Morus Alba ‘Pendula’, is a popular ornamental plant, also commonly known as Weeping White Mulberry. It is a grafted deciduous weeping small tree. The tree produces both male and female green catkins in early summer. These are followed by edible raspberry like fruit, these turn from white to pink and red in late summer. The species of this tree, Morus alba, is native to northern China. This plant has historically been cultivated as a food plant for the silkworm, this began over 4000 years ago. An interesting fact about the tree is that the pollen of this plant is released from the stamens at approximately 350 mph, making it the fastest known movement in the plant kingdom. Due to its ability to cross hybridise with the Red Mulberry, Morus rubra, this plant is considered to be an invasive species in parts of Northern America.
