With their Ruby Cask Edition (from their Cask Series of Whiskies), The Famous Grouse have created a whisky with a delicious layer of rich fruitcake sweetness. They have taken their world reknowned (And Scotland's favourite) whisky and rested it in specially selected casks (which have been seasoned with port). The result is a whisky with a dark copper, and gold hued whisky. It has the classic smoothness of The Famous Grouse – with an soft aroma, which hints at a warming vanilla and hints of spice (cinnamon and cloves). The flavour is smooth and rich, with a mellowness. The seasoned barrels give a fruit cake flavour along with soft oak notes. It finishes as it starts, smooth with a delicious richness to it. Dubonnet Rouge In 1846, Dubonnet Rouge was the created by Sir Joseph Dubonnet (a Parisian wine merchant and chemist). At the time it quickly became a popular medicinal aperitif across the world. The brand name Dubonnet originates from the French word for dark brown - a reference to the original colour of the drink. It is made with a blend of fotified wine (using a distinct blend of grapes, Ruby Red, Ruby Cabernet and Muscat of Alexandria), herbs and spices (including blackcurrant and essence of teas), Chinchona bark (which was the original medicinal ingredient, and is perhaps better known as quinine - and gives a dry tannin note), and finally 100% cane sugar adding a degree of sweetness. Fun Fact: Dubonnet Rouge is famous in the UK as it was a favourite drink of Queen Elizabeth II and her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. Both enjoyed a cocktail of Dubonnet Rouge (2/3) and Gin (1/3), served over ice with a slice of lemon. In fact, in November 2021, Dubonnet was even awarded a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II This has a perfect balance of berry fruit sweetness which is followed by the tannin flavour of the quinine as well as its bitter aftertaste. Talisker Port Ruighe Whisky Produced on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, the Talisker distillery is the only functional single malt whisky distillery to be found there. In fact, whisky has been made there by the sea since 1830. Initially launched in 2013, Talisker's Port Ruighe (pronounced 'Port Ree') takes their classic Skye whisky and finishes it in ruby port casks. This is an homage to the Scottish traders who braved the seas and were instrumental in founding the port wine trade. This finishing process (which is a double maturation) ensures the edges are rounded - and brings a rich, berry fruity sweetness to the whisky. However the powerful maritime nature found in all Talisker whisky's is not lost, rather enhanced. With its dark, rich amber gold colour this whisky imparts an invitiving aroma from the glass. Well balanced, with a touch of sweetness joins smoke and rich plums. On the palate this is medium bodied and soft. Smoky and savoury, a spicy pepper builds into peat. Creamy smoke merges with spices and rich, dark fruits. It finishes long, leaving an intense cocoa-rich smokiness on the tongue.
