Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics

Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics

This book aims to overcome the traditional ray paradigm and provide an analytical paradigm for Nonimaging Optics based on Field Theory. As a second objective the authors address the connections between this Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics and other radiative transfer theories. The book introduces the Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics as a new analytical paradigm not statistical to analyze problems in the frame of nonimaging geometrical optics with a formulation based on field theory of irradiance vector D. This new paradigm provides new principles and tools in the optical system design methods complementary to flowline method overcoming the classical ray paradigm. This new Field paradigm can be considered as a generalization of the ray paradigm and new accurate and faster computation algorithms will be developed. In a parallel way the advance in the knowledge of the principles of Field Theory of Nonimaging Optics has produced clear advances in the connection between nonimaging optics and other apparently disconnected theories of radiation transfer. The irradiance vector D can be considered as the macroscopic average of Poynting vector with a clear connection with radiation pressure. Lorentz geometry techniques can also be applied to study irradiance vector D. There are clear thermodynamic connections between the nonimaging concentrator and Stefan-Boltzmann law of radiation. From this thermodynamic connection nonimaging optics and irradiance vector D can also be studied from a phase space point of view. This book is intended for researchers graduate students academics and professionals looking to analyze design and optimize optical systems.

Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

The interaction of high-power lasers with matter can generate Terahertz radiations that efficiently contribute to THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy and also would replace X-rays in medical and security applications. When a short intense laser pulse ionizes a gas it may produce new frequencies even in VUV to XUV domain. The duration of XUV pulses can be confined down to the isolated attosecond pulse levels required to study the electronic re-arrangement and ultrafast processes. Another important aspect of laser-matter interaction is the laser thermonuclear fusion control where accelerated particles also find an efficient use. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics including Electromagnetic waves and lasers THz radiation using semiconducting materials / nanostructures / gases / plasmas Surface plasmon resonance THz radiation detection Particle acceleration technologies X-ray lasers High harmonics and attosecond lasers Laser based techniques of thermonuclear fusion Controlled fusion devices including NIF and ITER The book comprises of 11 chapters and every chapter starts with a lucid introduction to the main topic. Then sub-topics are sedulously discussed keeping in mind their basics methodology state-of-the-art and future perspective that will prove to be salutary for readers. High quality solved examples are appended to the chapters for their deep understanding and relevant applications. In view of the nature of the topics and their level of discussion this book is expected to have pre-eminent potential for researchers along with postgraduate and undergraduate students all over the world. | Laser-Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

Faith in Science

Faith in Science

There is growing academic interest in addressing the relationship of religion and science. There are also very generous funding sources that encourage scientists to demonstrate the reality of purpose in the world. Still there are organizations offering support to community groups dedicated to discussing religion and science. Contributors explore this development in Faith in Science. The intellectual initiatives analyzed here seem far removed from the deep religious and cultural divisions that dominate the contemporary geopolitical landscape. This emerging industry however originates in a cultural debate that set the evolutionary view of Nature against revelation's conception of Nature as the fulfillment of God's creation. The two worldviews are hopelessly mismatched although scientific creationism purports to have uncovered scriptural evidence that invites another look. Along the way the imposition of theological themes onto the geological record became a tendency for many naturalists. Peter Medawar's scathing review of Teilhard de Chardin's The Phenomenon of Man in 1961 remains as a warning for those who mix Darwinian orthodoxy and theological parlance. The challenge Medawar would have us believe is not to abandon the exacting methods and logic of science in favor of a poetic dream of how consciousness is a manifestation of energy. But does this mean that science and religion are only methodologically demarcated? Must we insist on the traditional boundaries instituted by scientific conventions and religious beliefs? From various historical religious and scientific vantage points contributors to this volume who include Guy Consolmagno Donald Kraybill David Ray Griffin Gerald L. Schroeder Robert Pollack Robert Pennock Carol Wayne Wright Bill Durbin Kathleen Duffy and Anthony Matteo take up these challenges.

Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

The programming language Fortran dates back to 1957 when a team of IBM engineers released the first Fortran Compiler. During the past 60 years the language had been revised and updated several times to incorporate more features to enable writing clean and structured computer programs. The present version is Fortran 2018. Since the dawn of the computer era there had been a constant demand for a “larger” and “faster” machine. To increase the speed there are three hurdles. The density of the active components on a VLSI chip cannot be increased indefinitely and with the increase of the density heat dissipation becomes a major problem. Finally the speed of any signal cannot exceed the velocity of the light. However by using several inexpensive processors in parallel coupled with specialized software and hardware programmers can achieve computing speed similar to a supercomputer. This book can be used to learn the modern Fortran from the beginning and the technique of developing parallel programs using Fortran. It is for anyone who wants to learn Fortran. Knowledge beyond high school mathematics is not required. There is not another book on the market yet which deals with Fortran 2018 as well as parallel programming. FEATURES Descriptions of majority of Fortran 2018 instructions Numerical Model String with Variable Length IEEE Arithmetic and Exceptions Dynamic Memory Management Pointers Bit handling C-Fortran Interoperability Object Oriented Programming Parallel Programming using Coarray Parallel Programming using OpenMP Parallel Programming using Message Passing Interface (MPI) THE AUTHOR Dr Subrata Ray is a retired Professor Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science Kolkata. | Fortran 2018 with Parallel Programming

Democracy In Poland Second Edition

Democracy In Poland Second Edition

Ever-changing election rules a highly fluid party system a constitution considered illegitimate by more than one major political actor polarized political elites and a system of corruption that has grown up together with the young democracy itself -these characterize contemporary Polish politics. At the same time Poland is frequently identified as the most successful example of a transition from communism to capitalism having led this series of world-changing transitions. It has distanced itself from a turbulent history as pawn in Eastern Europe's international politics to become a leading candidate for membership in the exclusive European Union club. As Polish democratic politics evolves it is taking unexpected forms and producing equally unexpected results. Through a comprehensive analysis of politics in this young European democracy Marjorie Castle and Ray Taras explain the complexity and uncertainty of political processes and outcomes in Poland. Poland'spast -the flawed Second Republic established after World War I as well as the imperfect independence in the Soviet shadow following World War II's devastation - dramatizes the unique historic opportunity it was given in 1989 to determine its own political future and perhaps eventually become a major European power. Choices made in 1989 and thereafter would not only construct a new democracy but shape and limit its possibilities. The primary focus here is on contemporary politics: what the fundamental political cleavages are whether parties adequately represent popular interests who the political elites are and what games they play whatinfluence the Catholic Church still holds in an aspiring Western-style secular republic and what policy challenges face Poland in the future. Inimitable political leaders changing political arenas and complexpolicy-making processes come to life through a fascinating narrative characterized by an insider's insight. | Democracy In Poland Second Edition

Terahertz Technology Principles and Applications in the Agri-Food Industry

Terahertz Technology Principles and Applications in the Agri-Food Industry

Terahertz (THz) technology is an active area of research but only in recent years has the application of THz waves (T waves) in food and agricultural industries been explored. Terahertz Technology: Principles and Applications in the Agri-Food Industry describes the operating principles of THz technology and discusses applications and advantages of the THz regime of the electromagnetic spectrum for use in the agri-food industry. The agri-food industry is focusing on the development of non-destructive quality evaluation techniques that can provide accurate analysis quickly and are environmentally friendly. Among such techniques is THz technology that provides a novel noninvasive approach to quality assessment and safety assurance of agri-food products. The low energy of T waves is best suited for the analysis of sensitive biomaterials and does not cause photoionization. Therefore THz imaging is complementary to X-ray imaging. Although accessing the THz spectrum is tedious by conventional devices the combination of optics and electronics principles has opened a dimension of research in this field. This book provides an overview of THz spectroscopy and imaging system components types of THz systems and applications and advantages of THz for applications in the agri-food industry. It describes the basic working mechanism operating principle operation modes and system components of THz spectroscopy and imaging. Various advancements in THz technology related to agricultural and food applications are discussed that could serve as a guidebook for all those working and interested in non-destructive food assessment techniques. Key Features: Explores broader applications of the THz regime in the agri-food sector Describes system components different forms of THz systems and the working principle of T waves for spectroscopic and imaging techniques Provides insights on future research needs for industrial implementation of THz technology Complements the knowledge of other existing non-destructive spectroscopy and imaging techniques for food analysis Although books on biomedical applications of THz have been published no book is available that deals with applications in the agri-food industry. Hence Terahertz Technology is beneficial for undergraduate and graduate students and those food industry professionals involved in research related to non-destructive quality assessment and imaging techniques. | Terahertz Technology Principles and Applications in the Agri-Food Industry

Precision Metal Additive Manufacturing

Precision Metal Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a fast-growing sector with the ability to evoke a revolution in manufacturing due to its almost unlimited design freedom and its capability to produce personalised parts locally and with efficient material use. AM companies however still face technological challenges such as limited precision due to shrinkage built-in stresses and limited process stability and robustness. Moreover often post-processing is needed due to high roughness and remaining porosity. Qualified trained personnel are also in short supply. In recent years there have been dramatic improvements in AM design methods process control post-processing material properties and material range. However if AM is going to gain a significant market share it must be developed into a true precision manufacturing method. The production of precision parts relies on three principles: Production is robust (i. e. all sensitive parameters can be controlled). Production is predictable (for example the shrinkage that occurs is acceptable because it can be predicted and compensated in the design). Parts are measurable (as without metrology accuracy repeatability and quality assurance cannot be known). AM of metals is inherently a high-energy process with many sensitive and inter-related process parameters making it susceptible to thermal distortions defects and process drift. The complete modelling of these processes is beyond current computational power and novel methods are needed to practicably predict performance and inform design. In addition metal AM produces highly textured surfaces and complex surface features that stretch the limits of contemporary metrology. With so many factors to consider there is a significant shortage of background material on how to inject precision into AM processes. Shortage in such material is an important barrier for a wider uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies and a comprehensive book is thus needed. This book aims to inform the reader how to improve the precision of metal AM processes by tackling the three principles of robustness predictability and metrology and by developing computer-aided engineering methods that empower rather than limit AM design. Richard Leach is a professor in metrology at the University of Nottingham and heads up the Manufacturing Metrology Team. Prior to this position he was at the National Physical Laboratory from 1990 to 2014. His primary love is instrument building from concept to final installation and his current interests are the dimensional measurement of precision and additive manufactured structures. His research themes include the measurement of surface topography the development of methods for measuring 3D structures the development of methods for controlling large surfaces to high resolution in industrial applications and the traceability of X-ray computed tomography. He is a leader of several professional societies and a visiting professor at Loughborough University and the Harbin Institute of Technology. Simone Carmignato is a professor in manufacturing engineering at the University of Padua. His main research activities are in the areas of precision manufacturing dimensional metrology and industrial computed tomography. He is the author of books and hundreds of scientific papers and he is an active member of leading technical and scientific societies. He has been chairman organiser and keynote speaker for several international conferences and received national and international awards including the Taylor Medal from CIRP the International Academy for Production Engineering. | Precision Metal Additive Manufacturing
