Final Fantasy IX is the ninth instalment of the cult series of jRPG games, launched in 1987 on the Nintendo console. The title was developed by Square Co. and originally it was supposed to be only a spin-off of the parent series. The setting and the story After a few parts of the series in a slightly cyberpunk atmosphere, with Final Fantasy IX, we were served to return to the roots of the series. During the game, we are again accompanied by knights, princesses and dragons. The action of the game revolves around a great war, and players take on the role of a young thief named Zidane Tribal. He joins forces with Princess Garnet and several other heroes to face Queen Brahne of Alexandria, who is responsible for the outbreak of the war. Soon, however, it turns out that Brahne is only a pawn in a much more serious game, and there is someone far more dangerous behind the whole conflict. Abilities and equipment FFIX presents a fresh perspective on the ability system. The players collect pieces of equipment which are bound to various skills and abilities, and the characters who equip them can progressively learn those techniques. Eventually, when the ability is fully mastered, the corresponding item may be unequipped, but the skill will remain – that creates the possibility of nearly limitless abilities customization.
