Indium Nitride and Related Alloys

Indium Nitride and Related Alloys

Written by recognized leaders in this dynamic and rapidly expanding field Indium Nitride and Related Alloys provides a clear and comprehensive summary of the present state of knowledge in indium nitride (InN) research. It elucidates and clarifies the often confusing and contradictory scientific literature to provide valuable and rigorous insight into the structural optical and electronic properties of this quickly emerging semiconductor material and its related alloys. Drawing from both theoretical and experimental perspectives it provides a thorough review of all data since 2001 when the band gap of InN was identified as 0. 7 eV. The superior transport and optical properties of InN and its alloys offer tremendous potential for a wide range of device applications including high-efficiency solar cells and chemical sensors. Indeed the now established narrow band gap nature of InN means that the InGaN alloys cover the entire solar spectrum and InAlN alloys span from the infrared to the ultraviolet. However with unsolved problems including high free electron density difficulty in characterizing p-type doping and the lack of a lattice-matched substrate indium nitride remains perhaps the least understood III-V semiconductor. Covering the epitaxial growth experimental characterization theoretical understanding and device potential of this semiconductor and its alloys this book is essential reading for both established researchers and those new to the field.

Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism

Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism

Traditionally resources on terrorism and counterterrorism tend to focus on the social behavioral and legal aspects of the subject with minimal emphasis on the scientific and technological aspects. Taking into account these practical considerations the second edition of Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism discusses the nature of terrorism and the materials used by terrorists. It describes how intelligence professionals and law enforcement personnel can detect and destroy these materials and how they can deal with terrorist groups. This volume begins by introducing the shift in analysis of terrorist attacks after September 11 2001 and summarizes selected case studies. It discusses the origin and nature of terrorism and the factors involved in diplomacy. Covering a broad range of topics the book examines: Aerosol dispersion of toxic materials Bioterrorism and the manufacture detection and delivery of biological agents Agricultural terrorism Nuclear terrorism and nuclear weapons systems threats and safeguards Chemical terrorism including manufacture detection delivery and decontamination Cyber-terrorism Personal protective equipment The role of government at federal state and local levels The role of international agencies and their resources capabilities and responsibilities The National Infrastructure Protection Plan As terrorist activities increase globally it is critical that those charged with protecting the public understand the myriad of ways in which terrorists operate. While we cannot predict where when and how terrorists will strike our vigilance in staying abreast of the terrorist threat is the only way to have a fighting chance against those who seek to destroy our world.

The Tower of Pisa History Construction and Geotechnical Stabilization

The Tower of Pisa History Construction and Geotechnical Stabilization

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is known worldwide for its five-degree lean. The Tower is the Campanile of the Cathedral which together with the Baptistry and Cemetery form a breath-taking collection of monuments which are regarded as supreme examples of early Renaissance Romanesque architecture. In March 1990 the Tower was closed to the public as it was declared unsafe and close to collapse. A Commission was set up by the Italian Government with the task of developing and implementing stabilization measures. This book begins with a brief description of the history of the Tower and its construction. The reader is then introduced to the huge challenges faced by the Commission in designing and implementing appropriate stabilization measures whilst at the same time satisfying the demanding requirements of conserving a world heritage monument. In particular two historical studies are described which proved to be most valuable in arriving at suitable stabilization measures. The first was a deduction of the history of inclination of the tower during and subsequent to construction. The results of this study were used to calibrate a sophisticated numerical model of the tower and the underlying very soft ground which proved vital in evaluating the effectiveness of various stabilization schemes. The second study was of measurements of movement made since 1911. This latter study revealed an unexpected mechanism of foundation movement which proved crucial in developing the temporary and permanent stabilization measures and which resulted in the Tower being re-opened to the public in June 2001. The book will appeal to both professionals and students in the fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It will also interest specialised audiences of geotechnical engineers and conservation architects. It may also be of wider interest to anyone planning to visit Pisa or who is intrigued as to what caused the Tower to lean and how it was stabilized. | The Tower of Pisa History Construction and Geotechnical Stabilization

Structural Analysis and Design to Prevent Disproportionate Collapse

Structural Analysis and Design to Prevent Disproportionate Collapse

Hard Guidance on Preventing Disproportionate Collapse Disproportionate collapse is a pressing issue in current design practice. Numerous causes are possible – especially forms of extreme loading such as blast fire earthquake or vehicle collisions. But it is the mechanism and its prevention which are of especial interest and concern. After the World Trade Center collapse in 2001 interest was sparked and it is now imperative for a design engineer to have sufficient knowledge on both the analysis and design against disproportionate collapse. Detailed structural design guidance for preventing this has been developed in Europe and the US – such as BS5950 in the UK and guidance from the Department of Defense and the General Services Administration in the US. However Structural Analysis and Design to Prevent Disproportionate Collapse is the first systematic text in the market to help design engineers or structural engineering students to properly understand this guidance. Covers the design and analysis of a structure to prevent disproportionate collapse Provides an understanding of disproportionate collapse problems for different structures under different loads Contains detailed knowledge on the design and progressive collapse analysis of complex structures Incorporates ABAQUS® ETABS SAP2000 and Highlights 3D Modeling Techniques As progressive collapse analysis is a distinctive and complicated procedure it normally requires an ability to use a modern commercial finite element package and Structural Analysis and Design to Prevent Disproportionate Collapse features a detailed introduction to the use of FE programs such as ABAQUS® in progressive collapse analysis. In addition case studies are performed using 3D FE models based on various types of structures such as multi-storey buildings long-span space structures and bridges. These models replicate real collapse incidents and prestigious construction projects such as progressive collapse analysis of the Twin Towers structural fire analysis of World Trade Center 7 blast analysis of the Murrah Federal Building and progressive collapse analysis of the Millau Viaduct which help designers to fully understand the failure mechanisms and effective mitigation methods in practice.
