Social Media Analytics Strategies and Governance

Social Media Analytics Strategies and Governance

Social media has spread rapidly on the global stage driving consumers’ attention and influence both consciously and subconsciously. Whilst this type of platform may have been initially designed as a tool for open communication and expression it is also being utilized as a digital tool with widescale use cases. The intelligence explosion information overload and disinformation play a significant part regarding individual group and country perceptions. The complex nature of this data explosion created an increasing demand and use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to help provide ‘big insights’ to ‘big data’. AI and ML enable the analysis and dissemination of vast amounts of data however the ungoverned pace at which AI and autonomous systems have been deployed has created unforeseen problems. Many algorithms and AI systems have been trained on limited or unverified datasets creating inbuilt and unseen biases. Where these algorithmic tools have been deployed in high impact systems there are documented occurrences of disastrous decision making and outcomes that have negatively impacted people and communities. Little to no work had been conducted in its vulnerability and ability to exploit AI itself. So AI and autonomous systems whilst being a force for societal good could have the potential to create and exacerbate societies greatest challenges. This is a cohesive volume that addresses challenging problems and presents a range of innovative approaches and discussion. | Social Media Analytics Strategies and Governance

Manganese Removal from Groundwater Role of Biological and Physico-Chemical Autocatalytic Processes

Manganese Removal from Groundwater Role of Biological and Physico-Chemical Autocatalytic Processes

In The Netherlands Belgium and other European countries manganese is removed by conventional groundwater treatment with aeration and rapid (sand) filtration. Such a treatment process is easy to operate cost effective and sustainable because it does not make use of strong oxidants such as O3 Cl2 ClO2 and KMnO4 with the associated risk of by-product formation and over or under dosing. However application of aeration-filtration is also facing drawbacks especially the long ripening time of filter media. Due to the long ripening time water companies have to waste large volumes of treated water making this process less sustainable. Also costs associated with filter media ripening (man power electricity operational and analysis costs) are high. Therefore decreasing the filter ripening time regarding manganese removal is a big issue. Although already extended research has been carried out into manganese removal the controlling mechanisms especially of the start up face of filter media ripening are not fully understood yet. The emphasis of this thesis is to provide a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the ripening of virgin filter media regarding manganese removal and how to shorten or completely eliminate the long ripening period of filters with virgin material. This thesis therefore highlights the role of the formation of a manganese oxide coating on virgin filter media. Characterization and identification revealed that the responsible manganese oxide for an effective manganese removal was Birnessite. It was found that Birnessite formed at the beginning of the ripening process was of a biological origin. Based on the knowledge that manganese removal in conventional groundwater treatment is initiated biologically long ripening times may be reduced by creating conditions favouring the growth of manganese oxidizing bacteria e. g. by limiting the back wash frequency and / or intensity. Additionally this thesis also shows that the use of freshly prepared manganese oxide containing Birnessite can completely eliminate filter media ripening time. | Manganese Removal from Groundwater Role of Biological and Physico-Chemical Autocatalytic Processes

Polarized Light and the Mueller Matrix Approach

Polarized Light and the Mueller Matrix Approach

An Up-to-Date Compendium on the Physics and Mathematics of Polarization Phenomena Now thoroughly revised Polarized Light and the Mueller Matrix Approach cohesively integrates basic concepts of polarization phenomena from the dual viewpoints of the states of polarization of electromagnetic waves and the transformations of these states by the action of material media. Through selected examples it also illustrates actual and potential applications in materials science biology and optics technology. The book begins with the basic concepts related to two- and three-dimensional polarization states. It next describes the nondepolarizing linear transformations of the states of polarization through the Jones and Mueller-Jones approaches. The authors then discuss the forms and properties of the Jones and Mueller matrices associated with different types of nondepolarizing media address the foundations of the Mueller matrix and delve more deeply into the analysis of the physical parameters associated with Mueller matrices. The authors proceed with introducing the arbitrary decomposition and other useful parallel decompositions and compare the powerful serial decompositions of depolarizing Mueller matrices. They also analyze the general formalism and specific algebraic quantities and notions related to the concept of differential Mueller matrix. Useful approaches that provide a geometric point of view on the polarization effects exhibited by different types of media are also comprehensively described. The book concludes with a new chapter devoted to the main procedures for filtering measured Mueller matrices. Suitable for advanced graduates and more seasoned professionals this book covers the main aspects of polarized radiation and polarization effects of material media. It expertly combines physical and mathematical concepts with important approaches for representing media through equivalent systems composed of simple components.
