Net-Zero and Positive Energy Communities Best Practice Guidance Based on the ZERO-PLUS Project Experience

This book presents a methodology for the design construction monitoring optimization and post-occupancy evaluation of net-zero and positive-energy communities based on the experiences gained in the EU Horizon 2020 ZERO-PLUS project. It describes the steps tools and methods developed during the project providing practical information for the energy and construction sector that will be of interest to students engineers architects developers and professionals working around high performance architecture and sustainable communities. Through the ZERO-PLUS project a consortium of 32 partners from eight countries including academic institutions technology providers architects and construction companies designed four communities covering completely different geo-climatic regions construction practices and cultural backgrounds in Cyprus Italy France and the UK. The communities were designed optimized constructed monitored handed over to tenants post-occupancy evaluated and troubleshooted through a system of continuous collaboration and data acquisition. This book presents these case studies and shows how the project targets of reducing electricity consumption below 20 kWh/m2/y increasing electricity production from Renewable Energy Systems to over 50 kWh/m2/y and at cheaper costs when compared to current zero-energy buildings were reached and surpassed. These cases demonstrate that a holistic and interactive approach to design and construction can bring communities a high standard of sustainability. The key features of the book include: Practical guidance drawn from the interdisciplinary international and remote cooperation between experts from academia and industry across the construction sector A survey of the state-of-the-art on net-zero and positive-energy communities including the experience and the lessons learned from previous projects and from the ZERO-PLUS project Descriptions of novel emerging renewable energy technologies integrated into real case study communities to achieve the energy generation target of the communities A comprehensive set of approaches tools guidelines best practices challenges and lessons learned from the five-year ZERO-PLUS project and the completion of four residential case studies to inform the reader of how to achieve affordable net-zero energy communities Four typologies of residential communities located in different climatic conditions are presented touching on the critical aspects of the design construction monitoring and occupancy phase A discussion of future trends for developing communities that are more liveable accessible and sustainable and which can comply with new energy policies in a way that is affordable for the owners and residents. | Net-Zero and Positive Energy Communities Best Practice Guidance Based on the ZERO-PLUS Project Experience

Psychoanalysis and the Birth of the Self A Radical Interdisciplinary Approach

Psychoanalysis and the Birth of the Self A Radical Interdisciplinary Approach

This book draws psychoanalysis out of unsubstantiated hermeneutic speculation and into the science and philosophy of the Self. Mark Leffert offers a survey of where we as human beings come from going back into prehistory and our development as individuals. Psychoanalysis and the Birth of the Self is written to provide psychoanalysts with interdisciplinary information drawn from fields that they may have had little access to. Leffert undertakes a novel integration of topics not frequently discussed together resulting in a radical critique of the theorization of psychoanalysis. The book begins by setting the story with a short analysis of the history of psychoanalysis. A new science has been founded on the recognition of the impossibility of separating evolution from development; it is called Evo-Devo. Applied to the human condition it integrates development with palaeoanthropology and forms the basis for exploring such topics as the neurophilosophy of consciousness the birth of the Self and its neurodevelopment. It includes epigenetics in the conversation. Leffert then takes a radical turn integrating the biological Evo-Devo of the Self with the study of its Existence that is Existentialism and Phenomenology. The integration of these two threads Evo-Devo and Existentialism offers a powerful and unique tool for exploring the Self. The author offers an innovative way of understanding an individual that pulls together their biology their development and the way they choose to exist in the world. It steps outside of the traditional ways of clinically understanding an individual not by abandoning them but rather by powerfully supplementing them. Psychoanalysis and the Birth of the Self offers a novel interdisciplinary braiding of disparate strands of knowledge that will be of interest to psychoanalysts as well as those in the disciplines of neuroscience existentialism and phenomenology and anthropology. | Psychoanalysis and the Birth of the Self A Radical Interdisciplinary Approach

Critical Game Theory Humanistic and Radical Alternatives to the Mainstream

Critical Game Theory Humanistic and Radical Alternatives to the Mainstream

The models in mainstream game theory generally assume that actors act according to a single consistent utility function. Empirical studies common sense and humanistic wisdom all suggest that that assumption is too simple. This book starts with an assumption that actors are controlled by diverse inconsistent forces and demonstrates that introducing this level of complexity allows for the creation of critical game theory models that can help to attain new insights into nature human nature human institutions and human behavior. The book begins with an evolutionary or Evo model in which the players have concerns for the other player as well as egoistic interests. Part I analyzes the Prisoner’s Dilemma using a literary or Lit model in which the players have entropic or Entro masochistic and sadistic drives as well as altruistic and egoistic ones. Part II suggests that the Lit model opens the door to a “where Entro is let Evo be” critical perspective on politics. Part III considers how core stories in mainstream game theory can be usefully supplemented and deepened by critical models and reflects on possible futures for critical game theory. The discussion of games and subgames includes poems as well as matrices in pursuit of a mode of presentation that respects the complex simultaneously humanistic and scientific qualities of critical game theory. The vision of critical game theory advanced in the book will be of significant interest to researchers in an array of theoretical and applied disciplines including but not limited to literature psychology political science economics computer science ethics business ethics law and law and economics. | Critical Game Theory Humanistic and Radical Alternatives to the Mainstream
