A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

Making use of the formerly secret archives of the Soviet government interviews and first-hand personal experiences Nathaniel Davis describes how the Russian Orthodox Church hung on the brink of institutional extinction twice in the past sixty-five years. In 1939 only a few score widely scattered priests were still functioning openly. Ironically Hitler's invasion and Stalin's reaction to it rescued the church - and parishes reopened new clergy and bishops were consecrated a patriarch was elected and seminaries and convents were reinstituted. However after Stalin's death Khrushchev resumed the onslaught against religion. Davis reveals that the erosion of church strength between 1948 and 1988 was greater than previously known and it was none too soon when the Soviet government changed policy in anticipation of the millennium of Russia's conversion to Christianity. More recently the collapse of communism has created a mixture of dizzying opportunity and daunting trouble for Russian Orthodoxy. The newly revised and updated edition addresses the tumultuous events of recent years including schisms in Ukraine Estonia and Moldova and confrontations between church traditionalists conservatives and reformers. The author also covers battles against Greek-Catholics Roman Catholics Protestant evangelists and pagans in the south and east the canonization of the last Czar the church's financial crisis and hard data on the slowing Russian orthodox recovery and growth. Institutional rebuilding and moral leadership now beckon between promise and possibility. | A Long Walk To Church A Contemporary History Of Russian Orthodoxy

The Game of Humor A Comprehensive Theory of Why We Laugh

The Game of Humor A Comprehensive Theory of Why We Laugh

Humor wit and laughter surround each person. From everyday quips to the carefully contrived comedy of literature newspapers and television we experience humor in many forms yet the impetus for our laughter is far from innocuous. Misfortune stupidity and moral or cultural defects however faintly revealed in others and ourselves seem to make us laugh. Although discomforting such negative terms as superiority aggression hostility ridicule or degradation can be applied to instances of humor. According to scholars Thomas Hobbes's superiority theory that humor arises from mischances infirmities and indecencies where there is no wit at all applies to most humor. With the exception of good-natured play Charles R. Gruner claims that humor is rarely as innocent as it first appears. Gruner's proposed superiority theory of humor is all-encompassing. In The Game of Humor he expands the scope of Hobbes's theory to include and explore the contest aspect of good-natured play. As such the author believes all instances of humor can be examined as games in terms of competition and keeping score winners and losers. Gruner draws on a broad spectrum of thought-provoking examples. Holocaust jokes sexual humor the racialist dialogue of such comic characters as Stepin Fetchit and Archie Bunker simple puns and many of the author's own encounters with everyday humor. Gruner challenges the reader to offer a single example of humor that cannot be de-humorized by its agonistic nature. The Game of Humor makes intriguing and enjoyable reading for people interested in humor and the aspects of human motivation. This book will also be valuable to professionals in communication and information studies sociologists literary critics and linguists and psychologists concerned with the conflicts and tensions of everyday life. | The Game of Humor A Comprehensive Theory of Why We Laugh

Studying Islam in the Arab World The Rupture Between Religion and the Social Sciences

Studying Islam in the Arab World The Rupture Between Religion and the Social Sciences

Addressing the rupture between religious and social sciences in Arab universities this book provides a critical assessment of the curricula of Shariah and Islamic Studies departments across the Arab World arguing for increased interdisciplinary dialogue. Based on over 250 interviews with university students and teachers this study is the sum of five years of field research observing the curricula and teaching styles of colleges in the Shariah sciences. The author provides critical insight into these curricula by focusing on case studies in Lebanon and Jordan Morocco Kuwait and Qatar and in Malaysia. In doing so the book aims to answer the following questions: What is the aim of religious education? Does it aim to create people who specialize solely in religious affairs or does it aim to form the student according to a comprehensive human framework? What is the nature of the relationship between the social sciences and the Shariah sciences? The book concludes by examining three pioneering institutions which have introduced alternative curricula in teaching Shariah studies. The book has wide geographic and ideological coverage and will appeal to university students academics and policy analysts working across a range of disciplines including the philosophy of knowledge Islamic law and education and sociology. | Studying Islam in the Arab World The Rupture Between Religion and the Social Sciences

Theory of Statistical Inference

Theory of Statistical Inference

Theory of Statistical Inference is designed as a reference on statistical inference for researchers and students at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level. It presents a unified treatment of the foundational ideas of modern statistical inference and would be suitable for a core course in a graduate program in statistics or biostatistics. The emphasis is on the application of mathematical theory to the problem of inference leading to an optimization theory allowing the choice of those statistical methods yielding the most efficient use of data. The book shows how a small number of key concepts such as sufficiency invariance stochastic ordering decision theory and vector space algebra play a recurring and unifying role. The volume can be divided into four sections. Part I provides a review of the required distribution theory. Part II introduces the problem of statistical inference. This includes the definitions of the exponential family invariant and Bayesian models. Basic concepts of estimation confidence intervals and hypothesis testing are introduced here. Part III constitutes the core of the volume presenting a formal theory of statistical inference. Beginning with decision theory this section then covers uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) estimation minimum risk equivariant (MRE) estimation and the Neyman-Pearson test. Finally Part IV introduces large sample theory. This section begins with stochastic limit theorems the δ-method the Bahadur representation theorem for sample quantiles large sample U-estimation the Cramér-Rao lower bound and asymptotic efficiency. A separate chapter is then devoted to estimating equation methods. The volume ends with a detailed development of large sample hypothesis testing based on the likelihood ratio test (LRT) Rao score test and the Wald test. Features This volume includes treatment of linear and nonlinear regression models ANOVA models generalized linear models (GLM) and generalized estimating equations (GEE). An introduction to decision theory (including risk admissibility classification Bayes and minimax decision rules) is presented. The importance of this sometimes overlooked topic to statistical methodology is emphasized. The volume emphasizes throughout the important role that can be played by group theory and invariance in statistical inference. Nonparametric (rank-based) methods are derived by the same principles used for parametric models and are therefore presented as solutions to well-defined mathematical problems rather than as robust heuristic alternatives to parametric methods. Each chapter ends with a set of theoretical and applied exercises integrated with the main text. Problems involving R programming are included. Appendices summarize the necessary background in analysis matrix algebra and group theory.
