English Novel Vol II The Smollett to Austen

English Novel Vol II The Smollett to Austen

The English Novel Volume II: Smollett to Austen collects a series of previously-published essays on the early eighteenth-century novel in a single volume reflecting the proliferation of theoretical approaches since the 1970s. The novel has been the object of some of the most exciting and important critical speculations and the eighteenth-century novel has been at the centre of new approaches both to the novel and to the period between 1750 and 1800. Richard Kroll's introduction seeks to frame the contributions by reference to the most significant critical discussions. These include: the general importance of 'sentimentalism' as a cultural movement after 1750; its relationship to the emergence of the Gothic novel as a specific genre or mode; the rapid rise in the number of women novelists in the later eighteenth century; the relationship between the novel as mediator of social relations and the idea of the 'public sphere'; the relationship between novelistic codes and the massive growth of a consumerist society; the class conflicts of writers like Smollett; the effect on the novel of the new 'British' nation; and the effects of the French Revolution and the subsequent political debates on writers like Wollstonecraft Godwin and Austen. This collection will be of interest to students of the later enlightenment and also to all who are interested in late eighteenth-century radicalism and the general relationship between literature history and politics. | English Novel Vol II The Smollett to Austen

Beyond First Order Model Theory Volume I and II

Beyond First Order Model Theory Volume I and II

Model theory is the meta-mathematical study of the concept of mathematical truth. After Afred Tarski coined the term Theory of Models in the early 1950’s it rapidly became one of the central most active branches of mathematical logic. In the last few decades ideas that originated within model theory have provided powerful tools to solve problems in a variety of areas of classical mathematics including algebra combinatorics geometry number theory and Banach space theory and operator theory. The two volumes of Beyond First Order Model Theory present the reader with a fairly comprehensive vista rich in width and depth of some of the most active areas of contemporary research in model theory beyond the realm of the classical first-order viewpoint. Each chapter is intended to serve both as an introduction to a current direction in model theory and as a presentation of results that are not available elsewhere. All the articles are written so that they can be studied independently of one another. The first volume is an introduction to current trends in model theory and contains a collection of articles authored by top researchers in the field. It is intended as a reference for students as well as senior researchers. This second volume contains introductions to real-valued logic and applications abstract elementary classes and applications interconnections between model theory and function spaces nonstucture theory and model theory of second-order logic. Features A coherent introduction to current trends in model theory. Contains articles by some of the most influential logicians of the last hundred years. No other publication brings these distinguished authors together. Suitable as a reference for advanced undergraduate postgraduates and researchers. Material presented in the book (e. g abstract elementary classes first-order logics with dependent sorts and applications of infinitary logics in set theory) is not easily accessible in the current literature. The various chapters in the book can be studied independently. | Beyond First Order Model Theory Volume I and II

Resale Price Maintenance and the Law The Future of Vertical Restraints

The question of how to properly enforce against RPM has been a contentious debate for decades on both sides of the Atlantic. The catalyst is the acceptance that RPM can generate both anti-competitive effects and pro-competitive efficiencies that need to be properly balanced to ensure against Type I/Type II errors and to create viable legislation. Part I focuses on 100 years of US origins and the current legal approach to VR enforcement which reveals the precedent responsible for the transition between per se illegality and the rule of reason thresholds at the federal level. Nine anti-competitive and 19 pro-competitive theoretical models are also introduced to clearly demonstrate the true nonconsensus existent between economists as to whether RPM is deleterious enough to justify a stringent approach to RPM regulation. Part II closely examines the EU origins and current legal structure where RPM has maintained its hardcore by-object designation pursuant to Art. 101(1) TFEU with the consequence of having no safe harbours no applicability of the De Minimus Doctrine an onerous negative rebuttable presumption non-severability of the agreement and almost no chance of obtaining an exemption under Art. 101(3). This is exacerbated by the EC’s lack of guidance on how to prove all conditions necessary for an Art. 101(3) exemption and when a vertical arrangement actually escapes Art. 101(1) applicability. The aim of this book is to examine the economic models historical origins and legal structures of the US/EU regimes to develop proposals on how to modify the EU’s current legal structure to ensure proper enforcement of RPM behaviour that actually enhances legal certainty through a more aligned approach at the national level. Part III proposes five solutions which scrutinise the concepts of appreciability hardcore and by-object restraints to implement modifications to EU’s current legal framework to ensure RPM receives reasonable and equitable treatment in line with economic theory. | Resale Price Maintenance and the Law The Future of Vertical Restraints

Innovative Approaches in Diagnosis and Management of Crop Diseases 3-volume set

This new 3-volume set Innovative Approaches in Diagnosis and Management of Crop Diseases provides an abundance of new research and information on major diseases of various crops along with new techniques and technology for the detection of plant pathogens along with appropriate management strategies. Divided into three volumes and with chapters written by renowned and expert scientists working in different areas of plant pathology the volumes cover important diseases of crops incited by bacteria fungi viruses viroids phytoplasma and nematodes. They address these disease challenges to commercial field and horticultural crops and their management. Volume 1 focuses on the Mollicute class of bacteria. It looks at the detection diagnosis and management of phytoplasma diseases and viroids CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in plants for virus resistance next-generation sequencing technologies and more. Volume 2 focuses on recent advances in diagnosis detection and management of diseases of specific crops such as cotton sesame rice wheat millet maize field pea and pigeonpea ginger and turmeric guava aonla and vegetable cruciferous crops. Volume 3: Nanomolecules and Biocontrol Agents explores the use of novel new ways to prevent and mitigate plant diseases. These include novel green nanotechnologies; biosensors; biological management using phyllosphere- rhizosphere- and endosphere-derived biocontrol agents; employing biofumigation techniques; and plant immunization approaches. The book also considers the special challenge of plant disease management under the present climate change scenario. Key features: Presents diverse research of leading plant pathologists on detection diagnosis and management of crop diseases Shares innovative and emerging techniques for diagnosis and management of major plant diseases Covers a vast array of important crops and their diseases Diagnosis and management of biotic stresses play a pivotal role in efficient agriculture production and together these volumes of Innovative Approaches in Diagnosis and Management of Crop Diseases provide reviews of crucial research to effectively advance the detection diagnosis and management of crop diseases. | Innovative Approaches in Diagnosis and Management of Crop Diseases 3-volume set
