Stochastic Process Optimization using Aspen Plus

Stochastic Process Optimization using Aspen Plus

Stochastic Process Optimization using Aspen® PlusBookshop Category: Chemical EngineeringOptimization can be simply defined as choosing the best alternative among a set of feasible options. In all the engineering areas optimization has a wide range of applications due to the high number of decisions involved in an engineering environment. Chemical engineering and particularly process engineering is not an exception; thus stochastic methods are a good option to solve optimization problems for the complex process engineering models. In this book the combined use of the modular simulator Aspen® Plus and stochastic optimization methods codified in MATLAB is presented. Some basic concepts of optimization are first presented then strategies to use the simulator linked with the optimization algorithm are shown. Evolution The Origins and Mechanisms of Diversity

Evolution The Origins and Mechanisms of Diversity

Evolution is the single unifying principle of biology and core to everything in the life sciences. More than a century of work by scientists from across the biological spectrum has produced a detailed history of life across the phyla and explained the mechanisms by which new species form. This textbook covers both this history and the mechanisms of speciation; it also aims to provide students with the background needed to read the research literature on evolution. Students will therefore learn about cladistics molecular phylogenies the molecular-genetical basis of evolutionary change including the important role of protein networks symbionts and holobionts together with the core principles of developmental biology. The book also includes introductory appendices that provide background knowledge on for example the diversity of life today fossils the geology of Earth and the history of evolutionary thought. Key Features Summarizes the origins of life and the evolution of the eukaryotic cell and of Urbilateria the last common ancestor of invertebrates and vertebrates. Reviews the history of life across the phyla based on the fossil record and computational phylogenetics. Explains evo-devo and the generation of anatomical novelties. Illustrates the roles of small populations genetic drift mutation and selection in speciation. Documents human evolution using the fossil record and evidence of dispersal across the world leading to the emergence of modern humans. | Evolution The Origins and Mechanisms of Diversity

Practical Plant Failure Analysis A Guide to Understanding Machinery Deterioration and Improving Equipment Reliability Second Edition

This is a practical guide for those who do the work of maintaining and improving the reliability of mechanical machinery. It is for engineers and skilled trades personnel who want to understand how failures happen and how the physical causes of the great majority can be readily diagnosed in the field. It explains the four major failure mechanisms wear corrosion overload and fatigue and using easy-to-read charts how they can be diagnosed at the site of the failure. Then knowing the physical failure mechanics involved the reader can accurately solve the human causes. To improve the reader’s understanding all the diagrams and most of the tables have been redrawn. The number of actual failure examples has been increased plus the last chapter on miscellaneous machine elements includes new material on couplings universal joints and plain bearings. FeaturesA practical field guide showing how to recognize how failures occur that can be used to solve more than 85% of mechanical machinery failuresIncorporates multiple easy-to-follow logic trees to help the reader diagnose the physical causes of the failure without needing detailed laboratory analysisExplains how the mechanics corrosion materials science and tribology of components can fit together to improve machinery reliabilityIncludes more than 150 completely redrawn charts and tables plus almost 250 actual failure photographs to help guide the reader to an accurate analysisContains clear and detailed explanations of how lubricants function and the critical roles of corrosion and lubrication play in causing mechanical failures | Practical Plant Failure Analysis A Guide to Understanding Machinery Deterioration and Improving Equipment Reliability Second Edition

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

As one of the pioneers of Piezoelectric Actuators I have contributed to the commercialization of various products for over 45 years including million-selling devices micro-ultrasonic motors for smart-phone camera modules by Samsung Electromechanics piezoelectric transformers for backlight inverters by Apple laptops multilayer PZT actuators for diesel injection valves by Denso Corporation and piezoelectric energy harvesting modules for Programable Air-Burst Munition by the US Army. During the development period for piezoelectric actuators and transformers I found that the bottleneck for device miniaturization was heat generation under a high-power drive condition. Thus in parallel to the piezo-actuator developments I have been developing various high-power density piezo-ceramic materials with the loss mechanism clarification. Hence I considered that it was time to organize a textbook based on the previous studies including my materials development philosophy to stimulate younger generations to reach to the energy density of up to 100 W/cm3 in the future. Increasing efficiency and saving energy and space (compactness) are one of the important approaches in this 21st-century sustainable society. High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisims introduces the theoretical background of piezoelectrics electromechanical phenomenology loss mechanisms practical materials device designs drive and characterization techniques and typical applications and looks forward to the future perspectives in this field. This book is NOT an overall review of this area but it focuses on important and basic ideas under my development philosophy to understand how to design and develop high-power piezoelectric materials and devices. This textbook is designed for self-learning by the reader aided by the availability of: • Chapter Essentials – Summary for quick memory recovery • Check Points – Answers are provided in the Appendix • Example Problems – To enhance the reader’s understanding with full detailed solutions • Chapter Problems – For the final exam or further consideration | High-Power Piezoelectrics and Loss Mechanisms

Environmental Fluid Mechanics - Méchanique des Fluides Environnementaux

Environmental Fluid Mechanics - Méchanique des Fluides Environnementaux

Dams are planned constructed and operated to meet human needs - generation of energy irrigated agricultural production flood control public and industrial supply supply of drinking water and various other purposes. Dams impound water in reservoirs during times of high flood that can be used for human requirements during times with inadequate natural flows. Positive impacts of dams are improved flood control improved welfare resulting from new access to irrigation and drinking water. Without dams there would be insufficient food to feed the world’s people and energy would be generated by burning fossil fuels that produce greenhouse gases. Despite this progress there remain significant concerns about the environmental impacts of dams. These environmental impacts are complex and far reaching remote of the dam and may occur in time with the dam construction or later and may lead to a loss of biodiversity and of productivity of natural resources. This bulletin compiles improvements in knowledge and state of the art technology to avoid or mitigate environmental impacts of dams on the natural ecosystem as well as to the people that depend upon them for their livelihood and also addresses the mitigation of environmental impacts on dams and reservoirs.
