Topiary Formula 1 (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

Topiary Formula 1 (Ligustrum Jonandrum)

This stunning topiary is made from clipped Ligustrum Jonandrum. The Privet, also known as the Ligustrum, starts its tale from Asia, eventually extending into Australia and Europe. The actual plant is used as a street tree in Europe and has an interesting history in that it became very popular as a street ornament in Britain during WWII when the government started to requisition post-1850 iron gates and railings to be turned into ammunition for the war effort. The plant itself is semi-evergreen and is a very bushy shrub although this variant grows into a lovely lollipop shape hence its other name, ‘Lollipop Privet’. It produces abundant creamy white flowers with a rather unusual scent in late summer and small, black berries in autumn. It needs regular watering three times a week. The Hardiness rating is H6, meaning that it is perfect for the UK climate. Privet grows rapidly and needs clipping every two to three weeks in the summer months. Growth slows down and stops in September, after which the shrub will retain its shape until next spring. All parts of the plant are toxic and may cause severe discomfort if eaten. The soil needs to be well drained and a full sun or partial shade is recommended. The Magnolia Grandiflora is a plant that is native to the Southern U.S states, ranging from Southeastern North Carolina, Central Florida and all the way to East Texas. The plant itself is very popular along traditional culture and as late as 2018, an iconic Southern Magnolia planted 200 years ago by President Andrew Jackson finally reached maturity. Magnolia Grandiflora typically has a single stem (or trunk) and a pyramidal shape. The leaves are simple and broadly ovate, 12–20 cm long and 6–12 cm broad, with smooth margins. They are dark green, stiff and leathery, and often scurfy underneath with yellow-brown pubescence. The large, showy, lemon citronella-scented flowers are white, up to 30 cm across and fragrant, with six to 12 petals with a waxy texture, emerging from the tips of twigs on mature trees in late spring. Make sure to prune this plant in group 1 in Spring when the growth starts or group 13 in Summer if wall-trained. Be careful of potential pests and diseases when caring for this plant. Ficus Carica (Edible Common Fig Tree) – Half Standard - Extra

Ficus Carica (Edible Common Fig Tree) – Half Standard - Extra

The Fig Tree (Ficus Carica) Extra is an eye-catching Mediterranean plant that makes a brilliant centrepiece for any garden, with its smooth grey-barked trunk and lush foliage. Its attractive large leaves have 3-5 lobes and are known for their pleasant fragrance. The fig tree is a deciduous tree which originates in the Middle East and is native to Syria and Persia where it grows among rocks and scrub on hot dry soils. However fig trees have been cultivated in the UK for over 2000 years since Roman times and the fig tree is well adapted to our climate to the extent that it can self-propagate in the mild SW regions. Ficus carica is resistant to frost and will re-grow from root level in spring if hard frost damage cause it to die back. The fig tree grows best in an area that is sheltered but receives plenty of sun, which is why many gardeners successfully plant figs near or next to a South-facing wall in the UK. Fig trees need well-drained soil and won’t do well in shade. Most fig trees benefit from starting off in pots before being introduced to garden beds when they are strong enough and are starting to outgrow their constricted environment. When potted it is essential to water your plant regularly but avoid over-watering. Once mature the fig tree will thrive in moist or dry soil and can tolerate drought. The fig tree usually bears fruits from early summer to September producing abundant dark violet, green or black figs in hot summers. Ficus Carica is ideal for container cultivation as it needs to have its roots restricted for optimum fruit crop; otherwise it will bear more leaves than fruit. It is rather hardy to the UK climate, standing at H4 on the scale. However it would be best to shelter this plant during extreme cold temperatures, particularly in Scotland. The plant itself is generally pest and disease free. Follow the guidelines for when to prune this plant. The final height is 6 m (19.6 ft) and the final spread is 4.5 m (14.7 ft) Product Dimensions 500-600 litre pot: trunk height 80 – 120 cm (2.6-3.9 ft), trunk girth 50 - 55 cm (1.6 - 1.8 ft), canopy app. 180 - 250 cm (5.9 - 8.2 ft) Latin Names: Ficus Carica Brown Turkey English Names: Edible Common Fig Tree Species: Moraceae Genus: Ficus Foliage Type: Deciduous Foliage: Green Suggested Location: Outdoors Suggested Soil Type: Well-drained, Moist but well-drained.
