Topiary Bear Little (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

Topiary Bear Little (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

This stunning topiary is made from clipped Ligustrum Jonandrum. The Privet, also known as the Ligustrum, starts its tale from Asia, eventually extending into Australia and Europe. The actual plant is used as a street tree in Europe and has an interesting history in that it became very popular as a street ornament in Britain during WWII when the government started to requisition post-1850 iron gates and railings to be turned into ammunition for the war effort. The plant itself is semi-evergreen and is a very bushy shrub although this variant grows into a lovely lollipop shape hence its other name, ‘Lollipop Privet’. It produces abundant creamy white flowers with a rather unusual scent in late summer and small, black berries in autumn. It needs regular watering three times a week. The Hardiness rating is H6, meaning that it is perfect for the UK climate. Privet grows rapidly and needs clipping every two to three weeks in the summer months. Growth slows down and stops in September, after which the shrub will retain its shape until next spring. All parts of the plant are toxic and may cause severe discomfort if eaten. The soil needs to be well drained and a full sun or partial shade is recommended. Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) - Cone

Common English Holly is a medium-sized evergreen tree, which grows slowly when young, but speeds up a little as it matures. Its dark, glossy green, wave-shaped leaves are edged with spines and are a popular decoration at Christmas when combined with its seasonal red berries. Resilient against even the most extreme British weather, they bring rich colours to your garden throughout the year. Ilex Aquifolium (English Holly) is an ideal topiary plant because of its slow growth and low maintenance requirements. Ilex Aquifolium is a hardy shrub that can grow almost anywhere except in extremely wet conditions. Common English holly, Ilex aquifolium, is the most popular holly species grown in British gardens and is widely used for decorations at Christmas. Holly is dioecious, which means there are separate male and female plants. The white flowers which appear in May are pollinated by insects and berries appear on female plants by late November. Holly berries are a good winter food source for birds. However, holly berries are mildly toxic to humans, causing vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. Rhyncospermum Jasminoides / Trachelospermum Jasminoides (Star Jasmine) - Cylinder

Rhyncospermum Jasminoides / Trachelospermum Jasminoides (Star Jasmine) - Cylinder

A climbing, evergreen, woody shrub. Its leaves are oval, shiny and darkgreen in colour with a lighter shade on the undersides. From May to the end of the month of August, simple, pure white, 5-petalled, intensely fragrant flowers are produced. Trachelospermum jasminoides is commonly grown as an ornamental plant and houseplant. In gardens, public landscapes, and parks it is used as a climbing vine, a groundcover, and a fragrant potted plant on terraces and patios. It will flower in full sun, partial shade, or total shade, and requires well-drained soil (if constantly kept damp it may succumb to fungal infection), moderate water, moderate fertilizer, and a climbing structure (whether a trellis or another plant is secondary). Propagation is most commonly done with cuttings/clones. It is widely planted in California and also particularly in the Southeastern United States. It is debated however, where the common name for this plant, confederate jasmine, comes from. While some dictionaries suggest that the name comes from the plant’s common cultivation in the southern United States, others argue that the term actually comes from Malaysia, and the former Malay confederacy. It gets another of its common names, trader’s compass, from an old Uzbekistan saying that it pointed traders in the right direction, provided they were of good character. It is also called star jasmine in Europe and Chinese jasmine or Chinese ivy in Asia. Latin Name: Rhyncospermum Jasminoides, Trachelospermum Jasminoides English Name: Star Jasmine, Confederate Jasmine, Southern Jasmine Species: Oleaceae Genus: Trachelospermum Foliage Type: Evergreen Foliage: Green Fragrance: Flower Flower: White Flowering Period: Spring-Summer Suggested Location: Outdoor. Mexican Blue Palm (Brahea Armata)

Mexican Blue Palm (Brahea Armata)

Brahea Armata or Mexican Blue Palm trees are native to the hot climates of Baja California in Mexico. With massive fan-like fronds, the Mexican Blue makes a great ornamental plant for the British garden. Though they originate from hot climates, the Mexican blue isn't very hardy at H1C and needs sheltering during a standard British winter. It can flourish either potted or bedded into most soil types. Brahea armata is called Mexican Blue because of its unique blue-silver leaves and grey tinted trunk which can grow to half a meter in diameter. In terms of maintenance, as the palm grows, dead fronds (palm leaves) will need to be cut off, other than that it will self sustain fairly well and in general needs little maintenance. The plant itself is prone to potential pests so keep an eye out for this. It is generally disease free however so that can give you some peace of mind. Latin Name: Brahea Armata English Name: Mexican Blue Palm Species: Arecaceae Genus: Brahea Foliage Type: Evergreen Foliage: Green-Blue Flower: Yellow Flowering Period: Summer Suggested Location: Outdoor. Suggested Soil Type: Well-drained. Loam, Chalk, Sand Suggested Exposure to Sunlight: Full Sun Suggested Exposure to Weather: Sheltered Hardiness Rating: Low (H1C) Lowest Temperature Tolerance: 5 °C to 10 °C (41 °F to 50 °F) Growth Habit: Columnar/Upright Pests: May be affected by glasshouse red spider mite and scale insects Diseases: Generally disease-free Cultivation: In frost-prone areas, grow young specimens in full light as houseplants or under glass at 5 – 15 °C in loam-based potting compost such as John Innes No. 2, water moderately and apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly while in growth, water sparingly in winter, and pot on or top-dress in spring - for more advice, see palm cultivation indoors; in frost-free areas, grow in well-drained soil in full sun; will tolerate poor, dry soil, and though frost-tender will survive short periods at 0ºC - for more advice, see palm cultivation outdoors Propagation: Sow seed at 23 – 27 °C in spring Pruning: No pruning required Suggested planting locations and garden types: Drought Resistant Architectural Patio & Container Plants Sub-tropical Final Height: 12 m (39 ft) Final Sideways Spread: 4 m – 8 m (13.12 ft – 26 ft) Delivery Cost: This is calculated based on the total size, weight and quantity of your order, as well as the location of your delivery address.
