Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Within linguistics there has been a great deal of interest in discourse particles for some time now especially within semantics and pragmatics. The term ‘discourse particles’ has been used to cover a broad range of phenomena including such things as ‘sentence final particles ’ ‘discourse adverbs’ and other related phenomena. However most research in the area (particularly within formal semantics and pragmatics) focuses on a restricted set of languages and there is little consensus on the proper formal treatment of particles partly due to the limited range of data available. In recent years there has been extensive development of the formal approach to discourse particles which often treats these words as devices for marking information update. Also important is the extension of data to non-Western languages like Japanese Korean or Chinese. These volumes are the first to give an exclusive focus on particles in non-European languages (in this case Asian languages) from the perspective of formal as well as non-formal semantics and pragmatics. These volumes include papers on Japanese Mandarin Tagalog Kimaragang Dusun Malay Singlish Thai and Vietnamese. The papers are informed by recent theoretical work in formal semantics and pragmatics relating to the meaning of particles. The collection contributes to our theoretical understanding of the meaning of discourse particles and to empirical knowledge of discourse particles in the languages of Asia. | Discourse Particles in Asian Languages

Practical Rock Mechanics

Practical Rock Mechanics

An Ideal Source for Geologists and Others with Little Background in Engineering or Mechanics Practical Rock Mechanics provides an introduction for graduate students as well as a reference guide for practicing engineering geologists and geotechnical engineers. The book considers fundamental geological processes that give rise to the nature of rock masses and control their mechanical behavior. Stresses in the earth‘s crust are discussed and methods of measurement and prediction explained. Ways to investigate describe test and characterize rocks in the laboratory and at project scale are reviewed. The application of rock mechanics principles to the design of engineering structures including tunnels foundations and slopes is addressed. The book is illustrated throughout with simple figures and photographs and important concepts are illustrated by modern case examples. Mathematical equations are kept to the minimum necessary and are explained fully the book leans towards practice rather than theory. This text: Addresses the principles of rock mechanics as it applies to both structural geology and engineering practice Demonstrates the importance of and methods of geological characterisation to rock engineering Examines the standard methods of rock mechanics testing and measurement as well as interpretation of data in practice Explains connections between main parameters both empirically as well as on the basis of scientific theory Provides examples of the practice of rock mechanics to major engineering projects Practical Rock Mechanics teaches from first principles and aids readers understanding of the concepts of stress and stress transformation and the practical application of rock mechanics theory. This text can help ensure that ground models and designs are correct

Lean Sustainability Creating Safe Enduring and Profitable Operations

Lean Sustainability Creating Safe Enduring and Profitable Operations

The Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance defines safety as the maintenance of peace of mind. Without peace of mind or the serenity brought about by a safe working environment employees will be unwilling and even unable to focus their energies on production improvement. Thus it can be said that all improvement begins with safety. Winner of a 2013 Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award! A how-to manual on the proper integration of safety and environmental sustainability with Lean implementations Lean Sustainability: Creating Safe Enduring and Profitable Operations provides a proven recipe for achieving safety and sustainability excellence. This book is the result of the author‘s two decades of experience implementing Lean; Safety Health and Environmental (SHE); and sustainability processes in the chemical food and consumer products industries. It unveils valuable lessons learned and little-known tips for eliminating waste and increasing process efficiency while reducing safety incidents and the overall impact on the environment. The text illustrates how to use the SHE Pillar as a gateway to continuous improvement regardless of the improvement methodology you use. Bolstered with proven methodologies and real-world advice it introduces novel approaches for achieving safety and sustainability excellence including: Autonomous Safety‘supplying employees with the knowledge skills and motivation to work safely Triple Zero the achievement of zero accidents zero environmental incidents and zero losses Green Value Stream Mapping the application of Value Stream Mapping to environmental and sustainability issues Although there are many books on Lean sustainability and SHE few explain how to integrate these dynamic tools. Walking you through this process this book supplies the tools to create a synergy that wil | Lean Sustainability Creating Safe Enduring and Profitable Operations

The Insider's Guide to Independent Film Distribution

The Insider's Guide to Independent Film Distribution

Innovation in technology means that almost anyone can make an independent film these days. Although this may be good news for aspiring filmmakers it also means that the oversupply of independent films on the market has caused acquisition prices to dramatically decrease. As a result producers and investors rarely recover their initial investment in the films they make. But don't be discouraged! Use this book to learn the realities of the market in advance and map out a winning distribution plan. This comprehensive manual for filmmakers and producers dedicated to film distribution and the marketplace could mean the difference between getting your film out to the public and keeping it in the can. Learn how to sell your movie to a studio a cable network a video distributor or an international buyer. Self-distribution and other alternatives to traditional distribution are also considered. In addition you'll hear some success stories from producers and hear exactly what buyers are seeking. Stacey Parks has worked with hundreds of hungry filmmakers to get their films a distribution deal and knows how frustrating the whole process can be. Let her show you how you can take control of your filmmaking career and start getting your work seen by audiences with a few little-known distribution secrets. Features include: . Interviews and case studies with producers and distributors. Ten ways to market your film for self-distribution. Sales projections per territory. Distribution resources listings. Negotiation tips for distribution agreements. Sample distribution agreements. What you must know to get your independent film distributed. Written by a distributor who knows the process inside and out. Interviews with buyers and acquisitions executives from every sector of the business on what kinds of films they look for what they're sick of seeing and how their acquisitions processes work. Human Factors in Lighting

Human Factors in Lighting

The availability of electric lighting has changed the lives of people the world over yet as a major user of electricity it has come under increasing scrutiny in recent years. This scrutiny has focused largely on the environmental consequences with little consideration of the benefits of lighting. Human Factors in Lighting Third Edition restores some balance to the discussion by examining the ways in which people interact with lighting. These interactions influence the ability to perform visual tasks; the perception of people objects and spaces; human comfort and behavior; as well as human health and safety. It is only by understanding how to use light to achieve these ends that lighting can be provided effectively and efficiently to the benefit of all. See What‘s New in the Third Edition: New chapters on the non-image-forming system lighting for pedestrians light pollution and lighting and electricity use Revision of all other chapters to update them to take into account the advances that have been made in our understanding of the effects of light on people over the last decade Integration of the combined effects of light via the visual and non-image-forming systems on performance and perception The book covers both the visual and the non-visual effects of light on people as well as the benefits of lighting and the costs it imposes on the environment. It details the consequences of exposure to lighting or lighting technology and the role of exposure to light on such basic functions of the body as circadian rhythms. The author combines information from many different sources and integrates them into a coherent overview of lighting practice that can be used to develop better lighting solutions at a lower environmental cost.
