Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program Grade 3

Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program Grade 3

The Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program targets reading comprehension skills in high-ability learners by moving students through an inquiry process from basic understanding to critical analyses of texts using a field-tested method developed by the Center for Gifted Education at William & Mary. Students in grade 3 will learn to comprehend and analyze any reading passage after completing the activities in Jacob's Ladder Grade 3 (2nd ed. previously published as Level 1). Research conducted by the Center for Gifted Education with Title 1 students demonstrated that the Jacob's Ladder Reading Comprehension Program delivers results related to improved reading comprehension increased critical thinking and an enhanced interest in reading. Using skill ladders connected to short stories poetry essays and nonfiction students move from lower order concrete thinking skills to higher order critical thinking skills. The ladders include multiple skills necessary for academic success covering language arts standards such as sequencing determining cause and effect classifying inferencing and recognizing main ideas. The second edition of the book builds off the previous Level 1 edition including new readings and ladders for student use. This book provides teachers with an explanation of the nature of supplementary tasks that scaffold reading comprehension. Also included is an overview of the goals and objectives of the Jacob's Ladder tasks and suggestions for implementation giving every teacher the tools needed to promote successful reading comprehension. Optional Student Workbook PacksIn addition to this teacher's guide companion student workbooks are available for Poetry Short Stories and Nonfiction. The student workbooks feature ample room for student responses and notes make reviewing and providing feedback on student work easier than ever provide students with an easy-to-use reference to use during discussions and save time as there is no need to reproduce student handouts. The Speed of Green Grade 8 STEM Road Map for Middle School

The Speed of Green Grade 8 STEM Road Map for Middle School

What if you could challenge your eighth graders to design a racing vehicle with minimum environmental impact while exploring the role of renewable and non-renewable energy sources? With this volume in the STEM Road Map Curriculum Series you can! The Speed of Green outlines a journey that will steer your students toward authentic problem solving while grounding them in integrated STEM disciplines. Like the other volumes in the series this book is designed to meet the growing need to infuse real-world learning into K–12 classrooms. This interdisciplinary eight-lesson module uses project- and problem-based learning to help students explore the potential role of renewable and non-renewable energy sources in transportation with an emphasis on the auto industry. Using their understanding of the engineering design process (EDP) scientific concepts and environmental conservation considerations student teams will develop a plan for a competitive automobile racing team to fuel its vehicle with minimal environmental impact. To support this goal students will do the following: Identify finite energy resources and distinguish between these and renewable energy sources and identify implications of the use of those fuel sources on the environment Conduct life cycle analyses (LCAs) of various fuel sources and apply the results to make decisions about the effects of various fuel sources Identify several ways that carbon-based fuels have impacted the U. S. economy and foreign relations Identify the effects of human activities on the biosphere with an emphasis on the effects of the widespread use of carbon-based fuels Apply the engineering design process (EDP) to solve a problem and design and build a small-scale electric vehicle Synthesize their learning and working collaboratively by creating and presenting a plan for a race team that minimizes its environmental impact Create an engaging presentation incorporating oral presentations and visual displays to present projects to an audience of peers teachers and industry professionals. The STEM Road Map Curriculum Series is anchored in the Next Generation Science Standards the Common Core State Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning. In-depth and flexible The Speed of Green can be used as a whole unit or in part to meet the needs of districts schools and teachers who are charting a course toward an integrated STEM approach. | The Speed of Green Grade 8 STEM Road Map for Middle School

Multidirectional Speed in Sport Research to Application

Multidirectional Speed in Sport Research to Application

During field- and court-based sports players are continually required to perceive their environment within a match and select and perform the most appropriate action to achieve their immediate goal within that match instance. This ability is commonly known as agility considered a vital quality in such sports and may incorporate a variety of locomotion and instantaneous actions. Multidirectional speed is a global term to describe the competency and capacity to perform such actions: accelerate decelerate change direction and ultimately maintain speed in multiple directions and movements within the context of sports-specific scenarios encompassing agility speed and many other related qualities. Multidirectional speed in sport depends on a multitude of factors including perceptual-cognitive abilities physical qualities and the technical ability to perform the previously mentioned actions. Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application reviews the science of multidirectional speed and translates this information into real-world application in order to provide a resource for practitioners to develop multidirectional speed with athletes bringing together knowledge from a wealth of world-leading researchers and applied practitioners in the area of speed and agility to provide a complete resource to assist practitioners in designing effective multidirectional speed development programmes. This text is critical reading for undergraduate and graduate sports science students all individuals involved in training athletes (e. g. coaches physiotherapists athletic trainers) and researchers in the field of sports science and sports medicine. | Multidirectional Speed in Sport Research to Application

Safety-II in Practice Developing the Resilience Potentials

Safety-II in Practice Developing the Resilience Potentials

Safety-I is defined as the freedom from unacceptable harm. The purpose of traditional safety management is therefore to find ways to ensure this ‘freedom’. But as socio-technical systems steadily have become larger and less tractable this has become harder to do. Resilience engineering pointed out from the very beginning that resilient performance - an organisation’s ability to function as required under expected and unexpected conditions alike – required more than the prevention of incidents and accidents. This developed into a new interpretation of safety (Safety-II) and consequently a new form of safety management. Safety-II changes safety management from protective safety and a focus on how things can go wrong to productive safety and a focus on how things can and do go well. For Safety-II the aim is not just the elimination of hazards and the prevention of failures and malfunctions but also how best to develop an organisation’s potentials for resilient performance – the way it responds monitors learns and anticipates. That requires models and methods that go beyond the Safety-I toolbox. This book introduces a comprehensive approach for the management of Safety-II called the Resilience Assessment Grid (RAG). It explains the principles of the RAG and how it can be used to develop the resilience potentials. The RAG provides four sets of diagnostic and formative questions that can be tailored to any organisation. The questions are based on the principles of resilience engineering and backed by practical experience from several domains. Safety-II in Practice is for both the safety professional and academic reader. For the professional it presents a workable method (RAG) for the management of Safety-II with a proven track record. For academic and student readers the book is a concise and practical presentation of resilience engineering. | Safety-II in Practice Developing the Resilience Potentials
