Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies

Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies

The Textbook of Ion Channels is a set of three volumes that provides a wide-ranging refer- ence source on ion channels for students instructors and researchers. Ion channels are membrane proteins that control the electrical properties of neurons and cardiac cells; mediate the detection and response to sensory stimuli like light sound odor and taste; and regulate the response to physical stimuli like temperature and pressure. In non-excit- able tissues ion channels are instrumental for the regulation of basic salt balance that is critical for homeostasis. Ion channels are located at the surface membrane of cells giving them the unique ability to communicate with the environment as well as the membrane of intracellular organelles allowing them to regulate internal homeostasis. Ion channels are fundamentally important for human health and diseases and are important targets for pharmaceuticals in mental illness heart disease anesthesia pain and other clinical appli- cations. The modern methods used in their study are powerful and diverse ranging from single ion-channel measurement techniques to models of ion channel diseases in animals and human clinical trials for ion channel drugs. Volume II starts with ion channel taxonomy and features coverage of major ion channel families and describes the physiological role structural components gating mechanisms and biophysics permeation and selectivity regulation pharmacology and roles in dis- ease mechanisms. Channels in this volume include voltage-activated sodium calcium and potassium channels inward-rectifier and two-pore domain potassium channels calcium- activated potassium channels cyclic nucleotide-gated channels pacemaker ion channels chloride channels ligand-gated receptors activated by acetylcholine glutamate 5-HT3 GABA and glycine acid-sensing channels P2X receptors TRP channels store-operated channels pressure-activated piezo channels ryanodine receptors and proton channels. All three volumes give the reader an introduction to fundamental concepts needed to understand the mechanism of ion channels; a guide to the technical aspects of ion channel research; offer a modern guide to the properties of major ion channel families; and include coverage of key examples of regulatory physiological and disease roles for ion channels. | Textbook of Ion Channels Volume II Properties Function and Pharmacology of the Superfamilies

Handbook of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging for Physicists Modelling Dosimetry and Radiation Protection Volume II

Mathematical modelling is an important part of nuclear medicine. Therefore several chapters of this book have been dedicated towards describing this topic. In these chapters an emphasis has been put on describing the mathematical modelling of the radiation transport of photons and electrons as well as on the transportation of radiopharmaceuticals between different organs and compartments. It also includes computer models of patient dosimetry. Two chapters of this book are devoted towards introducing the concept of biostatistics and radiobiology. These chapters are followed by chapters detailing dosimetry procedures commonly used in the context of diagnostic imaging as well as patient-specific dosimetry for radiotherapy treatments. For safety reasons many of the methods used in nuclear medicine and molecular imaging are tightly regulated. Therefore this volume also highlights the basic principles for radiation protection. It discusses the process of how guidelines and regulations aimed at minimizing radiation exposure are determined and implemented by international organisations. Finally this book describes how different dosimetry methods may be utilized depending on the intended target including whole-body or organ-specific imaging as well as small-scale to cellular dosimetry. This text will be an invaluable resource for libraries institutions and clinical and academic medical physicists searching for a complete account of what defines nuclear medicine. Principles of Toxicology Testing

Nationally toxicology programs have evolved from a traditional exploration of the chemistry and applied toxicity of chemicals and drugs to a more comprehensive study of toxicology and toxicology testing as independent entities. Consequently the second edition of Principles of Toxicology Testing starts with basic toxicological principles including absorption distribution metabolism and elimination of toxins including chemicals and drugs. The book then continues with animal (in vivo) and in vitro toxicology testing methods associated with toxicological analysis and preclinical drug development. As in the first edition the book begins with an introduction into the fundamentals of toxicology (Section I) to prepare readers for the subsequent topics and continues through with a discussion of toxicokinetics and human risk assessment. This introductory material is useful in understanding the applications of toxicology testing. Section II describes the fundamental principles of toxicology testing in animals in greater detail. This section describes acute toxicity studies as well as subchronic and chronic studies performed on animals. Special emphasis is placed on study design and determination of classical indicators for acute and chronic testing such as the LD50. The book examines other short- and long-term animal toxicity testing methodologies including dermal ocular and reproductive toxicity testing. In addition mutagenicity and carcinogenicity studies are also discussed in separate chapters. Section III introduces and discusses in vitro alternatives to animal toxicology tests. This section emphasizes cell culture methodology and cellular methods for acute systemic toxicity target organ toxicity and local toxicity. The contributors present the advantages and disadvantages of alternative methods. They also describe the use of high-throughput screening and its applications the concepts of standardizatio
