Integrated Water Resources Management Institutions and Livelihoods under Stress Bottom-up Perspectives from Zimbabwe; UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis

Integrated Water Resources Management Institutions and Livelihoods under Stress Bottom-up Perspectives from Zimbabwe; UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis

The majority of people in Limpopo river basin depend on rainfed agriculture. Unfortunately the Limpopo is water scarce and parts of the basin such as Zimbabwe's Mzingwane catchment are under stress in terms of agro-ecological and socio-politicoeconomic conditions. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has been adopted in the river basin in an attempt to improve water resources management. However it is not known whether or how IWRM has improved practices in water resources management and contributed towards improved livelihoods. This study used a bottom-up approach to analyse water management practices and livelihoods in the river basin. The objective of the study was to understand practices in water resources management at the local level and what drives those practices. Specifically the study analysed: practices in access to water for domestic and productive uses efforts at sustaining livelihoods and the environment water management for agriculture contestations over urban water services and river basin planning. The study showed the importance of context as a driver of practices in water resources management. The demonstrated influence of local level drivers on water resources management and livelihoods suggest that the challenges in water resources management cannot be solved outside of the wider socio-politico-economic realm. | Integrated Water Resources Management Institutions and Livelihoods under Stress Bottom-up Perspectives from Zimbabwe; UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis

Soil and Drought Basic Processes

Soil and Drought Basic Processes

Drought a serious global issue is being aggravated by climate change. Both pedological and agronomic droughts are major risk factors with adverse effects on agronomic productivity food and nutritional security and human wellbeing. This volume in the Advances in Soil Sciences series provides research information regarding case studies from diverse agro-ecoregions around the world and lists examples of effective management of drought at farm state national regional and global scales. Features: Considers processes factors and causes of pedological/agronomic droughts. Discusses effects of global warming on soil drought and describes management options to enhance drought resilience of agricultural soils. Focuses on specific case studies along with review of a variety of tools and techniques designed to mitigate drought and reduce its impact on agronomic productivity. Includes information on soil health and its effects on drought. In addition to highlighting the scientific accomplishments of Dr. Bobby A. Stewart this book is a major contribution to the global issue of drought management and its dynamics in relation to soil properties under changing climate. It is reference material for researchers students practitioners and policymakers in soil science agronomy ecology and management of natural resources with specific focus on adaptation and mitigation of climate change restoration of soil health strengthening of biodiversity and promoting the strategy for advancing the “Sustainable Development Goals” or Agenda 2030 of the United Nations. | Soil and Drought Basic Processes

The Sociology of Food and Agriculture

The Sociology of Food and Agriculture

Thoroughly revised and updated the third edition of The Sociology of Food and Agriculture provides a cutting-edge comprehensive introduction to the study of food and society. The book begins by examining the food economy with chapters focusing on foodscapes the financialization of food and a new chapter dedicated to food and nutrition (in)security. In Part II the book addresses community and culture. While some books only look at the interrelationships between food and culture this section problematizes the food system from the standpoint of marginalized bodies. It contains chapters focusing on agricultural and food labor and the peasantries topics which are often overlooked and gender ethnicity and poverty. Part III examines food and the environment with chapters addressing important topics such as agro-ecosystems food justice sustainable food and agriculture and food sovereignty. The final part focuses on food futures and includes a brand-new chapter on sustainable diets and ethical consumption. The book concludes by showcasing how we can rethink food production and consumption in a way that can help heal social political and cultural divisions. All chapters draw on international case studies and include learning objectives suggested discussion questions and recommendations for further reading to aid student learning. Resource Recovery from Waste Business Models for Energy Nutrient and Water Reuse in Low- and Middle-income Countries

Resource Recovery from Waste Business Models for Energy Nutrient and Water Reuse in Low- and Middle-income Countries

Humans generate millions of tons of waste every day. This waste is rich in water nutrients energy and organic compounds. Yet waste is not being managed in a way that permits us to derive value from its reuse whilst millions of farmers struggle with depleted soils and lack of water. This book shows how Resource Recovery and Reuse (RRR) could create livelihoods enhance food security support green economies reduce waste and contribute to cost recovery in the sanitation chain. While many RRR projects fully depend on subsidies and hardly survive their pilot phase hopeful signs of viable approaches to RRR are emerging around the globe including low- and middle-income countries. These enterprises or projects are tapping into entrepreneurial initiatives and public ̶ private partnerships leveraging private capital to help realize commercial or social value shifting the focus from treatment for waste disposal to treatment of waste as a valuable resource for safe reuse. The book provides a compendium of business options for energy nutrients and water recovery via 24 innovative business models based on an in-depth analysis of over 60 empirical cases of which 47 from around the world are described and evaluated in a systematic way. The focus is on organic municipal agro-industrial and food waste including fecal sludge supporting a diverse range of business models with potential for large-scale out-and up-scaling. | Resource Recovery from Waste Business Models for Energy Nutrient and Water Reuse in Low- and Middle-income Countries

Environmental Defenders Deadly Struggles for Life and Territory

Environmental Defenders Deadly Struggles for Life and Territory

This book is about environmental defenders and the violence they face while seeking to protect their land and the environment. Between 2002 and 2019 at least two thousand people were killed in 57 countries for defending their lands and the environment. Recent policy initiatives and media coverage have provided much needed attention to the protection and support of defenders but there has so far been little scholarly work. This edited volume explains who these defenders are what threats they face and what can be done to help support and protect them. Delving deep into the complex relations between and within communities corporations and government authorities the book highlights the diversity of defenders the collective character of their struggles the many drivers and forms of violence they are facing as well as the importance of emotions and gendered dimensions in protests and repression. Drawing on global case studies it examines the violence taking place around different types of development projects including fossil fuels agro-industrial renewable energy and infrastructure. The volume also examines the violence surrounding conservation projects including through militarized wildlife protection and surveillance technologies. The book concludes with a reflection on the perspectives of defenders about the best ways to support and protect them. It contrasts these with the lagging efforts of an international community often promoting economic growth over the lives of defenders. This volume is essential reading for all interested in understanding the challenges faced by environmental defenders and how to help and support them. It will also appeal to students scholars and practitioners involved in environmental protection environmental activism human rights social movements and development studies. | Environmental Defenders Deadly Struggles for Life and Territory
