The Internet of Materials

The Internet of Materials

State-of-the-art flat structures called metasurfaces can filter and steer light and sound render an object completely invisible to electromagnetic waves and much more. They can deliver automation remote operation and advanced performance to a wide variety of existing systems with applications in communications medical imaging sensing and security. However for non-specialists individual metasurfaces are currently restricted to limited reusability and accessibility. This book brings together various scientific disciplines with the aim of outlining a programmable ‘plug-and-play’ metasurface. The book focuses on a recently proposed platform – known as the HyperSurface – that provides many electromagnetic functions of metasurfaces in a single structure which can be controlled and reconfigured by software. This revolutionary approach paves the way for new opportunities in wireless communications and programmable wireless environments: HyperSurfaces could link networks with objects and physical environments and create smarter systems that are far more responsive to user demands. Walls that absorb radiation or block digital eavesdropping and wireless long-distance charging of devices are among the many possibilities. The book aspires to provide the foundational knowledge for creating an Internet of Materials enabling smart environments at any scale – from indoor wireless communications to medical imaging equipment. Although the set of disciplines involved covers a considerable span we hope that the material will benefit experts and students alike. | The Internet of Materials

Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

This book explores the emerging area of microtonality through an examination of the tuning theories of Erv Wilson. It is the first publication to offer a broad discussion of this influential theorist whose innovations have far-reaching ramifications for microtonal tuning systems. This study addresses the breadth and complexity of Wilson’s work by focusing on his microtonal keyboard designs as a means to investigate his tuning concepts and their practical applications. Narushima examines materials ranging from historical and experimental tunings to instrument design as well as musical applications of mathematical theories and multidimensional geometry. The volume provides an analysis of some of Wilson’s most significant theoretical ideas including the Scale Tree Moments of Symmetry Constant Structures and Combination-Product Sets. These theories offer ways to conceptualize musical scales as patterns with structural integrity and whose shapes can be altered to produce infinitely varying forms. The book shows how these structural properties can be used to map scales onto a microtonal keyboard by providing step-by-step guidelines and clearly illustrated examples. Most importantly it brings together theoretical and practical methods of tuning to enable composers performers and instrument designers to explore previously uncharted areas of microtonality making a significant contribution to the fields of music theory composition and music technology. | Microtonality and the Tuning Systems of Erv Wilson

Technological Substitution in Asia

Technological Substitution in Asia

Over last few decades the world has witnessed the process of rapid diffusion of new information and communication technologies (ICT) that enforced remarkable changes and structural shifts going far beyond economic sphere of life. ICT become fast available widespread and rapidly growing access to and use of ICT additionally enhances the process of technological substitution which consists in switching from the ‘old’ to ‘new’ technological solutions. The on-going digital revolution undeniably pervasively impacts and reshapes societies and economies hence deserves special attention and interest. This book provides extensive evidence on information and communication technologies development diffusion patterns unveils specific ‘network effects’ that enhance rapid spread of ICT and detect major macroeconomic determinants of this process across 36 Asian economies over the period 1980-2015. Moreover this research traces country-specific patterns of the unique process. We consider two types of technological substitution namely: ‘fixed-to-mobile’ type technological substitution process encompasses switching from fixed telephony (‘old technology’) to mobile telephony (‘new technology’); while the ‘fixed-to-wireless’ type technological substitution – switching from fixed (narrowband and/or broadband) fixed Internet networks (‘old technologies’) to wireless (mainly broadband) Internet networks (‘new technologies’). Moreover this study empirically identifies the potential effect of selected macroeconomic factors which may potentially enhance dynamic spread of ICT. | Technological Substitution in Asia

Johann Mattheson’s Pièces de clavecin and Das neu-eröffnete Orchestre Mattheson’s Universal Style in Theory and Practice

Johann Mattheson’s Pièces de clavecin and Das neu-eröffnete Orchestre Mattheson’s Universal Style in Theory and Practice

A prolific music theorist and critic as well as an established composer Johannes Mattheson remains surprisingly understudied. In this important study Margaret Seares places Mattheson’s Pièces de clavecin (1714) in the context of his work as a public intellectual who encouraged German musicians and their musical public to eschew what he saw as the hidebound traditions of the past and instead embrace a universalism of style and expression derived from contemporary currents in music of the leading European nations. Beginning with the early non-musical writings by Mattheson Seares places them in the context of the cosmopolitan city-state of Hamburg before moving to a detailed study of his first major musical treatise Das neu-er¶ffnete Orchestre of 1713 in which he espoused his views about the musics of the past and present and in particular the characteristics of the musics of Germany Italy France and England. This latter section of the treatise Part III is edited and translated into English in the book's appendix - the first such translation available. Seares then moves on to an evaluation of the Pièces de clavecin as a work in which Mattheson reflects in musical terms the themes of modernism (in the sense of la mode) and universalism that are such a strong part of his writings of the period and a work that represents an important precursor for the keyboard suites of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Frideric Handel. | Johann Mattheson’s Pièces de clavecin and Das neu-eröffnete Orchestre Mattheson’s Universal Style in Theory and Practice

Ransomware and Cybercrime

Ransomware and Cybercrime

In May 2021 Jim Gosler known as the Godfather and commander of US agencies’ cyber offensive capability said ''Either the Intelligence Community (IC) would grow and adapt or the Internet would eat us alive. '' Mr Gosler was speaking at his retirement only several months before the terrorist attacks of 9/11. He possibly did not realise the catalyst or the tsunami that he and his tens of thousands of US IC offensive website operatives had created and commenced. Over the last two decades what Mr Gosler and his army of Internet keyboard warriors created would become the modus operandi for every faceless nameless state-sponsored or individual cybercriminal to replicate against an unwary ill-protected and ignorant group of executives and security professionals who knew little to nothing about the clandestine methods of infiltration and weaponisation of the Internet that the US and UK agencies led all in the name of security. This book covers many cyber and ransomware attacks and events including how we have gotten to the point of massive digital utilisation particularly during the global lockdown and COVID-19 pandemic to online spending that will see twice the monetary amount lost to cybercrime than what is spent online. There is little to no attribution and with the IC themselves suffering cyberattacks they are all blamed on being sophisticated ones of course. We are witnessing the undermining of our entire way of life our economies and even our liberties. The IC has lots to answer for and unequivocally created the disastrous situation we are currently in. They currently have little to no answer. We need—no we must demand—change. That change must start by ensuring the Internet and all connections to it are secure and no longer allow easy access and exfiltration for both the ICs and cybercriminals. | Ransomware and Cybercrime

Modulation Theory

Modulation Theory

In recent years a considerable amount of effort has been devoted both in industry and academia towards the design performance analysis and evaluation of modulation schemes to be used in wireless and optical networks towards the development of the next and future generations of mobile cellular communication systems. Modulation Theory is intended to serve as a complementary textbook for courses dealing with Modulation Theory or Communication Systems but also as a professional book for engineers who need to update their knowledge in the communications area. The modulation aspects presented in the book use modern concepts of stochastic processes such as autocorrelation and power spectrum density which are novel for undergraduate texts or professional books and provides a general approach for the theory with real life results applied to professional design. This text is suitable for the undergraduate as well as the initial graduate levels of Electrical Engineering courses and is useful for the professional who wants to review or get acquainted with the a modern exposition of the modulation theory. The books covers signal representations for most known waveforms Fourier analysis and presents an introduction to Fourier transform and signal spectrum including the concepts of convolution autocorrelation and power spectral density for deterministic signals. It introduces the concepts of probability random variables and stochastic processes including autocorrelation cross-correlation power spectral and cross-spectral densities for random signals and their applications to the analysis of linear systems. This chapter also includes the response of specific non-linear systems such as power amplifiers. The book presents amplitude modulation with random signals including analog and digital signals and discusses performance evaluation methods presents quadrature amplitude modulation using random signals. Several modulation schemes are discussed including SSB QAM ISB C-QUAM QPSK and MSK. Their autocorrelation and power spectrum densities are computed. A thorough discussion on angle modulation with random modulating signals along with frequency and phase modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing is provided. Their power spectrum densities are computed using the Wiener-Khintchin theorem.
