How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

Searching for a needle in a haystack is an important task in several contexts of data analysis and decision-making. Examples include identifying the insider threat within an organization the prediction of failure in industrial production or pinpointing the unique signature of a solo perpetrator such as a school shooter or a lone wolf terrorist. It is a challenge different from that of identifying a rare event (e. g. a tsunami) or detecting anomalies because the needle is not easily distinguished from the haystack. This challenging context is imbued with particular difficulties from the lack of sufficient data to train a machine learning model through the identification of the relevant features and up to the painful price of false alarms which might cause us to question the relevance of machine learning solutions even if they perform well according to common performance criteria. In this book Prof. Neuman approaches the problem of finding the needle by specifically focusing on the human factor from solo perpetrators to insider threats. Providing for the first time a deep critical multidimensional and methodological analysis of the challenge the book offers data scientists and decision makers a deep scientific foundational approach combined with a pragmatic practical approach that may guide them in searching for a needle in a haystack. | How to Find a Needle in a Haystack From the Insider Threat to Solo Perpetrators

Towards Good Lighting for the Stage Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design

Towards Good Lighting for the Stage: Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design explores the theoretical underpinnings of effective lighting design from conceptualization to live performance. Through an investigation of the author’s own aesthetic point of view—grounded in a broad investigation of art and design that blends pop culture and fine art theory and practice—this book documents the author’s thinking on the design process to fill the unexplored gap between an aesthetic philosophy and its expression in composition. Redefinitions of the artist artwork and spectator link beauty and artistic efficacy to arrive at a set of principles for assessment that demand that contemporary lighting design surpass utilitarian visibility to become a vital part of the total artwork that is a theatrical production. Inspired by the movements of the broader art and design worlds of the mid-19th century through present day—citing influences as diverse as Jennifer Tipton Lois Tyson Dieter Rams and Dave Hickey—this book charts a course from the artistic team’s dramaturgical work to a solo studio concept to the tech table. Engaging and wide-ranging Towards Good Lighting for the Stage synthesizes years of cross-disciplinary research and case studies of the author’s own work into provocative reading for practitioners of lighting design advanced students and academics as well as those interested in connecting theatrical practice aesthetic theory and visual art. | Towards Good Lighting for the Stage Aesthetic Theory for Theatrical Lighting Design

The violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) is considered among the most influential performers in history and still maintains a strong following among violinists around the world. Dario Sarlo contributes significantly to the growing field of analytical research into recordings and the history of performance style. Focussing on Heifetz and his under-acknowledged but extensive performing relationship with the Bach solo violin works (BWV 1001-1006) Sarlo examines one of the most successful performing musicians of the twentieth century along with some of the most frequently performed works of the violin literature. Relational Leadership Theory Practice and Development

Relational Leadership Theory Practice and Development

The traditional idea of leadership as being about the solo heroic leader has now run its course. A new way of thinking about leadership is now needed to address major challenges such as achieving greater social responsibility enhancing leadership capacity and recognising the importance of context as affecting how leadership occurs. Relational leadership offers a new perspective of leadership that addresses these challenges. At its core relational leadership recognises leadership as centred in the relationships that form between both formal and informal leaders and those that follow them far more so than the personality or behaviours of individual leaders. This book introduces readers to the most up-to-date research in this area and the differing theoretical perspectives that can help us better understand leadership as a relational phenomenon. Important characteristics of effective leadership relationships such as trust respect and mutuality are discussed focusing on how they develop and how they bring about leadership effects. Specific forms of relational leadership such as shared leadership responsible leadership global team leadership and complexity leadership are addressed in subsequent chapters. The book is the first to examine recent ideas about how these new forms of relational leadership are put into practice as well as techniques tools and strategies available to organisations to help do so. The inclusion of three detailed case studies is specifically designed to help readers understand many of the key concepts covered in the book with key learning points emphasised. The book offers an excellent summary of the state-of-the-art topics in this new and exciting field of relational leadership. | Relational Leadership Theory Practice and Development

Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs

Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs

After Robert Armin joined the Chamberlain's Men singing in Shakespeare's dramas catapulted from 1. 25 songs and 9. 95 lines of singing per play to 3. 44 songs and 29. 75 lines of singing a virtually unnoticed phenomenon. In addition many of the songs became seemingly improvisatory—similar to Armin's personal style as an author and solo comedian. In order to study Armin's collaborative impact this interdisciplinary book investigates the songs that have Renaissance music that could have been heard on Shakespeare's stage. They occur in some of Shakespeare's most famous plays including Much Ado About Nothing Twelfth Night Hamlet and The Tempest. In fact Shakespeare's plays as we have them are not complete. They are missing the music that could have accompanied the plays’ songs. Significantly Renaissance vocal music far beyond just providing entertainment was believed to alter the bodies and souls of both performers and auditors to agree with its characteristics directly inciting passions from love to melancholy. By collaborating with early modern music editor and performing artist Lawrence Lipnik Catherine Henze is able to provide new performance editions of seventeen songs including spoken interruptions and cuts and rearrangement of the music to accommodate the dramatist's words. Next Henze analyzes the complete songs words and music according to Renaissance literary and music primary sources and applies the new information to interpretations of characters and scenes frequently challenging commonly held literary assessments. The book is organized according to Armin's involvement with the plays before during and after the comic actor joined Shakespeare's company. It offers readers the tools to interpret not only these songs but also vocal music in dramas by other Renaissance playwrights. Moreover Robert Armin and Shakespeare's Performed Songs written with non-specialized terminology provides a
