed by Blackshark.ai, which allowed for terrain recognition and filling it with default objects such as trees and buildings. Huge amounts of data are downloaded on an ongoing basis from the virtual Azure cloud. The game offers support for many controllers: from a mouse and keyboard, through a gamepad, to joysticks and HOTAS sets. Reception The initial reception of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 was positive. The reviewers praised the game’s graphics, attention to detail, and gameplay mechanics. The scale of the faithfully recreated world was also noted as a positive, as was the stable of available machines. All in all, MFS 2020 is expected to continue the grand traditions of Microsoft’s series of excellent flight simulators.
